I Mustache You Some Questions for Ask Away Friday.

Here’s a weird fact about me.

I never eat until I’m 100% (or more) full. There’s actually a name for this – Hara Hachi Bu – and it means eating until you’re 80% full. I also eat slowly. I was born this way and it’s not a practice of strength or willpower. So when people complain about how full they are after Thanksgiving dinner, I don’t really relate. I’m pretty much dreaming about mashed potatoes again, or popcorn, or ice cream, or something, within my usual 2-3 hours after eating. In fact, I’m dreaming about them all right now.

I haven’t eaten in 12 hours, you see, but before breakfast, it’s my slightly delayed time to write my Ask Away Friday post! For the holiday week, I decided to try something new and I borrowed this wonderful prompt/graphic from Love Life Surf.

Four names that people call me, other than my real name:

  1. Tammy. Yup. In fact, everyone who met me before my mid-20’s calls me this. Most have not made the switch to Tamara, which I understand, because it’s hard to call someone something else after so many years. However. If someone who met me as Tamara starts to calls me Tammy, it’s not cool. Not at all. The change took so many years because it couldn’t change until I started to think of myself as Tamara. And I do. I’ll always be Tammy to some, though.

  2. Tam. I actually like it. I once found that it wasn’t even so much that I liked when people called me Tam, but that I liked the people I noticed had already been calling me Tam.

  3. Tam Tam. Really, I only like this when my mom calls me this.

  4. Tamara Camera. I had clients call me this recently to their sons while I was photographing them. It was fun!

Four jobs I have had (not counting any current jobs):

Sheesh. You have all heard many of these stories..

  1. Innkeeper at an urban bed & breakfast
  2. Pizza Girl (pizza delivery)
  3. Inside Sales Rep
  4. Babysitter

Four movies I’ve watched more than once:

  1. Rocky Horror Picture Show
  2. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
  3. Frozen (but honestly only twice!)
  4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (my favorite)

Four books I’d recommend:

  1. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
  2. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
  3. Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner
  4. The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult

My little sister just helped me with this list!

Four places I have lived:

  1. New Brunswick, New Jersey
  2. Conway, Massachusetts
  3. Flanders, New Jersey
  4. San Francisco, baby

Four places I have been:

  1. Yellowstone National Park – in Montana and Wyoming
  2. Vancouver, B.C.
  3. San Diego, CA

Four places I’d rather be right now:

  1. Here, but eating breakfast here. (it’s on its way)
  2. Calistoga, CA at Scarlett’s Country Inn
  3. Yellowstone National Park, taking morning wintery photos
  4. San Diego, baby

Four things I don’t eat:

  1. Strong, smelly cheeses – brie, goat cheese, feta, blue cheese, and others like that (but I love other cheeses!)
  2. Onions – truly my least favorite food. They smell like body odor. People realize that, right?
  3. Lamb
  4. Cilantro. I have that gene that makes it taste bitter or like soap. It’s science, baby

Four of my favorite foods:

  1. Mashed potatoes
  2. Well made cookies
  3. Broccoli and cheese
  4. Clam Chowder

Honorable mention for milk chocolate!

Four TV shows that I watch:

  1. Once Upon a Time
  2. Nashville
  3. New Girl
  4. Revenge

Four things I am looking forward to this year:

Hmm.. this year is winding down, but I’ll answer it literally and not go into 2015 and spring and summer (sigh)

  1. Our town’s holiday parade! (tomorrow)
  2. Santa’s trains at Look Park
  3. Seeing holiday lights with the kids and yelling out, “LIGHTS!”
  4. Well. Christmas morning with the kids

Four things I’m always saying:

  1. “Fart into a shoebox.” (it’s from a Tina Fey movie)
  2. “I love you.”
  3. “Really???”
  4. “Should we go get cookies?”

Hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

    1. I love that you didn’t have four places to live or four jobs. I wish I had less of both! i’m deathly looking forward to some of the things you were looking forward to!

  2. Tam Tam, that is cute. Totally sounds like a mom nickname! You and I have had similar jobs, LOL! Broccoli cheese? I love it! My favorite soup! I tend to say, “I love you”, “Leave your brother alone.”, “Please acknowledge your sister” and “Let’s go have coffee!”.

  3. I read all the books you listed. And you’re right, they all rock. The Lovely Bones still chills me though. Enjoy your parade! The base is doing one next week.

    1. That doesn’t surprise me! And I still haven’t read it again. I just loved it in my youth. Now I might find it creepy. Or as a parent, it might disturb me. You too?

  4. Haha! I loved reading through this one. Lamb? I love it! We do share a love for mashed potatoes. My husband tells me he loves my sweet potato mashed potatoes a whole lot too. He says it’s like eating sweet potato pie without the crust. 🙂

    1. That sounds delicious. I don’t really love sweet potatoes the way I love white potatoes, but that’s because I like them when they’re made savory. Not sweet!!

  5. I’m about to head off to New Brunswick for the afternoon! I have a very close friend who can’t eat cilantro, and I remember her posting a NY Times article about the science behind it.
It’s only in my adult life…well, really, the last few years…that I have started introducing myself as Bev. Plenty of people call me Beverly, but it also feels really formal. And I guess it’s because I’ve only known you as an adult, but I don’t see you as a Tammy!

  6. These are such fun facts about you, Tamara! Mine pale in comparison, but I’ll do my honest best. 4 Names: Little Eddie, Eddie Spaghetti, Church Mouse, Bambi. 4 Jobs: Quality Assurance Tech. 3 Health and Fitness Centers, Salesperson in a Men’s Clothing Store, Security Guard in an Aerospace Facility. 4 Movies: The Sound Of Music, Bye Bye Birdie, The Sting, The Music Man. 4 places I’ve lived: New Brunswick, (born St. Peter’s Hospital) Metuchen, Highland Park, Bridgewater. 4 Places to be: Cape May, Charleston, S.C. This was fun Tamara, please forgive me if it’s a little long.

    1. thanks for playing along! I feel like I got to see a lot about you that I didn’t know. Sounds like you had a health problem that is now better. That makes me very happy!
      Definitely share some musical favorites.
And we both lived in New Brunswick.
I don’t actually drink any alcohol. A Swiss Alps Chalet sounds like heaven.

  7. I love this week’s because we get to learn a little bit more than we knew already. I’ve read a few of your books and watched a few of your movies. I watch Once Upon a Time without fail and have yet to watch Revenge but heard it’s pretty good. I do however watch How to get away with Murder. 🙂 Love it! I have 2 more weeks here then I’ll be off to the Caribbean to soak up some sun. Wish I could take you with me but I’ll be back. Have a marvelous weekend!

  8. Yes, you should get cookies…lol. Your cookie photos always look yummy.I made my kids some cooies yesterday and they are all gone today. My kids enjoy good cookies too 🙂

  9. Something I’ve never blogged about or shared yet it’s no secret is that I’m a notoriously fast eater. This stems from 2 reasons…one a job for many years that only allows a 30 minute meal break (albeit paid time). The other being that I wait TOO long in between meals then I’m starving. It’s horrible bad habit. Wish you had been my pizza delivery gal! 😉 I’ve been to the same places as you except Disney World – I just heard last night at work that they have underwater restaurant name Nemo there? Oh yes on wintry Yellowstone pics – it’s so beautiful there! Cilantro – no beuno! I try to always remember when ordering Mexican food for them to please omit it. I absolutely LOVE Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and it inspired a trip I took to Chicago 20-some years ago. I’m not a big sweets eater but yes please on all four of your food likes. And LOL to “Fart into a shoebox.” First time I’ve heard that and funny! Have a great day, Tamara 🙂

    1. It’s actually from a blooper reel from the Tina Fey movie, “Date Night.” You could probably watch it on YouTube.
I think it makes sense why you are a fast eater. Although eating that way supposedly not good for blood sugar, right? I mean waiting too long between meals. I totally do it too, actually!

    2. Oh! Never been to Nemo! I did go on the Finding Nemo ride and we watched the show after it featuring Crush the turtle. We were told it was a can’t miss event. The ride was awesome!

  10. I am finally on and was out all morning Black Friday shopping with my mom. And I finally found something we don’t agree on and that would be I don’t like clam chowder, but I like blue cheese and goat cheese, too. But still so much here I do agree with you, like the books and oh yes I have seen Ferris Bueller’s Day Off so many times over the years I lost count and well Frozen that was a given with my two, lol!!! 🙂

    1. Well I guess we can’t be total twins, but you’re still the closest thing.
How was shopping? We actually went downtown. It was not a mob scene, but I still felt a little scared that it would be. I was totally brave about it, though.

      1. You are roght still are the closest thing and so glad for that. Shopping was awesome and honestly not as crazy or busy as yhe hype would have you believe. And so proud of you 😉

  11. Oh, I’ve seen this on a different blog before and thought I should ‘consider myself tagged’ and play along. But somewhere along the line I forgot. Maybe I’ll do a post on the weekend. But I would have a problem with the books as I do not read that much these days. Anyways – back to your answers… hmm, you put brie and smelly cheeses in one category? I guess we have a different understanding of brie 😉 To me brie is the least smelly and flavorsome cheese of them all, and I like it. Maybe it is a different meaning again in America. Just yesterday I talked to David about Gouda, because he mentioned ‘yum, we hadn’t had gouda in a while’ and I was like ‘huh? I did not buy any gouda’. So, we looked and the cheese he referred to really had ‘gouda’ labelled on it, but it is very, very far from the real Dutch gouda that I know 😀 The things you learn when you travel and/or live abroad.
    Have a great weekend!

    1. Isn’t that funny? I’ve probably had bad American brie. For me, it is smelly. Maybe cheddar is too and I just don’t mind it. I really couldn’t tell you because I’m such a sensitive eater because of the super tasting genes, that what I say doesn’t necessarily make sense. You are making me hungry for a good gouda, though!

  12. Great post, Tamara. I love the list Q & A. I have a bone to pick though…since when are there poorly made cookies? Really, I mean I could eat any homemade cookie and LOVE it! I love Zooey Deschenel. I loved Eternal Sunshine…The Lovely Bones was an awesome book but the movie sucked IMHO. It sounds like you have so much to look forward to still in 2014. Have a fun weekend!

    1. Haha! I should’ve worded it better. It should just be homemade cookies. Or well-made bakery cookies. I can’t stand boxed cookies. I can’t stand processed cookies. I think you made an excellent point with me, though!

  13. Doctor Who didn’t even make the list??? Really??

Can’t blame you on the Tammy. My real name can be shortened, but my parents were rather insistent that it shouldn’t be so my back bristles when someone does it. Yuck.

    Good AAF!! Happy weekend!!

      1. Truly…I’m surprised you have time for TV between the blogging, reading and commenting. Oh…and you know…the whole parenting and photography career. You must actually have a functioning TARDIS in your backyard. And I am just chuffed that my autocorrect knows the word TARDIS now…

        1. I really don’t! I am usually about a month behind on TV, and it’s only in the last hour or so before bed when I can’t muster up the energy for the rest.

  14. I say “seriously?” or “seriously!” a lot!! HAHA. Hmm, okay so I’ve known before that we’re on the same page with onions. I also can’t take the smell and the taste. I actually listed down the books you mentioned. I need some good reads so thank you!

  15. I did this too.. it was so much fun! LOVE Eternal Sunshine… that moment when he realizes he doesn’t want to erase his memories. My. Heart!
Hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving!

  16. My nickname as a kid was Jenny. My kids can always tell what genre someone knows me from if they call by that name.

4 things I am always saying: 1. Please don’t touch your butt 2. Stop touching my butt! 3. Please don’t scream the word butt 4. I love you- haha got ya there 🙂

  17. I can’t believe after all these years of seeing the mustache the light bulb finally clicked. Do they all mean “must ask” or no? Otherwise I don’t have a clue.

Anyway, I throw away blue cheese and feta way before it’s expired because I swear it’s expired. I love them once they get on my salad mixed in with other ingredients, I just have trouble with taking the lid off and getting it to my salad. Yuck! Plus blue cheese looks like molded feta cheese. I also try not to look at it as I’m eating it and if it’s a big fat crumble I just pick it out of my salad altogether.

Let’s see Four Movies I’ve watched more than FOUR times – Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, The Rescuers & The Rescuers Down Under. I could seriously do a marathon today with these and just chillax.

P.S. I was seriously miserable after Thanksgiving dinner. I eat too fast and then I’m just overfull.

    1. Yup! It’s a play on, “I must ask you some questions.”

I think some of those cheeses really are moldy. Right? And I think it’s by design. Doesn’t really warm my heart.

  18. Oh I’m so glad that you played along! Are you feeling better? I do hope so. I’ve been so busy, off-line, traveling, out-of-it that I haven’t been keeping up with much lately! I totally get the nickname thing. When I moved to CA in 8th grade, my friends called me Chris. But only those friends are allowed to call me that. No one else. Love your movies and books. I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!

    1. Chris! I can’t see it!

I definitely am feeling better. It’s been a bit over a week, so it’s actually not 100%. I hate how that takes two or three weeks.

  19. Four favorite foods: Butternut Squash Soup from Grappa in Park City, UT. Newman’s Organics Mint O Cookies. French Fries. When I’m drunk Chicken Tenders with Honey Mustard. Can you tell I’m on Paleo and can’t eat this????!!!

  20. great answers! We have a lot in common! Revenge YES (although I’m not sure where they are going but that is the case every year–) I like Tam! simple and cute! One thing we differ on though, onions! I throw them on pretty much everything!

  21. I am glad you like other cheeses! I mainly like the other cheeses like you. And when I was young people called me Nat Nat and then Nat. Lol neither are my fave! Is it me or do people keep asking the same questions about past jobs? 🙂

    1. I feel like there have been a lot of questions about that lately!
And I totally love cheese. I’m a bit addicted to it. I guess I just only like the ones I like.

    1. Thanks! It can be very cute when it’s used for affection. When I was a kid, people did it in a teasing way and I didn’t like it then. I like it now!

  22. I can’t believe you’re throwing brie in there with the strong, smelly cheeses! I completely agree with blue cheese and goat’s cheese being nasty, but brie is lovely! Brie, bacon and red onion chutney are a combination to die for!

    1. I know! I know that probably is in a different category, but I was just talking about cheeses I don’t like. For some reason for me, brie is very strong. Boo! I wish I liked it.

  23. I don’t eat until I’m stuffed either – I used to but after having my gall bladder out I’ve learned that it just makes me miserable. I would rather end the meal still enjoying it:)
I don’t like most of the smelly cheeses but I do love Feta!!!

    1. I have a friend getting out gallbladder out this month! I wonder what causes that? Anyway, I hope she’ll be happier after.
Feta is yucky to me but it seems to be a hit!

  24. Oh I like Tam Tam…and of course Tamera Camera is too cute. What movie was that TIna Fey line from ? I have seem most of her movies but do not remember that. By the way I think of you every time I cook with cilantro.

    1. Funny about the cilantro! It’s a gene! It’s not my fault!

Ok, so I’m not positive it’s in the movie “Date Night” or just in the bloopers at the end credits, but Cassidy and I went to see it in the theater and we stayed for after the credits.
I hope you cry with laughter:

  25. I’m late to the game, but I’ll play.
Four names: Dane, Daner, D, Danita (my mom)
Four things I don’t eat: mayo, sour cream, ranch dressing, ribs
That’s all I can muster right now. I am coming down hard from the holiday weekend, but that’s because it was so good and relaxing.

  26. I’ve read all your favorite books except The Storyteller. Lovely Bones is one of my FAVORITES too. Have you read any of her others? Intense doesn’t even begin to describe them. After spending my entire life claiming “I hate bleu cheese” I have been converted. One of my chef friends makes blue cheese scalloped potatoes that are unbelievable!

    1. Well I do love scalloped potatoes. Wow.
I haven’t read any of her other books, and I also haven’t read this one in probably a decade. I just remember it really touching my heart. I wonder if it would affect me differently now that I’m a mom! What do you think?

    1. I definitely like that nickname when it’s used with affection! There was just one girl in fourth grade who did it in a teasing way. And I wanted to slap her. Otherwise, I like it.

  27. It’s been a while since I’ve read one of your “Ask Away Fridays.” I guess I’ve been pretty busy. I am looking forward to Christmas morning with my kids too. This year a little elf visited us from the North Pole, for the first time. I think I am going to write about him in my next blog post. Have a great week!

    1. I had forgotten to schedule a partner so I did this one last minute.
I can’t wait to read your blog post about the elf! We haven’t done that yet but maybe next year.

  28. 1. What if it’s really good broccoli and cheese – but with onions? I think broccoli smells worse than onions.

    2. Tam Tam. I couldn’t call you that and feel like a grownup. Good thing I rarely feel like a grownup.

    3. I think “should we go get cookies?” and “I love you” are the same thing.

    1. Onions ruin everything for me. One funny story is that a friend came to a potluck with macaroni and cheese. Another friend and I were so excited. The problem? It was filled with onions, which I can’t eat, and bacon, which my other friend can’t eat. We still give her a hard time about that.
Soo.. Are you saying you’d call me Tam Tam?
And should we go get cookies?

      1. Sauteed onions on a philly cheesesteak, though?

I would have helped your baking friend polish off that mac and cheese. For you and no-bacon girl, of course. What are friends for?

Yes Tam Tam … let’s go get cookies.

  29. I know you’re a Tamara, and I get the Tammy connection, but you are not a Tammy to me…. Now, Tam Tam sounds fun 🙂
Okay, so now let’s add our list: cookies, coffee, Ferries Bueller, story telling, and picture-taking when we meet 🙂

  30. 1. Tam Tam
    2. My dad has the cilantro thing. I always thought he was faking that it tastes like soap to him until I met you.
    3. I’ve been a limo driver, a marketing exec, an underwear store worker, and never a waitress but I did work at Kentucky Fried Chicken in high school.
    4. You’re the bomb diggity. If I did an ask away w/ you, would you give me really good questions? Like for real good?

    1. Your dad isn’t faking it! It’s science, baby.

So is KFC as disgusting as people say??

And. I would hope to give you good questions! The pressure would be on. I like challenges.

  31. Fun questions! It saddens me that you have aversions to onions and cilantro. (okay, I get it if the onions are raw…but I can’t imagine what some things would taste like without onion in them) Something tells me, though that you can probably quote a large quantity of Frozen even though you’ve really only seen it twice. Here are four places I’d rather be right now: 1) in bed, 2) napping on a sunny beach shore, 3) curled up asleep with my husband for a one-on-one trip, and 4) cuddled under a warm blanket in front of a roaring fire – asleep. (I’m a bit sleepy right now, if you hadn’t noticed…)

    1. I live my whole life without onions! So I wouldn’t even know the difference. Maybe it is more bland for me.
All four of your places to be sound so wonderful!

  32. I love the “baby” on some of your responses, because its like saying “oh, yeah!” I totally rather be at Disney or in San Fran right now. Anywhere but here, as long as I’m with my family. I think for movies, Lion King and Aladdin would be at the top of my more than 4’s. I loved those movies as a kid and even now as an adult. For jobs…oh geez, let’s just say I’m a Jill of all trades! 🙂

    1. haha! Once I started with “baby” I couldn’t stop.
I’ve definitely seen Lion King more than four times, come to think of it. I love it!
And I hear you on the Jill of all trades thing!

  33. Lol I love “san Francisco, baby!” How you feel about Tamara, I feel about Rebecca. I’ll always be a Becky, beck, or whatever variation but I’m Rebecca NOW. I finally prefer it though it’s still a weird fit because yeah…never felt like one

Ferris!!! I want to see that movie now!!!

    1. Can I call you Rebecca?? I never know if you prefer Rebecca-faith or R.F. This is one of those things I’d know better if pesky distance wasn’t in our hanging out way!

  34. This is a fun edition. I need to work on eating until I’m 80 percent full it’s so hard though because food is so good. I bet you have listened to Frozen a lot more than you have watched it, I know that I have. There for a while we were watching it daily in our house. It’s a great movie.
