Work As A Team

If you’re not in a relationship or have the other parent in the picture, then it can prove quite difficult to work as a team when you’re the only member. It might be worth getting a family member or friend to be there when you need them. If you do have a partner or the other parent is with you, then it’s important to work as a team. There are going to be days when you’re tired and stressed out, but that can be a great opportunity to have a second person there who can help with that and to relieve you of some duties just so that you’ve got a moment or two to yourself. Communication is essential, so make sure you’re working together in order for it to be helpful for you when it comes to navigating parenthood for the first time. Find ways that work for you as a couple because it’s likely to be a different experience for everyone, and what you can manage is going to be different too. It’s ok if you need a break or need that support at times.

Breastfeeding Is Difficult

Breastfeeding is certainly something that can be hard to grasp and get right when you’re a new mum. You have this pressure of needing to feed your child, and you’re the source of that food. However, it’s important to remember that this is an experience that is new and that it’s important to give yourself a breather when it comes to managing this element of parenthood. Start to look out for the tell-tale signs that suggest your baby is starting to get hungry. That way, you’re dealing with a baby who is less angry or frustrated as you try and get them to latch on. Your baby will know how long it needs to latch on for, so let them guide you rather than you controlling what they have. Get yourself into a comfortable position and take a look online for different techniques until you find one that works best for you. Use balms to help look after the skin and to cause it from being too painful.

Ask For Help

Asking for help when you’re a new parent is not you failing. As we all go through it for the first time, there’s going to be times where you’re going to need a break, or you need some assistance. This is especially so when you’re a single parent, but it’s also the case when you’ve got two parents. Being on constant demand all the time can be exhausting, and sometimes you need a bit of help. Whether you’re asking your partner for help or getting that assistance from a close family member or friend, gather a support network. Don’t feel like you need to take all this pressure on yourself. Questions are also going to be a common thing for new parents, so ask your friends and family who are parents for advice when it’s needed. Questions like what’s causing my newborn’s skin to peel? Or how old should your baby be when they start teething? These are all things that can be helped by others with experience.

Remember That This Is All New

It’s helpful to remind yourself or your partner that this is something that is brand new, and there will be times where you feel like you’ve failed or you’re messing up. However, providing you’re not doing anything to intentionally cause harm, you need to remind yourself that you’re still learning. Becoming a new parent is a challenge that is going to test you in many ways, and it’s not something that’s easy or comes easy for everyone. Try to look after yourself mentally by reminding yourself that you will get the hang of this, and it’s something that will get easier with practice. Don’t give yourself too much of a hard time and make sure you have those around you who will be there to support you through the tough times.

Keep A Routine For You

When you have a newborn, everything in your usual routine can go up in the air. It also means that your daily life can become a bit of a mess, and that’s not helpful when you’re trying to keep a handle on sanity as a new parent. So instead of letting everything go, try to hold onto some semblance of a routine. Sure it’s not going to be like your old one, but you can adapt to it in order to have a grip on yourself and your life. Even though we end up losing some of our old life, it doesn’t mean that you have to lose yourself when it comes to being a parent. Try and find some structure in all of the madness!

Have Some Baby-Free Time

This seems like an impossible thing when you become a parent for the first time, but just like keeping a routine, you need to have some baby-free time. That doesn’t mean going away for a week’s holiday, it could simply be a spa day with your partner or going to one on your own. It could be treating yourself to a manicure or getting your haircut. These small things can be a big difference to how you feel and to remind you that you’re still your own person, you just have the responsibility for a baby too. As a couple, it’s also important to make time for yourself too. Try to spend some time together, perhaps getting a family member or friend to babysit whilst you have date night. Again, it doesn’t need to be for too long as you’re still bonding, but you can afford to spend some time on yourself for a change.

Get Sleep Where You Can

Sleep is definitely something to try and get as much of as possible when it comes to being a new parent. The demands that being a parent has on any one individual can be a challenge, and for the most part of your nighttime, you might not get a lot of sleep. With that in mind, any opportunity to get sleep should be taken full advantage of. Whether it’s a quick nap in the afternoon or a lie in whilst your partner takes the morning shift, it can certainly help. Sleep routines are certainly something that goes out of the window, so make sure you take some time to catch up on that sleep as and when it’s needed.

Becoming a new parent has its challenges and it’s something that you will learn from each and every day. The most important thing to remember is that it’s a new challenge and therefore you will do things wrong. Everything you do will be a lesson that you can improve upon, so don’t beat yourself up about it too much. Enjoy this exciting new chapter of your life, whether it’s with your partner, or without.
