Fitness and Weight Loss Tips for Working Moms

Control your “hot zones”

One of the biggest reasons you may be struggling with losing weight is that you spend too much time in your “hot zones.” These are the moments when you feel overwhelmed, stressed out, and unprepared. At such a time, you just want to survive the moment, and you avoid creating a long term goal. Therefore, it’s almost impossible to make any meaningful change when you spend most of your time in “hot zones.”

As a working mom, you not only deal with “hot zones” at home, but you also have to deal with all the “fires” at work that need to be put out too, and this can be a lot to deal with.

Examples of common “hot zones”

  • Ordering pizza because you are late and everyone is starving.
  • You want to start your morning exercises, but you can’t find your workout gear.
  • You feel overwhelmed because your house is a mess, and the laundry is piling up.
  • You’re always late because you don’t go to bed on time and nothing is ready before time.
  • You’re busy at your place of work, and you forget to take lunch, so you grab a few things out of the vending machine. But by the time you get home, you’re already hungry and start snacking again.

As a working mom, your life is a big “hot zone,” but when you start controlling those “hot zones,” your life will become healthier.

You must exercise your body

Before anything else, you should ask yourself whether exercise is a top priority in your life. While you may think that exercising is a priority because it’s on your mind – should is different than a must. Keep in mind that when something isn’t a priority, you can always find an excuse not to do it. However, fitness must be a priority because if you can’t take care of yourself, will you be able to take care of your family?

If you don’t have the time for a morning run, you can ditch the ride and commute to work. When the weather is good, turn your commute into an active one – bike to work or walk your kids to school. Alternatively, when your kids go for soccer practice, music or ballet lessons, use that time when your kids are in class to get your fitness in. If you have an infant, as soon as they nap, leave them with dad and go for a run or to the gym.

The gym is a good place to work off stress, lose weight, and lead a healthier lifestyle. The energetic classes, heavyweights, and large machines can get you in shape quickly and help you maintain your health. However, just like with any other activity, gyms have some potential risks involved. And when you sign up for a gym membership, you will most likely be required to sign a liability waiver to protect the gym. But not to worry, even when you sign the waiver, you’re not on your own. In case you get injured, ensure you know what to ask before hiring a personal injury lawyer. A qualified attorney will know some exceptions to the liability waiver and help you get compensation.

Aside from working out at the gym, you can also try other activities that involve less movement, such as yoga, Pilates, and even meditation. These activities are beneficial when you’re tired from doing household chores and taking care of the kids, which also gives you a chance to unwind. You can practice them anytime of the day, and even compress a 30-minute meditation session in between your busy tasks.

Furthermore, playing physical games with your children outdoors is a good form of exercise while spending quality time with them. If you have an outdoor space at home, why not invite your children as your workout buddies every weekend?

Choose the right diet

Eating a well-balanced diet will help you get the nutrients and calories you need to fuel daily activities, including regular exercise. However, when it comes to choosing the foods to eat when exercising, it’s not as simple as choosing greens over doughnuts. You will also need to eat the right type of food and at the right time.

Moreover, people become more susceptible to making impulsive decisions in their “hot zones.” Say, you can’t start your workout because you can’t find your workout gear, then an easier and more vulnerable decision to make is to sit or lie down and watch TV, instead of actually finding your exercise clothes to start working out.

Once you’ve learned to control it, you’ll have to create the next step that opposes the consequences of giving in to them. In terms of eating and nutrition, curate a balanced diet that you’ll strictly follow instead of satisfying your unhealthy cravings. Ideally, an eating pattern can guide you through better nutrition.

To guide your diet to a good path, you can try intermittent fasting a tried-and-tested eating approach composed of cycles of eating and fasting. You’re not required to eat specific kinds of food, but the intervals between meals matter. As a popular health trend today, The 5 Stages of Intermittent Fasting by Paige Jarreau summarized what intermittent fasting is all about, and enumerated tips and advice to succeed in this eating approach.

Busy Moms Need to Keep Fit

When you have a full-time job, and you still have to take care of your kids, you won’t feel like exercising or have the time to look after yourself. Instead, most of your free time will involve improving your sleep. However, when you manage your “hot zones,” exercise your body, and choose the right diet, you’ll keep fit and lead a healthier lifestyle.
