5 Tips on Keeping Pet-Friendly Homes Fresh for the Holidays:
This year we’re hosting! And that’s nice because generally when we travel, we have to bring our pets or line up pet care. This year, we will have three dogs at our Thanksgiving dinner, and our cat, Luna. We are pretty good about keeping a clean house, but everything is a bit harder this time of year. The days are colder and darker, and sometimes we just want to hunker down next to the fire and not clean! Also, there are more guests this time of year so sometimes we work so hard making sure everyone is comfortable, that maybe we neglect cat areas. This year I’m sharing five easy tips you can do today to make a fresh, pet-friendly home for the holidays.
We got our newest cat, Luna, about three months ago at our local animal shelter. It’s a large animal shelter, and super well-run, so I used to check their website every now and then to see what was there. I’d also gone to the shelter on my lunch break during the summer to play with the kittens and hold the older cats. I was never a cat person, until I was a cat person. It was a matter of meeting the right cats, to be honest. They have a way of really getting right into your heart.
Here’s how to keep your pet-friendly house fresh for the holidays:
1 – Neutralize odor on your floors and carpets. For places outside the litter box, we use ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda to neutralize odor on our floors and carpets, especially in places in which the pets hang out the most – like the bedrooms. We have a steam cleaner we use for our carpets whenever we feel the need to freshen up the rooms. I love the feeling of my feet on the rug after it’s been cleaned!
2 – Clean your pet gear. You can run pet dishes in the dishwasher or clean them with hot, soapy water. You clean their dishes the same way you do for human members of the family. Make sure your cat’s water bowl is always clean and filled with fresh drinking water. Wash your cat toys in the washing machine if possible, as well as bedding and pillows. Clean the furniture areas where the pets hang out regularly. We have our couches vacuumed weekly, and will wash kitten and dog blankets, beds, and toys periodically.
3 – Give your pet a regular bath and grooming, AND like you clean your pet beds, clean YOUR beds they sleep on too!
4 – Beware of electrical wires and cords. In this house, we do put out decorations and put up a tree, but the dogs and cat go on little chewing binges if we’re not careful.
5 -Discover a revolutionary new cat litter, like ARM & HAMMER™ Cloud ControlT™ Clumping Litter at PetSmart!
It’s found in the Cat Litter Aisle of your local PetSmart! We always believe that what happens in the litter box should stay in the litter box. And ARM & HAMMER™ Cloud Control™ Clumping Cat Litter reduces airborne dander and other nasties when you scoop. It has a hypoallergenic light scent and is 100% dust-free so you breathe easy. Let’s face it – it’s no one’s favorite chore, but with 100% dust-free ARM & HAMMER™ Cloud Control™ Clumping Cat Litter, daily litter box maintenance is a breeze. And it helps keep your home smelling fresh.
Our fresh smelling home makes for a happy home and happy cat. When we don’t have to worry about litter box odors, that means less stress on us, and more time for our relationship with Luna. And before you know it, it will be Christmas. After Christmas, we have about a day or two of breathing room, and then our eye is on the prize – New Year’s Eve! We go big for that, and then breathe for a bit more, and then it’s our annual trip to Florida. In this respect, all of our home cleaning and planning that we’re doing quite diligently is not just for the holidays. We do want a clean, pet-friendly house for the holidays, of course, but we’re also looking way beyond that. We’re looking at it as a way of life. A clean way of life. It’s great to find this product.
