It’s such a gift that she can feel emotion so strongly that it leaks out of her eyes like that. It’s such a gift that we can share life’s big and small events together, and that the large life events have such an impact on her. It took me until adulthood to feel really wide open, instead of partially closed up, and I have my children to thank for these positive changes in my life.

A few months ago, I had an incredible birthday weekend with my family. I had wanted to go to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, because I hadn’t been in about ten years and I had so many memories associated with the mountains. I had gone through there on my way to Maine when I first met Cassidy, and I went there a half dozen times in my 20’s to try to see moose and to try to get over my broken heart about my breakup with Cassidy. I never found moose and I never found much heartbreak release (LOTS of tissues used during that time), but I did find a favorite restaurant called Blueberry Muffin. I had such a pivotal experience while eating there at age 25 – watching a family with two young children – that I swore up and down that I’d one day fall in love, have a family, and take them to Blueberry Muffin. That’s what we did for my 35th birthday.

Blueberry coffee was flowing, the food was delicious and the happiness was contagious. We all four wore matching shirts and everyone smiled at us as they walked by. We had become that family – the one I had once envied. Happy. Connected. As I was digging into my scrambled eggs, my phone rang. It was my little sister, Marisa. This wasn’t so odd because it was my birthday so of course, I answered her call. “I have a present for you,” her happy voice rang out. “Present??” I teased? “I thought we agreed on no gifts this year!” And then my little sister dropped a bomb on me at the Blueberry Muffin Restaurant.

The feeling went right to my head first. Woosh! And then it leaked straight to my eyes. Happy tears! I was so excited I thought I would burst. I even shouted out to the table next to mine, “My sister is having a baby!” “Congrats to her!” They shouted out, over their delicious breakfasts. You see, it wasn’t an easy journey. It was a long one, and they wanted a baby so badly.

It’s not just the common cold, that strikes me once or twice a year these days (it used to be once every OTHER year!), but it’s about sharing incredibly special moments and occasions with loved ones. We always have Kleenex on hand for life’s big and small moments. I buy my tissues at Walgreens, because while there, I can also peruse their aisles (Mom, remember how much we loved Walgreens holiday aisles outings??) for cards, small gifts, balloons, wrapping paper and.. chocolate. Lots of it too.

I shed some happy tears watching Frances come downstairs to see her birthday party decorations! She had such a great time, and I loved putting it together for her!
Ahh! I love that! Thank you so much for sharing. And I’m eating OREOs while I read these comments.
Happy 12 years of motherhood!
Oh that day surely did deserve some happy tears. I haven’t been doing much happy tears lately but I’m hoping that changes soon. That restaurant sounds amazing and I’m glad you were able to go back with your very own family. Happy tears all the way!
I hope that changes! I bet it will. Happy tears are so coming.
Mazel tov to your sister and her husband…and to you, Aunt Tamara! My nieces and nephews are some of my favorite people.
I cried happy tears just yesterday. Gwen’s team had a HUGE win against their rivals, and she was so happy she cried. So I cried. And I had Kleenex in my purse, but I just let the tears flow.
I love that. YAY For Gwen and team!! I love that you both cried together.
I cannot live without KLEENEX! They are always in my house and in my purse! A new baby in the family is always reason to celebrate! Congratulations to your sister! Happy tears indeed 🙂
Kleenex are the best! We just stocked up on even more because both kids have colds. So Scarlet has the fancy Betsy Johnson box and Des has the other.
That’s such wonderful news!! I may have a little something in my eye…
Congratulations.
(And PS – I loved that you went back to that restaurant. Even if there were no moose.)
AW! I have something in my eye too.. quite a bit.
No moose, but man, that restaurant experience. I was bursting to tell you all when I wrote that post after my birthday, but it wasn’t time.
I was patient!
Happy tears when our eldest son announced his engagement! Happy tears reading this, happy tears watching Disney movies…I leak pretty easily 🙂
And, nothing worse than reaching for a tissue and getting a cheap imitation…Kleenex rocks 🙂
Aw! I remember reading that on your blog recently. That is BIG! I can’t even imagine the tears I would have, but I know I’d have plenty.
Cheap tissues are the pits.
Oh man. Where are my Kleenex when I need them!? Mazel tov, tante!!
Thanks!! I love the word “tante.” And I have a big box of Kleenex next to me, mainly because Des has a cold, but also reading these comments.
Congrats to her, her husband, and you! Being an aunt is so much fun.
Yes! I love it. My niece and nephew are too cute for words. It’s so nice to know I’ll be meeting a new one in March.
I cry when I’m happy, too. The happier I am – the worse it is. I also go around like a robot with no feelings during a crisis, so after everything is finally okay I usually just melt down. My mother can call me in the middle of Dick’s sporting goods to tell me my grandfather is okay and I’ll come undone.
I carry hankies. (But keep a supply of Kleenex in the car, my purse, on my nightstand, etc. for stuff… other than tears)
That sounds just like me. I think we’re very much kindred spirits with tears. And many other things.
I have Kleenex next to me right now.
Awesome news and congrats to you and your family. By the way, I love those Betsy Johnson Kleenex tissues and buy them all the time for us, because I am a sucker for the design on the box! 😉
Yes, they are cool! Scarlet took that box for her cold and Des has the one with the geometric shapes. They’re both sick!! So much for using all of these tissues for happy tears.
Oh yay! A new baby always brings tears to my eyes. 🙂 Congratulations to your sister and to you too, Auntie!! So exciting!
Thank you! It’s so exciting. I can’t wait to add the fifth grandchild to the family. Now that I’m adding it.. but my sister is!
I shed happy tears the first time that I saw the ocean at 27 years old. I also shed happy tears when I got married and when my children were born, so yes, I know those happy tears!
Since I’m from NJ, seeing the ocean happened fast, but I can imagine that the first time.. so amazing.
That was like my first moose! At 25!
This is SOOO exciting!! Huge congrats to your sister, that’s wonderful! And I love that you got this news at such a special place to you. xo
Thank you! I wanted to tell you all so badly at the time but it wasn’t my news to tell, until she gave me the green light.
Congratulations! So exciting. And I have Kleenex in every bathroom, the kitchen and my car. And my bedside. And usually it’s used for crying. I’m a weeper. And I also love the Box Tops!@
I have Kleenex right next to me today! Both kids have colds, though. I’d really rather be using them for happy tears!
Oh, this post made me so incredibly happy to read today 🙂 CONGRATULATIONS to your sister–I know it’s been an incredibly difficult journey for her so this gift is all the more sweet. And congrats to you and Cassidy on soon becoming an auntie and uncle. I loved this story and am now covered in goosebumps. XOXO
Thank you!!!!!
Well we already are an Aunt and Uncle, but each new baby is so special.
I love that you got goosebumps! I did too, writing it.
Me too! It “almost’ makes me want another one, but I think I’ll get another dog.
Congratulations to you and your sister! I remember you mentioning this to me and that is SO awesome and I bet Scarlet and Des will be so excited too! I love happy tears – bring them on!
Yes! I probably told you subtly, with permission from my sister. I remember that.
And now I get to blast it out and I’m loving it!!
The family keeps growing and I love every second of this life we have! oxooxo
Me too! It “almost’ makes me want another one, but I think I’ll get another dog.
So sweet! Congrats to your baby sis! We used a lot of Kleenex this weekend for colds. But I did watch a movie yesterday that made me cry happy tears (Rudy) but I was trying to hide that fact that it had made me tear up so I was pushing them back in with my fingertips. But Christopher busted me, “Mom I know you’re not crying…”
I was listening to the Rudy soundtrack the other day!
And.. both of my kids have colds.
We’re on the same wavelength.
Congrats to your sister and you! That definitely deserves happy tears! 🙂
Thank you! So many happy tears and things to look forward to.
Can I be completely honest about something? When my sister announced her pregnancy, I was pissed and… Dare I say it, jealous? No, I wasn’t jealous because I want to clean dirty diapers, wipe up throw up, be up at all hours of the night, etc… But I was jealous of how happy she is with her husband and how I envied that so much. I was going through a bit of a rough-patch, so I was just so angry that I couldn’t find happiness, enough happiness with someone, to potentially have a family with them. Not that I want kids, but it’s the whole concept. It’s so weird because even just 2 years ago I was like “aw hell no” to the whole marriage and family thing, but now… Well, all those damn engagement rings on FB keep smacking me in the face. I want a nice sparkler. LOL…. And I want a man to give it to me. 😉
My sister now has her baby, as I know you know… And….. I am no longer jealous – BAHHH HA HA AH HA!
I really love your completely honest confessions.
I have a feeling.. that seeing a baby would make one NOT jealous. Although maybe that Aunt/Niece bonding is just so good.. right? Like the way you’re a friend Aunt to Scarlet, and she doesn’t even know it yet! She does know about Josie, though. She’s like, “Remember that friend of yours that made a video for me, but also made a video admitting that she sh*t herself? I like her.”
Yes.
LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Scarlett… I my BEST friend niece EVER!!
Just wait until you two meet. It will be cosmic.
I’m So Happy For Marisa And Her Husband! I wish them every happiness during these exciting days of anticipating and preparing for the birth of their baby. I’m sure this very special Kleenex Moment will always be remembered.
Yes! And I’m sure I’ll be bringing boxes of Kleenex to meet that little nugget!
Congratulations to your sister and to you Aunt Tamara!! Happy tears are wonderful. I never cried when I was happy til I became a mom, something about that level of love opens them up!
I so agree. I used to say it was the day, or moment, in which I became wide open.
Awww…that’s so exciting for everyone in your family!!!That is a reason for happy tears 🙂
Thanks! It so is. And she’s my little sister and I remember her as a baby so it’s totally mind-boggling.
Awww, what a sweet post! And mom and son look soooo happy! Just precious! <3 – http://www.domesticgeekgirl.com
It’s Aunt and nephew! That’s when I took Des to visit her when he was a baby. It was a blast.
Yay! So excited for your news. Next to having my own babies, my sister having hers was so much fun. Congrats Aunt Tamara!
I so agree. I remember meeting my nephew in the hospital and then my little niece at home and it was overwhelming, but in a great way.
Aw I am so happy to hear the good news, Tamara! I’m sure your sister is so pleased and overjoyed. I remember you told me lots of your family and friends are having babies. It’s so nice to see loved ones become parents, especially for the first time.
It’s so amazing. I love this journey. And I can’t wait to meet that little nugget. So loved already.
Happy tears beat the snot out of sad tears any day of the week. Great news!
ha. Snot. I see what you did there!
How wonderful! Congratulations all around. xo
Thank you!! We’re all so happy for her.
Auntie Tamara is gonna be the bestest Auntie on the entire planet.
I sure hope so! I do have a niece and a nephew already and they’re too cute for words.
Aw, that’s so exciting for your sister and your family! My sister cried the first time she held Eve…and then Eve promptly had a loud poop!
haha! I know just the kind you mean too. Newborns have the loudest poops.
That is such a great news!! A baby is always a blessing. My mom said my sister most likely can’t and shouldn’t get pregnant because of her heart. The literal heart. That’s what the heart surgeon said. I’m not sure if that’s even gonna change in the coming years. I do hope it does and would allow her to bear a child without it being a risk for them.
I hope it changes. Or maybe she’ll have children another way.
Either way, much love to you both!
Congrats to your sister and your family! I cried when my sister found out she was pregnant, too! [client]
Thank you! That is so sweet! I was the first of the five of us kids to get pregnant, but I originally thought I’d be an Aunt first!
What a great story! Congrats to your sister. That news would make me cry happy tears too.
Thank you! It was the most wonderful news on such a great birthday.
The restaurants you go to have the best names, and congratulations to your sister!
ha! Well I take no part in choosing the restaurant names themselves, but I guess we choose great places to go.
Congratulations to your sister!! Oh dear this made me fill up with happy tears! Why are we so alike and why haven’t we met yet!!??!?!?
You’re such a wonderful storyteller 🙂
XOXO
I completely agree. Every time I read another post of yours, I think that!
Yay for happy tears and to your younger sister! So exciting!!!
Thank you!! So many happy tears.
I have Avengers kleenex in my purse. Are you crying Surprised Tears? LOL
I’m a sap – the craziest things get to me. I see something and I just… emote. When my youngest helped her older sister carry her cases of Girl Guide cookies the other night… just seeing the two of them toddle along into the house, carrying their cookies, and chattering away so excited, their blonde heads close and giggles erupting; it just struck me. How lucky they are to have one another, and that I hoped it would never change. And that I had a tiny part in that. Okay.. yeah… there I go…..
ha, no surprised tears! I have Disney Princess tissues in my purse. Are you surprised?
The Girl Guide cookies would have done me in. Heck, even the description about it does.
You had a tiny part right. Or maybe a GIGANTIC one.
well they both were born over 9 pounds, so it sure felt gigantic. And I swear I didn’t have a single cookie during the pregnancy.
Not one??? Why not???
I had gestational diabetes, so ultra strict no sugar diet. 🙁
Such great news!! I’m so happy for your family!! We have lots of Kleenex all over the house. Such an amazing and great trusted brand!! I cry at super weird moments, like when anger is too much to process or when my favorite tv show characters die (like mc dreamy!)
I definitely have the anger processing tears. So much!
Also, why did McDreamy have to die? Sob.
Congratulations to you, your sister and your whole family! You’ll all be needing plenty of Kleenex for years to come! I can’t tell you how many travel packs I’ve got..between my bags, my car, the kids rooms, and any other place prone to sneezing fits or spit-up.
I really get it! I have tissues for me, for the kids, for anything. You must have so many!
