That Time a Bear Entered My Workplace.

You may have even heard the story already.

If you know me, you know that I have an arsenal of strange, wonderful and wacky job stories. The truth is, I tried a lot of different things in only a short bit of time since my teen years, because it took me a long time to figure stuff out. Hey, I’m still learning! What I do know is that my first boss ever – my #OtherMother – set a precedent I couldn’t find much out there until I started working for myself as a writer and photographer. Her name is Colleen and she inspires my nomination today.

I was almost 17. I wasn’t necessarily an enterprising teenager – I sort of thought magic would just come to me and that hard work was for other people. What I now know is that magic DOES come, but hard work helps move it along and lets it grow. Magic came to me in the form of my first real job. My mom owned an art school and had a young client – Colleen – with two older kids and a nine-month-old baby. They were looking for a regular babysitter and I was looking for a regular (magical) job.

We all grew together. I made bone-headed moves, sure, (one involving changed a dirty diaper on the parent’s bed) but always kept the kids safe. The job went on for nearly a decade, although of course it wasn’t regular after I went to college. The kids were extraordinarily well-behaved. I babysat a lot between age 11 and into my 20’s, and I guess I got lucky. Somewhere over time, I just realized I loved them. It works that way. With everyone you love, romantic or otherwise, you have to fall in love. It’s a process – whether lightning fast or slow & steady. One day you realize you can’t remember your life before them.

I was nervous the week before my senior prom, for reasons I’ve been meaning to tell you all, but that’s a story for another day. I was nervous and I couldn’t eat for a few days. I skipped a day of school due to a stomachache. Colleen, my boss/other mother, had had a stomach virus earlier that week and was so scared she had given me the stomach virus the week of my prom. She came over to drop off my paycheck from the week before and there was an envelope with my name written on it. In it was a beautiful card about how worried she had been about me, and how that made her realize how much the family loved me. That was the day everything changed for me. They felt the same! She was so there for me, and still is.

Through growing up.. through health scares.. through her kids now being adults and making me feel old!

She’s my Other Mother. Even though she looks about my age!

And..the missing thing. The bear story. You don’t think I’d forget, right? Well I was babysitting all three kids and about four or five of their neighbors too. The baby was in his baby swing, and a full-grown BEAR walked right into the backyard. Didn’t even say hi! Luckily I was clear-headed and had the oldest kid gather all the littler ones and hustle them straight into the house while I calmly (with heart pounding, anyway) got the baby out of the swing and booked right inside. I’m a bear tamer too!

And it all started then, with my first job, and one of the best I’ve ever had.

So why am I talking about my lovely other mother? First, because how could I not? I have stories about that family that could fill up a blog, and all good stories too. And Mother’s Day is coming!
