Hangin’ Around.

I’ve been hangin’ around a lot lately. I’ve been stopping to catch my breath in between the crunch of end-of-summer roadtrips, vacations and house guests. I’ve been reeling from Scarlet’s first illness in ten months. Which, seriously? Is awesome. She and I both survived the entire bad winter with nary a cold. Then she succumbed to a short-lived but treacherous summer bug and while it only lasted 24 hours, it took us both a few days to catch up on sleep and health.

We watched “Rango” with our house guests the other day and I was struck by a quote from (evil) mayor, Tortoise John:

“You see them, Mr Rango? All my friends and neighbors. It’s a hard life here. Very hard. Do you know how they make it through each and everyday? They believe. They believe it’s going to be better. The believe that the water will come. They believe against all odds and evidence that tomorrow will be better than today.”

And I’m someone who believes. However, instead of working hard to prepare for or even create that better day, I often get paralyzed with crippling fear. It’s a terrible, terrible, no good, awful, dreadful trait. In some ways in my life right now, I’ve never been more afraid. However somewhere inside I also know that one day I’ll look back at all of the gifts I am fortunate enough to have, including natural talents, and just maybe I’ll be amazed at the transformation I went through to get to a better tomorrow. And things aren’t terrible or even half so for us here. Life is beautiful, but I have some demons to conquer.

There are so many ways in which I have to step up.

Hangin’ around waiting for your life to begin is a terrible notion but at least if that’s what I’ve been doing or what I’m doing temporarily, at least I’m doing it in vivid color and style. And black and white, of course.

And at least if I’m writing in this blog and taking pictures, maybe in the long run, I’m not just hangin’ around. I’m getting better, more polished and closer to making this, or something like it, a career. (I think?) I hope. I believe, Tortoise John.

However, it’s not all so bad. It can be quite fun. Hangin’ around wearing Cassidy’s shoes:

Hangin’ around on “Mommy and Daddy’s bed”. Oddly, this is where we were during today’s earthquake. The earthquake was felt pretty strongly in western Mass. Scarlet was getting whiny and we were both reading on the bed, while she was complaining a lot. A large, rumbling truck was outside. Neither of us felt the earthquake. At all.

They say that just like how your voice sounds different to others than it sounds like to you, how you look to yourself in a mirror is different than how you look to others. This is how I look in my own head.

Hangin’ around a beautiful park is much better than hangin’ around the house.

Hangin’ around with friends is much better than hangin’ around by yourself.

Hangin’ around Boston is much better than not hangin’ around Boston. The New England Aquarium is not worth a whole post like Mystic Aquarium was. It was dark, hot and crowded. But fun!

My child has never seen “Finding Nemo.” However, she heard tons of kids call the clownfish “Nemo” and it stuck.

Hangin’ around your hometown with house guests is much better than hangin’ around your hometown alone. And Cracker Barrel with three kids? Totally better than without three kids.

Lately, maybe related and maybe unrelated, I’ve been blasting Bruce Hornsby’s “Gonna Be Some Changes Made” when I’m alone in the car. Unrelated, I just really, really dig the piano in that song. It makes me feel like I could just about fly.

And related? It should make me feel like flying because something needs to. All of these pictures. All of these words. Maybe I can follow them. Maybe they can follow me. All I know is that something’s gotta change soon. I need to change things.

“Gonna be some changes, some changes made
Can′t keep on doing what I′ve been doing these days
Better figure out something, things are looking grave
Gonna be some changes, changes made” — Bruce Hornsby
