It’s because of all of the gorgeous books in this world, and how we don’t have all of the time in the world to read them. So we must choose wisely. I’ve had a lifelong love affair with board books, and I’ve always especially loved that the best ones are really for people of all ages. I remember being pregnant with Scarlet and Des and crying in bookstore aisles because of all the beautiful books we’d soon share together. And we did then, and we do now. Magnificent.
A big and wonderful aspect of You Are Light, by Aaron Becker, is the visual aspect of it. It’s gorgeous from the outside, and the inside is full of surprises as well. When you open it, you find a bright sun surrounded by a halo of other circles. When you hold the book up to the light, it changes. And when you flip through the book, it changes as well. It’s because light is gorgeous and a part of all of us, and this interactive book is a wonderful tribute to that. We are light!
And we change, depending on how you look at us.
You Are Light Book Review:
As you know, I’m hugely fascinated with light, because it’s everything to me in my photography career. I’ve had to learn that in any situation, you work with the light given to figure out how long the camera shutter should be open, how wide, and how sensitive to light. The light reflects off the earth onto us, makes rain from the sea, feeds all living and growing things, and has helped create all of us. This book tell that simple concept that we ARE light in the most graceful and beautiful way. The book is designed for ages 3-8, but I’m certain it appeals to all of us!
My first Aaron Becker book was A Stone for Sascha which came out in 2018. That made me go back into my kids’ bookshelves and look through the Journey trilogy. Aaron Becker can say so much without words, or without a lot of words. I admire that because I struggle with words.
And then I launch into 3,000 word stories when some stories don’t need all the words.
I have to mention that Aaron Becker is a Caldecott Honor-winning author-illustrator and that he lives in western MA, which is where I live! And I spend so many hours and days here chasing the light, so it’s only fitting to read this wonderful book. It feels like it just fits perfectly.
I must have traced the colorful circles with my hands a dozen times, but both of my kids also marveled at the colored layers and how they changed with each page. Des is just starting to understand the deeper meanings of many books – it’s like this book starts the wonder with powerful board books and what they might mean. It’s the most unique book you’ll find for children, and a wonderful gift idea for kids (and their adults) of all ages.
Lastly, there are a few things I love most about this book, other than its unique and beautiful design. It’s that I think it will mean different things to different people, and also different things to kids throughout different phases and stages of their lives. Wonderful to read outside and near a window. We opened it on a cold and rainy day and loved talking about the sun warming the earth, and all of us being a part of something poignant. It’s a book I would have wanted as a child, and you can bet I’ll be gifting it to new parents! It’s perfect for baby showers.
