Traveling can be super boring, especially if you’re a frequent traveler or nomadic worker, but that doesn’t need to be the case. It can take time to find an activity that brings you joy, but traveling becomes much more bearable once you do find it.

In this article, we’ll be sharing nine ways for you to entertain yourself when traveling. Whether you want to play games during a flight or prefer something less engaging, there’ll be something here for you.

1. Read a book

Not only is reading one of the most common ways for people to pass the time, but it’s also an opportunity for you to learn something new and become a more educated person. It’s a great way for you to escape from the moment and fully immerse yourself within another world, even if it’s just for a couple of hours.

There’s something for everyone when it comes to reading, regardless of your taste and preference. If you want something relatively lighthearted and easy to get into, a simple romance might be for you; other readers may prefer something more immersive, such as a fantasy or historical book that takes you somewhere new.

2. Listen to podcasts

Everybody seems to be listening to podcasts nowadays, and for good reason. They can be an excellent way to switch off and let yourself almost be a part of the conversation, plus some of the topics being discussed can be really quite interesting. The best part is that new episodes are often released weekly, meaning there is almost always new content.

If you don’t really fancy listening to a podcast or reading a book, watching a movie or TV show is a good way to pass the time when you’re on the move. Many streaming apps also allow you to download a number of different items, meaning you can save your data and enjoy content no matter where you are.

4. Place some bets

Betting is a pastime enjoyed by many, and with the relatively recent advent of mobile betting, it’s never been easier for you to place a bet and follow the result of it in real time. There are many betting apps out there, though some are better than others, and depending on what you want to bet on, you’ll have plenty of choices.

If you’re traveling on vacation, a good way to get a bit more spending money in your pocket can come thanks to gambling, though a positive return isn’t guaranteed. As always, only bet with money you’re okay with losing, but aside from that, it can be fun and a great way to pass the time.

5. Play mobile games

Gaming is easier to do than ever before, and the fact that we now have mobile phones that can handle many different games is a testament to how far we’ve come recently. Our mobile phones are now so powerful that they can play large-scale PvP games with just a stable internet connection and a compatible device.

While there are many, many games out there for you to decide to play, we’d recommend a game that you can get easily lost in. These games, such as Words With Friends or Clash of Clans, might not be the most action-packed, but they’re perfect for you to plan when you need to pass an hour or two.

6. Learn a new language

Being able to speak a new language is one of the most valuable skills you can have, and learning a new one can be the perfect activity for you to do when you’re traveling on a vacation getaway. Having the ability to chat with the locals will help make your trip much more enjoyable, no matter where you are going.

There are many different ways to learn languages, though doing it with the help of an app is one of the more effective ways, and we’d recommend this course of action. Duolingo is the go-to app for any language enthusiast, and with the premium option being reasonably cheap, it’s a no-brainer if you’re traveling.

7. Write something

Most people think they can’t write, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. As long as you have a decent vocabulary and an interest in helping to shape a story, you have the potential to write great copy, and it’s an activity that can be really beneficial if you’re looking to pass some time.

You can also monetize this skill and earn a good amount from being able to write good copy. Whether you want to go down the author route and write a book or fancy becoming a freelance writer, the ability to use words to make money is something we think is definitely worth thinking about.

8. Take photographs

Photography is not as exclusive as it once was, with almost everyone having access to a smartphone that can take good photos. The real skill there is to ensure that your pictures stand out from everyone else’s, and there are many different guides and photo editing apps that can help you do this.

9. Talk to people

Having a chat with people on your journey is an activity that is often forgotten by many, and this is a huge shame. Some of the wisest advice you can learn will not come from books or the internet but from the people we meet. Next time you’re on the train, have a conversation with the person next to you and show a genuine interest in what they say.
