Sanity & Self is an app containing short expert-guided sessions in women’s wellness, fitness, mindfulness, personal growth and more. It’s so many self-care experts in one place, with one go-to app. And I’m talking hundreds of sessions from these experts, in sleep, massage, beauty, running, self-empowerment, personal training, yoga, breathing, meditation, & more.
Meng Li created Sanity & Self after she became a mom and realized that today’s self-care options are broken. You could do SoulCycle classes (although I don’t know if they have them around here), meditation at a studio, a facial, a massage, etc. and all of these options can be both expensive and time-consuming. What if Sanity & Self could provide you with the self-care you need throughout your day? Here’s how it works. The expert-guided sessions range from as short as two minutes, to 45 minutes, so you can regularly fit in your self-care whenever and wherever and with whatever.
The app is free to download! Some sessions are available for free, and the premium version gets you access to everything the app has to offer. Premium content is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year (which comes out to $8.33 a month). There is a founding member special of $39.99 for 6 months (which comes out to $6.66 a month).
This is the only app to bring all the aspects of self-care to one place with a whole mind and body approach. You can even sync calories and focus on breathing techniques. And need to move your body? You can energize with sessions of kickboxing, stretching, cycling, weights, etc. I love that I can find beauty tips and neck massage in the same place at the same time.
I love the variety of sessions and how they’re organized as colorful photo thumbnails. From breathing and journaling to feeling in control and managing your time, you also get audio cues for fitness training. Another favorite aspect is the in-app community page, where you can post polls, questions, photos, etc. or open up new topics. Self-care is important to me, but it always seemed so vague and unreachable. It means different things to different people. That’s why the app is powerful – because it covers a wide range of human topics and experiences, and lets you capture that wisdom – in palatable two minute bites, or for up to 45 minutes at a time. And with whatever you need on a given day or at any given time. You decide.
1 – Did you have one defining moment or experience that inspired you to create the app, or did the idea come through months or years of struggling with balance?
I became a mom and quickly realized how impossible it was to find time to take care of myself. I was exhausted, stressed, and had almost no time for self-care, even though I was taking care of everyone around me. It became apparent to me that today’s model of self-care is broken – it’s time-consuming and expensive, not ideal for those who are busy or can’t spend hundreds of dollars a month on wellness services. I created Sanity & Self to make it easier for an everyday woman to care for herself, combining everything she needs into one convenient go-to app made especially for her.
2 – Outside of Sanity & Self, what do you think is the most powerful way a woman can get self-care in a busy day?
If you have a moment, even if it’s just a one-minute break between meetings or a couple minutes alone in traffic at afternoon school pickup, take a deep breath. Hold the breath at the top for just a few seconds, try your best to clear your mind for just a moment, and exhale. This can be a powerful way to reset, is a proven method for relaxation and can even lower blood pressure.
3 – Do you think there’s a steep learning curve to learning how to meditate, and does Sanity & Self make it so that anyone can do it?
Our sessions are great for those who are beginners, or for others who have more experience in meditation. Each class is audio-guided by experts and backed by awesome, mood-boosting music. Our meditation sessions focus boosting vitality, stress relief, visualizing and more. We also have short, meditative breathing exercises that help you find balance, let go of the day and more.
4 – Do you think the stress problem in our country is getting worse and worse?
I do, especially with moms. Studies show that half of us have lain awake at night within the last month because of stress. Women are more stressed than men, and moms bear more of the burden of childcare than fathers. Sanity & Self helps women take a break from that and find time to recharge themselves.
5 – Say you ruled the world. How many minutes a day do you think moms should get to themselves?
There is no one size fits all, so my dream would be that each mom gets all the time she needs to take care of herself each day. Our feelings can signal to us what we need — it could be just 2 minutes, it could be 2 hours, or it could even be 2 days.
The quality matters as well. If a 2-minute self-care session is focused, mood-enhancing, and effective, you will feel better after that, whether it is a breathing exercise, a meditation, a feel-good workout, a fun makeup tutorial or a sip of wine. You can recharge, restore and rejuvenate in your busy day.
Each mom is different — and needs different things at different times. Our goals are the same: to recharge, rejuvenate, thrive and feel good.
6 – Do you have a favorite Sanity & Self session?
With more than 350 sessions on all kinds of wellness, all of the classes have something unique. So far, the most popular sessions have been the shorter breathing exercises. It shows how little time women take for themselves – we’re excited to find just a few minutes to breathe!
7 – What are the long-term effects of stress, and when do those symptoms typically kick in?
According to the APA, chronic stress affects both our physical and psychological well-being. It can cause problems including anxiety, insomnia, muscle pain, high blood pressure and a weakened immune system.
8 – How did you research the best expert-guided sessions?
Sanity & Self works with various professionals in their respective fields, including studio fitness instructors, massage therapists, aestheticians, life-coaches and more. Our experts have years of experience and are certified in all sorts of wellness practices including Ayurveda yoga, massage therapy, neuro linguistic programming, NASM, TRX, naturopathic aesthetics and more.
9 – Do you think even a 2 minute session a day can make a noticeable difference to someone’s life?
Even taking as little as 2 minutes a day can help boost your mood, connect to yourself and feel better. We know women are busy, so we made the sessions vary from as little as 2 minutes to as long as 45 minutes to make it easier for women to fit self-care into their schedule. Obviously getting more than just 2 minutes is ideal, but even a quick break in the day everyday can make an impact. Consistency matters, too, so we designed Sanity & Self to offer something women can easily fit into every day — for as little or much time as they have.
10 – Would men also like this app?
Right now, our main goal is to be the nonstop woman’s one-stop app for wellness and self care. Our target audience is women, especially moms who get such little care for themselves and want to be to a community they can lean on.
