And that is always when I’m with one of my favorite Wing Women. A Wing Woman swoops in to save women from difficult situations or embarrassing moments by providing helpful life advice. We all have a Wing Woman in our lives, whether it’s a friend or other loved one, a family member, or even a public figure.
The thing is, they can tell when you’re down and out. It’s kind of their job. One of my favorite Wing Women of all time – my old boss, Colleen – once told me that she can tell when I’m 99% fine. That means even that 1% is evident to a Wing Woman in your life. I was touched by that in such a deep way, that she must have said it over ten years ago and I’ve never forgotten it. It goes just like that with my three favorite Wing Women.
It’s because each one of them is my Wing Woman, and I hope, and I hope, and I hope, that I’m a Wing Woman to each of them. It’s my mom and two sisters. We really are four of a kind. During life, there are phases and stages and ages – and you go in and out of people’s lives at weird paces. At one point, I lived in California. My younger sister and I have even fought over a couch. My older sister and I used to fight over bathroom real estate, and just about everything else too. My mom and I have had strange phases because mother-daughter pairs go through strange phases! Life and time, above all, are too precious to really think about any of that. Instead we focus on our love and bonding – which comes to all of us in spades. And for life, it stays.
Right now, it’s hard with the three of them in NJ, and me in New England. My two sisters had their first babies two weeks apart, and are both ending their maternity leaves right now. I wish so badly to be there for them, but we all message and check in on each other daily. I’m the distant one out here in left (New England) field, but my heart is very much always with them. When my cat passed away, when I got into a fight with Cassidy, when I felt overwhelmed with work, or underwhelmed with parenting. No matter what it is, the truth comes out when I hear one of my Wing Women’s voices, or see their faces.
My favorite story of her being there for me was the night before my wedding. I wanted no one else in my wedding suite with me but her, and I had the worst case of cold feet ever! I knew I loved my future husband with all of my heart, but I was so nervous to enter into this life phase. I was so nervous I could barely eat or breathe, and Lindsay stayed up late into the night with me telling me all of the most wonderful pieces of advice for love and marriage. When I expressed fear that my husband and I were so different, she urged me to see how wonderful those differences could be together, and how well we would and could complement each other. I love how she soothed me to sleep on one of the scariest nights of my life, because I was so nervous about standing up in front of hundreds of people the next day. She got married years later, and I stood up for her. I was shaking, but she had done it for me and failure was not an option. She strengthened me that day, like a true Wing Woman.

And a very special shout-out to my friend Jen, who came right when I called her frantically one morning because my car wouldn’t start before school/daycare. She Googled how to jumpstart a car, and did it right then and there. I appreciate YOU!
