Things That Every New Dog Owner Should Know
If you are thinking of getting a pet dog, then it is a great idea, as they can be such a great addition to the home. Having a home with a dog that loves you unconditionally is one of the best feelings. There are a few caveats, though, that you need to think about to have a balanced view about things. If you are new to dogs, then knowing things that they should or shouldn’t be having is a great idea, as well as the places that they should or shouldn’t go to. Even a few things that they should or shouldn’t be doing. But that is pretty much it – yay for having a pet dog.
In all seriousness, though, your dog will love to be around you and will probably spend quite a lot of the time being where you are, or being in the kitchen and living room with you. So here are some of the things that you need to think about, so you’ll be good to go and able to care for your dog in the best way.
Things That Every New Dog Owner Should Know
New trash cans
You will need to make sure as a new dog parent that you are keeping your trash well-covered and really secure. Dogs can’t have quite a few things that we throw away, and if they eat them, then it can be harmful to them. So one of the easiest things, to give you some peace of mind, as well as removing temptation, is to just cover it up and make it harder to get into. If you have a small trash can at the moment, then upgrade yourself to one that will have a lid and one that will be out of reach.
It’s important to keep key numbers nearby
It is so important to make sure that you make sure that you have things in place, like vet care for your dog. Then in an emergency, you will be good to go and know who to call. It is also a good idea to have a few other numbers on hand as well, just in case of emergency.
Dogs shouldn’t eat too quickly
If you have a dog that eats quite quickly, then you need to make sure that you slow things down a little, in order to keep them safe. If you have a pet dog that eats food really quickly, it could actually do some damage to them to avoid indigestion or bloating, which in dogs, can make it hard for them to breathe. Many people will try things like having a special feeding dish for them, with different ‘walls’ so that they have to take their time with each section, rather than pilling in all at once. But there are other options like feeding them smaller meals more often, or even hand feed them.
Be careful with your plants
There are some common houseplants that can be quite harmful to your dog. So if you have quite a lot of them around, then you might need to rethink things. Some of the worst plants to have in the home that are in reach for your dog, are things like aloe vera, daffodils, and tulips.
