Summer Routine for Your Skin: Tips for Outdoor Photographers
An outdoor photographer’s life is exciting and filled with adventures. After all, as long as you hold your camera, the world plays by your rules!
However, when the photo session is over and you return to the reality of daily life, you might realize your skin’s not so happy. Summer is especially rough on our skin because the sun rays are more powerful and the damage to the exposed unprotected skin is more severe.
In fact, experts warn us that, without the protection of a high SPF (I like mine around 50), the health risks increase with each day of sun exposure. But when you’re roaming around in nature or around urban areas, there are other risk factors that affect the skin.
This is why it’s important to have a strong skincare summer routine for morning and evening. And if you don’t have one, here are a few basic steps to keep your skin happy and healthy.
Morning Skincare Summer Routine
Each person’s skincare routine is different as it is influenced by a series of factors such as skin type, allergies, preferences, daily activity, desired results, and so on. Also, you can have as many steps in your morning summer routine as you want, but at the base, there should always be these three:
#1: Cleaning the skin
The first thing you should do each morning is clean your face with a mild cleansing solution. This way, you remove any sebum buildup that happened during the night and prepare the skin for the next steps.
#2: Moisturizing
Once the skin is clean, it’s time to apply a moisturizer. In this case, it’s important to buy moisturizer creams designed to keep your skin protected in a harsh outdoor environment.
The type and thickness of the moisturizer differ depending on your skin type (dry, combination, or oily) and preferences. However, for summer it‘s best to choose a moisturizing cream with a light formula that quickly absorbs into the skin.
#3: SPF
Whether it’s summer or winter, indoors or outdoors, SPF is your BFF (for every bit of skin that’s exposed to the sunrays)! This step should not be skipped under any circumstances and you should adjust the protection factor to fit your needs.
For instance, if you are going to be outside all day during summer, an SPF50 is your best bet. Also, it needs to be reapplied every four hours, so make sure to pack it with your camera and lens kit.
Once you have gone through these steps, you are ready to face the sun. Of course, you can add steps and personalize the routine to fit your needs.
Evening Skincare Summer Routine
In the evening, the routine is mostly the same. However, you should pay more attention to the cleaning step to make sure you remove every trace of makeup and debris that accumulated during the day.
This way, your cleaning step may also require a makeup remover and a toner. These two products should be gentle with your skin and help you remove sebum, makeup, and dust without any excessive rubbing.
Once your face is clean, continue with a moisturizer and maybe a Vitamin C serum or a night mask to plump up and hydrate the skin. Also, don’t forget to care for your hands and neck areas.
Wrap Up
If you want to be a pro outdoor photographer, you must learn to care for your skin the same way as you do for your tools. You may be behind the camera, but your skin is right in front of the damaging rays of the sun and other factors!
