Let’s Get Romantical.

Obviously, I know that romantical isn’t a real word but for the sake of this blog post, it is!

I’m paired this week with Jhanis from The Vanilla Housewife and we’re doing LOVE and romance and Valentine’s Day themed questions. We sent our questions via Facebook messenger and it just reminded me of when I was afraid to friend Jhanis on Facebook. For all my talk and my friend collecting and my love of connections, I am petrified of friending people on Facebook. It’s so weird! So if you’re hovering over the friend request button ever but waiting for me to make the move, just hit the button. Please. I’m a wuss! I’m not a wuss about answering love questions, though. I’m delighted about this pair up.

Valentine's Day

The Vanilla Housewife blog is as funny as it says it is, but even better. Her recipes are honestly mouth-watering, a little familiar, but also a lot exotic. Somehow you can be all of the above. Jhanis is also hilarious and will write incredible posts about the more humorous sides of parenting and marriage. You’ll love this third world blogging mama! Trust me.

Valentine's Day

You can read Jhanis’ answers to my questions HERE. And here are my answers to her LOVE questions:

1. What is your favorite Valentine’s day memory?

Definitely, definitely when I was 13 and had bronchitis and missed a skiing trip with my boyfriend and ate Lucky Charms for the heart-shaped marshmallows and thought I was going to die from how my stomach felt after that. Oh wait.. Umm.. favorite? Oh sheesh. That’s loaded. I’m going to steal some photos from my sister’s blog right now because she wrote recently about how heartily we celebrated Valentine’s Day together as kids. (I’m the one hidden by the giant heart in the photo):

And the one on the right here:

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

For the first Valentine’s Day after my father passed away, my sister was very sick that day. It was probably the lowest of the low and the worst Valentine’s Day in existence, so all I can really say is that the rest of them have been on the up and up (except for Bronchitis Day) and they all blur together into a wonderful mix of chocolates, flowers, and cards for me.

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

Some memories stand out. The year in high school that I got THREE carnation-grams sent to my homeroom desk. One was from my sister and two were from gay friends who had no romantic interest in me at all, but I still adored it..

I loved being single on Valentine’s Day because it was the mystery of it, and the “What If”? I also loved being with a boyfriend or husband on Valentine’s Day too, and Cassidy has always been surprising with fun gifts.

And basically any Valentine’s Day that had See’s Candies or other fine chocolates was a-ok by me.

2. Complete this sentence: Not many people know it but my husband is really good at ________.

Well I cheated and asked Scarlet first and she said he’s really good at making grilled cheese. I will say that he’s a good problem solver, almost in a clinical or just logical way. He can be clear-headed enough to find solutions for things that seem way out of my league – tough emotions and controversies and conversations. I go thinking off the deep end in my head.

Here he is – problem solving!

3. What is your favorite way of spending time with him?

Definitely road-tripping. It’s true that anxiety and time and money and kids have sometimes conspired against us (usually anxiety’s the ring-leader) but I’ll always remember how we met – a long road with great music and great adventures. I actually have a dream about driving to Yellowstone in the next few years. I’m going to save up money because it’s important.

And we did a 2.5 week, 3000+ mile road trip together and I loved every second of it, even that blizzard over the Rockies!

4. Is there anything that you are still embarrassed of doing in front of your husband?

Sometimes I’m embarrassed to ask for help when I really, really need it. Maybe I’m afraid to show weakness or I’m afraid he won’t help me, when of course as I have proven with question #2, he would help and he would problem solve.

5. The strangest gift your husband has ever brought you.

I’m not sure anything’s ever been strange, because I AM strange. So when he sent me a carton of CranCherry juice and a box of Lucky Charms one birthday in which he couldn’t be with me, well that’s because I loved CranCherry juice and Lucky Charms! I put that in past tense because Lucky Charms were always my favorite but they’re full of poison and my Spidey sense can taste it. So moving on, nothing has ever been strange – just appreciated! Especially the towel warmer I still need to use!

6. If he could choose one thing of yours to get rid of, what do you think would he choose? And if you could choose one thing of his’ to get rid of, what would you choose?

Oh dear – I don’t know! Maybe all of my books in the basement that I never read, and they have suffered damage, but I can’t seem to give them up yet. As for what I’d choose of his? Probably his car! I fear it’s aging. I wish I could buy him a new one.

Or a wonderful, magical bicycle.

7. How much did your husband spend on your first date?

Maybe he’ll see this and chime in! Our first date was technically Friendly’s in Holyoke, MA, way before I ever knew/thought I’d live in western MA. So it was probably the cost of a Friendly’s breakfast. We did go out to dinner that night or the next to a place in Shelburne Falls that is no longer there! It was called Tusk N’ Rattle and I know we ordered a lot of appetizers.

I have a picture (or 70) from that night!

8. You’ve gone to the 7-11 to pick up milk. On a whim, you decide to get your husband a little surprise treat. What is it?

I really wanted to make a western Mass joke that I’d NEVER pick up milk from 7-11. I’d have it delivered straight from an organic, grass-fed cow. Oh wait, I did make the joke. Ok so really and yes, I have picked up milk from 7-11 before. I’d look for sour patch kids, gummy bears (Haribo only) or Good n’ Plenty. If it was something to share, I’d pick up a pint of Ben & Jerry’s.

9. What is the oddest location you’ve ever shared a kiss?

Our first kiss was on a beach in The Hamptons at 3:00am, after getting terribly lost going from JFK Airport to New England.

10. My husband may be the world’s best ______, but he may also be the world’s worst ________.

My husband may be the world’s best grilled-cheese maker, waffle-baker, heart-taker, leaf-raker, Doctor Who faker (as in, pretending he’s Doctor Who but I like that it rhymed) but he may also be the world’s worst sleeper. He’s such a light sleeper!

  1. I am reading this and of course finding all the ways we are in common as usual, especially with the best kiss being at Long Beach with Kevin on first date (OK not the Hamptons, but a beach only about 1 hour away still on Long Island) and my girls swear Kevin makes the best grilled cheese, too πŸ™‚

    1. Sometimes I make grilled cheese when he’s not around, and I don’t think it’s as good! And I’ve had his grilled cheese. It’s incredible.

  2. Ah, a first date at Friendly’s – that made me smile. Ours was to the movies. I’ve never gone on a true road trip with Matt (without kids), but I’d love to someday. From the top of California to the bottom, stopping whenever we wanted.

    1. That sounds like a dream. My sister and her husband are doing something slightly similar. They are starting at the bottom in San Diego but I don’t think they’re going more north than San Francisco. It still sounds like heaven.

  3. First kiss with your father: on a back porch at a family’s house and their name was “the Sunshines”. True.

  4. You had me at Cassidy’s grilled cheese. You still have me. Oh, this is where I comment! Wait, what was this about? Sorry, Post Traumatic Grilled Cheese Distraction. Medium cheddar. I wish you would have shared the floppy-eared Doberman part of your first date. That was absolutely awesome, Tamara! All kidding aside you know I always love your Q & A’s and this one was wonderful as always πŸ™‚

    1. I know all about Post Traumatic Grilled Cheese Distraction! Wait..where was I?
Well when you come here to meet Han Solo, you can also have grilled cheese. Sound good?

  5. I love that childhood Valentine’s Day picture with all of you in red. So festive!

Problem solving is a great trait. Making a good grilled cheese sandwich is pretty important, too.

Now I want to go on an epic road trip – with great music, a lot of snacks, and my family. That sounds like bliss.

    1. Maybe that road trip should be up to New England in October! That’s a good ride. and there are cookies at your destination. And grilled cheese, which by the way, Cassidy was making when we were in Orlando.

  6. This is a great theme swap! I love the questions that Jhanis asked and I am glad that Cassidy still surprises you! Also, being the best grilled cheese maker is quite the feat indeed!

  7. Love, love, love it and romantical is definitely a word in my book! LOL! Haha…I made some kickin’ cheese toasties the other night, yummy! You two are such a great couple! I too have anxieties about friending people of facebook, I often talk myself out of it! Every now and again I will surprise my hubby with a 3 Muskateers bar or a Milky Way. πŸ™‚ Road trips are so amazing! I definitely wish we could take more of them! Have a great weekend, my friend!

    1. You should take your road trip to Salem Massachusetts!
And while you’re on your way there, stop here and make me some cheese Toastie’s! see how I made it about me?
      Just kidding!

  8. This was a lot of fun to read! Jhanis asked really cool questions. Great pictures too, Tamara. Thank You for the smiles this love blog gave me, and may your towel warmer never let you down on these cold winter days.

    1. I haven’t even used the towel warmer yet! I have to do it while it will still matter! Cassidy knows that I hate showering in the winter. I love showering, but getting out of the shower is traumatic.

  9. What great questions! I had the chicken pox one Valentine’s Day, and I was so upset that I had to miss the class party that year. But my grandparents sent me a big plastic heart filled with M&M’s! That helped. It’s funny that I don’t remember what the best Valentine’s Day was.

Okay, so here’s the plan. You know we love road trips, too, so let’s drive to Yellowstone at the same time (you’ll have to start early since you live farther east) and then at each tourist site, we’ll run into each other and say, “Didn’t we just see you?” and “Are you stalking us?” And eventually we’ll just hook up and have dinner together when we get to Yellowstone! (It was funny how we actually did see the same families on the road with us during our drive to Yellowstone!)

    1. Ha!! We should definitely do that. Should we get an RV?
I have a funny Valentine’s memory from my first college boyfriend. I had the flu on Valentine’s Day, true story. And he brought me a 3 pound bag of M&Ms and a batch of cookies from his mom. I couldn’t look at them for weeks, but it was the thought that counted.

  10. I’m strange too! πŸ˜‰ Sam gave me a DIY goat cheese kit for a present last year (of course, right before I had to go off dairy). I guess most people would find that strange but I thought it was so cool!
Haha, loved that 7-11 milk joke.

    1. Not strange at all! My brother got a cheese making kit last Christmas. He actually works as a cheese specialist, so by now he may be making his very own gourmet cheese!

  11. Romantical is definitely a word in my book and now I want some grilled cheese! Loved the swap and the part when you were talking about Facebook friending had me giggling because that’s exactly how I feel/felt. I can’t remember who made “pushed” the button when it comes to us friending each other on FB but I remember talking about it with Frank and mentioning you specifically. Frank threatened to do it for me because I am a wuss when it comes to that too.

    1. That’s funny! If we were both scared, I wonder which one of us did it first! I feel like I remember doing it, but maybe I just remember accepting it!

  12. I love this swap! I would love to take a road trip with my husband. Besides being uncomfortable because I have a bruised tailbone, I love to be alone with him. I would love to drive up the West Coast from California to Washington. My weirdest gift from my husband was a car seat massager. It was nice and practical and I was pregnant, but I wanted something a little more romantic.

    1. Like maybe a massage from him?
I think in any direction, a road trip would be wonderful. I would always love to go west from here, and South is warmer, and North is so exciting! Going east would just lead us to Boston and then the ocean! Although Cape Cod is there and that’s pretty magnificent.

  13. I think I am going to start using the word romantical. It seems like a perfect word. And I think I am going to ask for a towel warmer for Valentine’s Day this year. I didn’t know such a thing existed and right now it feels like a necessity!!

    1. It really is! He gave it to me from Santa and there was a note about how I hate to shower in the winter. I like the showering part, but I find that getting out of the shower is traumatic.
With so much snow coming our way this weekend, I’m hoping to get it set up and working.

  14. I can’t remember if it was I who friended you on FB or if it was you! I’m scared of friending people on FB too so I usually wait until someone sends me a friend request! LOL Friended, friending. Ha! FB is revolutionizing our vocabulary! Thank you for swapping with me! Love your answers and love getting to know you a bit more each time. Love the photo of your family in the kitchen! And the poster too! πŸ™‚

    1. I think it was me because I remember being nervous, and you’re totally on a different time zone but it didn’t take you terribly long to accept. Whew!
What a great swap – I really loved your questions and they seem to be popular with my friends too because I keep being told they were great!
      Can’t wait to read yours!!

  15. These were great questions and answers. I’m going to propose a new segment for your blog: Problem Solving with Cassidy. Where he solves any large or small problems – we can throw things like the issues in the Middle East and shiet and really challenge his skizzles! Funny moment: As I was writing the statement above my brain completely forgot Cassidy’s name and then it came to me looking at his photo above LOL I’m a visual thinker I guess. Funny how so many of us know so many things about him but he has no clue who we are! Ha! Lucky Charms are awesome and now I must buy a box nom nom nom. The “charms” are luckily delicious! Happy Friday love!!! -Iva

    1. ha! I’ll ask him. Usually he says yes. He really could run the world. Me too, but my imagination often involves building a garage at the end of our driveway and building an enclosed slide from our deck down the long, long driveway into the garage so we just slide into the garage and into our cars and no icy driveways!
See? I pretty much live in PeeWee’s Playhouse.
I used to love Lucky Charms!

      1. Lol i have no doubt you two could. πŸ™‚ I wouldn’t like the stress involved in that though – there’s a reason our presidents gray in their 8 years! Haha you’re hilarious – slip-n-slide driveway!

        1. Oh yeah. Obama has aged about 300 years lately.
And no matter your politics, I think we can all agree that he’s had some.. oh.. just a bit.. of opposition.

          1. A bit of opposition? That poor guy gets torn – and yet we forget how the country was given to him years ago.. Look at it now, something is being done right I don’t care what team you on. Lol.

            1. I have no idea why I downplayed that! Sarcasm doesn’t always translate well.
I’m on his team. I don’t publicize it in posts, because people get too weird.

              1. Lol trust me I caught your sarcasm and responded accordingly haha I hear about how “bad” a job he’s doing all the time and I”m like “stfu you’re not running ish so you can’t say ish” – when you in that spot, come talk to me. Your’e definitely right people get weird, they’re very sensitive about politics, money, politics, and religion.

  16. This was such a sweet swap! I “Romantical” is a part of my vocabulary, so, yes, it’s a “real” word to me. πŸ™‚
Your childhood Valentine’s Day pictures= adorable!
Have you tried Three Sisters “Marshmallow Oaties” eh hem Lucky Charms? Poison free.
    XOXO

    1. So many words do become real from use, so it’s all good, I think!
We get the Mallow Oats from Target or the co-op. I think they’re made by Mom’s Brands or something like that? The marshmallows are sweetened with fruit juices so it’s a bit better.
      Now to Google Marshmallow Oaties!!!

  17. Love all the words, photos, memories here! My takeaways are: less fear/more adventures, less worrying about money/more adventures, less Lucky Charms/more Dayo Bowls and adventures. We’ve been at this a long time now. We have a responsibility to show the kids how it’s done.

    1. I always spelled it “Daiyo Bowls”. Kinda Japanese.

And was I right about what you’d get rid of mine? Those moldy books? And can you set up my towel warmer this weekend??

And yes, we do. We’re doing a good job on auto-pilot and the kids have it good, but it’s time to up the gears.

  18. Love this swap!! It would be truly fun to go on a road trip. Gaahh, someday!! My husband always gives me either Toblerone or Snickers. I don’t usually give anything, LOL. If I do, we just eat out or cook carbonara at home.

  19. you guys are simply adorable! I need to go get all romantical, I just need to say that to Matt because it’s so cute and funny, lol love it! and it is my last day as a 39 year old, I need some romantical action lol Jennifer

  20. These are great questions! I love all of you kids in red for Valentine’s Day too! I am with you on the road trip or traveling. I really enjoy travelling with my hubby. We are going on one next weekend (not very far, but not being at home qualifies as a trip for me)! Happy Weekend Tamara!

    1. Ooh, have fun!! I think not being at home is a road trip for sure. It’s a road trip when we go from here to the Cape Cod beach house, even though we’re still in the same state and the house is owned by family. Still counts!
      Happy Weekend!

  21. Aw I love this lovey dovey post! Also I love that picture of Cassidy holding up the sign that says to call if you want to vent. Like, super love that! You should make it into a tee shirt!

  22. Jhanis asked a lot of great questions. I had to stop buying Lucky Charms for my kids. They never ate the cereal. They only picked out the charms(corn syrup and food dyes aren’t a good breakfast).

    1. Same here! It’s such a kid thing. I personally like the cereal itself but my kids won’t touch it. Des will on occasion, but not Scarlet.
They still get it, but only around Christmas or birthdays.

  23. A road trip to Yellowstone sounds AwEsOmE!! I would totally go for that. With my family, I mean. Well, I guess we’d come with you if you invited us, but we could go on our own too. Whatever, not trying to make it awkward or anything!

  24. Mine and Scotty’s first kiss was also on a beach, though it was the Puget Sound and not the Hamptons. But probably equally beautiful. Also, it was 3pm and not am, but you get the point. Love how much Des looks like you after seeing that toddler pic of you above πŸ™‚ Hope you have a great weekend Tam!

  25. That is possibly one of the sweetest posts I’ve ever read, Tamara. Love the photos, too! You two are such a cute couple and so handsome/beautiful together. I have nominated you for A very Inspiring Blog Award. Stop over to see what it’s all about! Hope you don’t mind. You don’t have to play by the rules!!

    1. Thank you so much for the comment and for the blog award. I think I got another one of those this week, so I’m happy to honor them both in a post soon.

  26. AW!!! Those were such great questions from Jhanis!!! I just love reading more and more about you two!! DAMMIT when AM I GONNA READ YOUR STORY???!!!!

Awful. Just awful. *Shakes head in shame*

  27. Ugh, my guy is a light sleeper too! So just a quick question if you were a novice to Dr Who, which season would you start on? The hubs and I started watching on Netflix the other night and there are so many seasons, and I know we are years behind, but….. Which one should we start on?

    1. Start with the ninth doctor! The season started in March 2005. That’s how I did it. The first seven doctors were many many years ago, the eighth doctor was just a fox movie that was horrible, and then the ninth doctor really started what is now so popular. I’m not sure what season it would be. But I know it was late March 2005.

  28. You two are adorable! I can’t say that I’ve had memorable Valentine’s Days. I’m one of those people who doesn’t really think about the day any differently, whether I’m single or not. I do remember getting fun deliveries to my homeroom desk from friends and admirers. That was fun. πŸ™‚

  29. Fun! I am not a fan Valentine’s day, but I do love my hubby and had fun thinking about what my answers to these questions would be about him! πŸ™‚

  30. Oh my goodness… I love you guys together! SO incredibly sweet, adorable, cute. I love that he’s a fabulous grilled cheese maker/problem solver. Those are important traits!

I’m not a big fan of Vday myself, but I love that you allow your personalities to show and that you always manage to have fun together, regardless of the situation. I hope you are able to make that Yellowstone trip happen, that would be so much fun!

  31. Lucky Charms are banned in this household because the kids only eat the charms and all that’s left is bland cereal. I will tell them that you said they were poison. You and Cassidy are so awesome together!

    1. It does come in handy to have someone who fits both of those qualifications in my home!

I wish we could still send carnation grams. To blogging friends!

  32. I loved this – the love y’all have is so obvious when you talk about Cassidy!!
This may surprise you but I still like Lucky Charms – I just don’t buy them anymore:(
I’m right there with Cassidy – I’m a horrible sleeper. This past week has been really bad – I think I’m averaging less than 4 hours a night lately.

    1. I actually loved Lucky charms until last summer! I was eating it when there was nothing else to eat and it did not do the trick!

Sorry about the bad sleeping! I would think all the fitness would make for better sleeping.

  33. Cassidy is awesome and you guys are just so PERFECT together. I love love love the sign he held for you to call him. My husband would never think to do something like that and I just love it. I’d too forgotten about those horrible flower days at school – so NOT cool if you were me who only got one once πŸ™ (ugh)
The photo of you as a Little??? LOVE!

  34. Loved reading your answers Tamara, and let me say I agree 100% with the See’s candies part. I really miss those… hmm, note to self, remind my husband about this in time for V day…

The part about your first Valentine’s Day without your dear dad is so heartbreaking. You girls were so young.

    1. I hope we both get See’s candies then! Which are your favorites?

You’re right – we were so young and it was horrific. That’s why most of the holidays since have meant so much to me.

    1. So true, and what I wouldn’t give for Cran Cherry juice again. I haven’t seen it since I lived on the west coast, but I bet I just haven’t looked.

  35. Oh my dear, that last answer, seriously, a light sleeper? So is David. Don’t you hate it? Especially when you stay up late to blog, then sneak into the bedroom and he wakes up, sits up straight in bed as if he had seen a.k.a. you are a ghost? There are times when I actually get mad at David when that happens, although it is not his fault that he has got such a light sleep, right?
I am not much into Valentines, well, we are not. Sometimes I get flowers, but it’s usually another day, just because. Good on you for choosing good ol’ German Haribo teddy bears only! They are the best gummi bears. Almost 20 years ago, I even drove across town (= 1.5 hours) in Melbourne, Australia to buy those πŸ™‚

    1. I HATE it! I always feel like I’m doing something elicit. I’m such a deep sleeper that I sometimes will nod off on a couch or chair. Then when I sneak into bed and he shifts around, all annoyed, I think that it wasn’t worth it to come into bed to begin with!
Haribo only, of course! The rest taste terrible!

  36. You and Cassidy are so all American – you really should be models…just gorgeous pics. This was just a perfect #AAF – and I knew without you telling me which was you…the one that looks like Scarlet…

  37. Grilled cheese is a staple food, isn’t it? And the fact that the worst thing you can say is that Cassidy is a terrible sleeper is pretty darn good!

  38. This is beautiful Tamara! I enjoyed reading it although my heart ache reading about losing your Dad at such a young age but reading your love story, seeing your photos together gave me hope that maybe one day I will be able to fill out these questions too. Thank you!

  39. How did I get so far behind on your posts? This post just made me so happy – the love you two have for each other just shines through, and love always makes me smile!

  40. 1. “She’s So High” is playing as I comment!

    2. Road trips kind of spell out how compatible you really are.

    3. The things that we might want to get rid of that belong to the one we love is often a reminder of why we love them.

    1. The song is cosmic!
I have to agree about road trips. I think about three or four of my longest relationships started with a road trip. It was like we barely knew each other and we drove to Florida or Canada together. Living on the edge!

  41. Such sweet answers. I agree, chocolate makes any Valentine’s Day a good one. (I can’t get over how that toddler picture of you looks so much like your kids!)

  42. I loved the description of the unknown Valentine…that was fun…and then it would be your mom. No but I did have a few guys that I wasn’t official with that I would get flowers from on different Valentine’s so yeah that was a nice surprise! I have a lot of fond memories of V-day, and my husband and I went on our first date on V-day and my first set of flowers from him! πŸ™‚

  43. I have such a huge issue with asking for help when I really need it….sometimes it gets all sorts of ugly because I expect people to “know” when to help me and how to help me without conveying it at all. I’m working on it….

Cassidy is so great for you. You two are a power couple.

And you had a bf at 13?!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I had a bf at 13, I would have a mouthful of fake teeth today lol

    1. That’s funny! I had boyfriends from 11 on. I’m not gonna say it was very serious, though.

I think we have the capacity to be a power couple. When we work together. If we could just trust each other more and learn how to build a business without hating each other. That would be nice!

  44. Oh boy – thanks for reminding me I have a pint of Ben & Jerry’s in the freezer!!! I can’t believe I actually forgot about lovely frozen cookie dough. I love that little note from your hubby. I mean, what a great gift to give: venting!! Somewhere my own husband’s little muscle in his jaw started ticking at the mere thought. He’d rather give diamonds and go broke I think. LOL
Lucky Charms are my camping cereal. I have to bring a box when we go camping. if you think they are magically delicious at home, wait until you try them huddled in the chill of an early morning bonfire, with your hands around a hot mug of instant coffee. mmmmm, breakfast of champions! πŸ™‚

    1. I think I’d like to go camping with you!

At my first and only blog conference, they had big boxes of Lucky charms and that’s what I was eating at three am.

We have about seven half eaten pints in the freezer, if you can believe that. In the summer, they would all be eaten already.

  45. Oh My!! I LOVE how you celebrated Valentine’s so “heartily” as a child…that is so fun!! I try to create memories like that with my Kiddies as much as possible….great exchange guys!
