Ahh, the holidays. One of the most wonderful times of the year, and so busy!

I think keeping a clean house is always a challenge, and even with last year’s quiet holidays, we had a newborn baby! So I can’t even remember what we did to keep a three dog, one cat, three kid household clean. I think it was probably a labor of love, with a lot of teamwork. The thing is, it’s not getting any easier around here! We’re adding a fourth kid to the household, although NOT a fourth dog, and we will be hosting several New Year’s house guests. Whoa! Even though the house will get messy again, we have deep pride in our recently renovated home, and we like it to be super spiffy BEFORE the guests arrive. And of course, after they leave we’re back to relaxing as a family of five, soon to be six. So, let’s talk about getting your house in holiday prep mode!

How to Have a Clean House for the Holidays:

1 – Deep Declutter:

Or, as I call it, declutter deeply. This is a priority. Cassidy is better at getting rid of clutter than I am, but every now and then I make a huge dent. Maybe I’m nesting but over the weekend, we did this for half of Saturday. We decluttered several pantries and closets, just by going through the inventory of what we have, figuring out what is needed for our maximum number of house guests, and then tossing (donating) the extra. It is SO liberating.

2 – Deep Clean Pet Areas:

Clean your pet’s areas. Clean cages and tanks regularly, as well as litter boxes. Scoop at least daily, and do a complete overhaul at least once a week, depending on how many cats you have. We have one cat and replace her litter once a week. We also wash the bedding of our dog beds, if it’s removable, and clean their water and food bowls in warm soapy water. You should launder pet blankets and washable toys as well. Don’t forget to give your pet a regular bath and grooming, AND like you clean your pet beds, clean YOUR beds that they sleep on too!

Plan for Food and Drinks Ahead of Time:

I know that having MORE food and drinks seems like it will be a messy affair, but planning ahead can actually create less confusion and messes. Have everyone’s favorite foods and snacks on hand (your houseguests AND your own family members, especially children) or at least some good communal choices that everyone loves. We also love to set up a coffee station so our families don’t have to wake us up to find coffee, or rummage through everything to find the creamers and sweeteners they use.

Clear Entryway, Drawers and Closet Spaces:

Sometimes guest rooms accumulate stuff from previous house guests, or even from the inhabitants of the home. It can be inevitable, as space runs out in other rooms, and your home can seem more cluttered in the winter months, with coats and hats and scarves and boots everywhere. Holiday house guests generally stay for at least a couple of days, if not more. They’ll want to take their clothes, toiletries, and gifts from their suitcases. So make sure to give them places to do so.
