Pup Presents: What Your Dog Wants This Holiday Season!

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of The J.M. Smucker Company. The opinions and text are all mine.

It's holiday time. Don't forget your dog! What does your dog or dog lover in your life REALLY want for the holidays? A stocking or gift box full of treats! #ad

Ok, be honest – do you or do you not give your pets a stocking for the holidays?

In my family, growing up, the stockings were held by the chimney with care – and my mom DEFINITELY bought or hand-made stockings for our pets. In fact, we still have holiday mornings with my family at my parent’s farm and we bring our dog, Athena, with us. I love that my mom gets her a stocking too. Then we fill it with good stuff! It’s to distract her from eating our wrapping paper and holiday candy, but it’s mainly to show her how much we love her. Dogs need holiday love too!

Before Athena came into my life, I didn’t know how much I needed a dog. I didn’t know I needed an exercise accountability partner, a co-pilot, a therapist, a playmate for the kids, and a friend. Here are five reasons I’m close with her:

1 – It’s good for my health. Not only does Athena convince me to go to the dog park.. daily.. she’s also good for my mental and emotional health. When I’m going through tough times, and I definitely have gone through tough times since she came into our lives, she’s always happy to see me. She’s always good for a cuddle and a kiss. She helped me overcome my biggest struggles in 2014-2016, with Scarlet starting kindergarten, and Des starting daycare. It was also my most challenging time to approach the age my father had been when he had passed away, and I have Athena to thank for the regular exercise.

2 – Athena makes me feel less alone. I don’t know what I’d do without my pets! I work alone all day in my office and the long New England winters can be hard. Knowing I have two warm bodies to spend time with every day means everything.

3 – She puts me in a better mood. She improves my sense of humor and invites me to truly “play” to release stress.

4 – She increases safety, or feelings of safety. Athena barks if a squirrel runs in the yard!

5 – She makes an excellent co-pilots. I love taking Athena to Cape Cod or my parent’s house or just on errands!

So I celebrate her during the holidays with a stocking full of tasty pup presents I get at Walmart!

Here are five tips for the perfect dog stocking:

1 – You can buy a stocking nearly anywhere. The first thing we like to do is write her name on it in glitter glue or something like that. Scarlet likes to add felt holiday decorations too. Then it’s perfect for hanging!

2 – We put a grooming shampoo or brush in the stocking.

3 – Athena generally gets a new leash or collar or sweater for the dog park in her holiday stocking!

4 – Make sure you hide the stocking away from curious pets, especially if there are treats in there. Speaking of which…

5 – Fill your holiday stocking with the tastiest pup presents from Walmart! Walmart has a variety of intriguing natural dog treats. You want to ensure that your stocking fillings are made for dogs, because some human foods – like chocolate – are poisonous for dogs. We love Milk-Bone Flavor Snacks and Pup-Peroni, Original Beef Flavor. We find them in the dog food aisle of Walmart. When I was shopping for all of my holiday items, I couldn’t resist buying treats for the dog. She’ll be so happy when she “opens” her stocking and sees exactly what we hand chose for her. I put a lot of heart and thought into it.

Milk-Bone Flavor Snacks come in five delicious flavors that Athena will love. Show that love with a yummy Milk-Bone biscuit. They’re produced in Buffalo, NY and are for dogs of all sizes! I have bought these since I was a kid and my Samoyed.

We love putting Pup-Peroni at the top of Athena’s stocking. Real beef is the #1 ingredient, and with more real beef* and a mouthwatering aroma, dogs can’t resist Pup-Peroni Original Beef Flavor dog snacks. You can bring the package along anywhere.
