Relax, Don’t Do It, When You Want to Go to It

It’s not so much that I don’t know how to relax – but that the things that relax other people don’t always relax me.

Remind me not to talk about the hot baths in Calistoga or the time I accidentally flashed a bunch of people at a hot springs.

Never have I ever.. had a professional massage! Or an unprofessional one really. It used to be that Never have I ever.. ridden a roller coaster but I sure took care of that one. And you know what? Going on roller coasters kind of relaxes me. It’s that aftermath when you know you’ve done it and it felt sort of awful and amazing in your stomach and you have this lifetime to let go. Little by little, better by better. Never have I ever used alcohol or anything recreational to relax, but you do you!

And I’ll do me. It usually involves rainbow sprinkles and rainbows and open fields. And smiles.

I need it now more than ever, in ways I can’t even tell you yet. It works, though. My blood pressure is great and no one is more surprised by that than me, so maybe all the things I do bear weight and transformation. And maybe in this mixed up and crazy world, we can all find that special something – or ten special somethings that help us bear that weight and transformation. And we need those somethings – all in our own ways that maybe we can’t even tell each other about. Yet.

Ten Ways This Situationally Anxious Girl Likes to Relax:

1 – I cuddle my dogs, and occasionally my cat. It’s more like she cuddles me – when I least expect it – like when I’m knee deep in work or taking a nice bath. Speaking of which.. (see #2) The dogs, though. They take that love like candy.

2 – I take warm baths (not hot) and I put in the good stuff. Salts, bubbles, oils, the kitchen sink, giraffes, whatever. We have an Amazon Echo in the bathroom and it’s near the head of the bath. Bruce Hornsby turned on low with a magazine? Bliss.

3 – Crossword puzzles. Many, many crossword puzzles. That’s my version of a stiff drink at the end of a long day. I am way out of practice but I always remember how good they make me feel. I like to buy the NY Times ones by the book-full.

4 – I love my silly movies and my silly, and also not-so-silly shows. A blissful stolen weekday afternoon with the late winter sunshine shining onto the couch while I catch up on the DVR with some chocolates? Or maybe late at night. Stone alone.

5 – I like to read books at the dinner table. And the breakfast table. And the lunch table. Also when I’m not eating too!

6 – I like to listen to my favorite songs in my car, and I like to listen to them LOUDLY. And maybe thrash around a bit.

7 – My kids. They also cause the opposite of relaxation, but we can always love and find joy together. We’re at this cool point where I’d rather they know I get nervous and strange but can come back from it, than pretend it never happens at all.

8 – Good sleep, water, good food, good loving, and occasionally spraying an herbal anti-anxiety spray into my mouth!

9 – You can call it weird, or slightly OCD but I love to count sometimes, like if I’m on a plane and we’re taking off and landing. I like to count to 100 and see what has happened since I started. I also like to stare at my hands, reach for someone else’s hands, stare at the sky, or stare at a sunset. Grounding things are good things. They pull you in and soothe your soul.

10 – Editing photos and writing, writing, writing.

Sunshine daydreams might even be #1 on my list, but the weather is so finicky here..

  1. You are so rainbow sprinkles my friend and in more ways than way very soon here, too! That said so much of your list I can definitely relate to and I guess that is why we are “twinsie” friends always and forever <3

  2. Music is probably the quickest “relaxer” for me. It immediately takes me to a different mindset, and I can choose playlists based on what I am feeling. I also find going for a walk can be a way to relieve physical nervous tension (when it is warm enough!), or to bake in the sun like a potato on a beach:)

  3. These are all wonderful ways to relax, Tamara. I love a hot bath, too. Magazines, perusing Instagram, a glass of wine, a cup of tea…pets!! I don’t have pets but I look forward to having a cat and a dog again one day. Loved your accompanying photos. Oh, and Brilliant Disguise one of my old favorites. happy Friday!

    1. I was never a cat person but she’s such great company for working at home and being alone. She totally curls around me. And walks around the bath when I take them – ha!

  4. Oh my gosh, yes! Sleep and cuddling animals are pretty much the BEST thing ever. And usually doughnuts, just not when I am on my KETO diet. Ten pounds down though 🙂

  5. Whenever my mind is free from worry and physical pain l feel relaxed and grateful. Both of these are constant works in progress, The warmth of the sun, the sound of a soft and gentle rainfall, looking at fine art and photography, especially colorful Autumn landscapes, playing my six string or my piano, and singing softly help me to feel a deep inner peace.

      I really like to listen to Bruce Hornsby’s “Dreamland”.. that’s a nice nice nice one.

  6. Yes it is totally time to relax! Wasn’t that book great? This weekend I had a chance to relax (with my pup) and it felt so wonderful! We binge-watched tv.

    1. YES! An incredible book. That’s so awesome about your relaxing weekend. This will sound weird but I kinda love when Cassidy goes away because I love solo couch time with the puppy.

  7. Tamara, I love ALL the ways that help you relax. I’m so glad you have them! I’m with you on having that down time in front of the tv- ALONE. I need much more alone time to recover from life than I ever did. And of course, writing writing writing! I love to go for long walks and during the winter, I feel like a caged animal at times. But with spring coming, I am already feeling the lift, the pull, the freedom that comes with doing it.

    1. I hear that. My old co-worker said I was like a tiger in a cage in winter. It’s a true description!
      Even just thinking about spring helps. Or the extra sunlight. Even if it’s still cold and snowy, that extra light does so much.
