You know that magical refresh button on your computer browser? I believe they all have them nowadays. The one you hit when your computer is out of sync, outdated, clogged, whatever? Scarlet has a refresh button. It’s been going on for awhile but I just named it over the weekend: The Refresh.
Often in the middle of a conversation or event or outing, Scarlet will brightly say, “Hi!” It’s out of nowhere. Sure she says it when you’re greeting her but The Refresh only occurs when you’ve already been hanging out with her; often when you haven’t even left the room. It’s her way of saying, “I don’t like where this conversation is going.” Or, “Umm…no. New topic.” It’s a do-over when she finds that the current experience is stale. That it’s out of sync, outdated, clogged, whatever. It’s brilliant, really. It’s like how when she’s overstimulated or overtired, she quietly walks away and plays by herself rather than throwing a tantrum or crying. The kid knows how to take care of herself. She knows how to take care of things. So if you’re with Scarlet and you’re playing together or talking to her and out of nowhere she looks at you and says, “Hi!”, just know that you’ve been refreshed. Time to perk things up, make things more exciting, time to shake it up and start fresh. Refreshed.
Speaking of refreshed, we had a LOVELY weekend in the sun. We visited friends near Boston on Saturday and on Sunday, my sister arrived and we wound up on a beautiful farm and then lost through the woods, until we eventually stumbled upon a sunny, Sonoma-like winery. There was wine, of course, but also cookies and cheese for Scarlet and me. Snapped only a few pictures of her over the weekend. Please excuse her low cut dress..
And last but not least. I’m on the Board of Directors for a wonderful organization, MotherWoman. For Mother’s Day, we teamed up with The Nields to make a love song video tribute to mothers. Cassidy, Scarlet and I participated in the video and look for us twice here. Also just try to watch this video and not cry.
