What Habits Will You Try to Instill in Your Kids? Here Are 3 Suggestions

Every parent wants to make sure that the kids have the best possible start in life, with the greatest number of positive avenues available to them. For that reason, things like selecting the right schools takes on a major significance – even (or maybe especially) in the earliest stages of life. Ultimately, though, a major part of our lives are determined by our habits – perhaps even more so than some of our early childhood experiences. When you’re selecting the perfect baby name, are you also thinking about the right habits to instill in your kid? Here are a few suggestions.

Always being honest

Sure, this is an obvious point to raise. And the vast majority of people already strive to teach their kids that truthfulness and honesty are important, and that deceit is unacceptable. All the same, there’s a difference between promoting these values in the home, and actively striving to inculcate them in your kids as habits.

Children are often tempted to lie or bend the truth, for a variety of reasons – not least of all the fear of punishment when they’ve done something naughty. It’s important that you recognize these potential cues, and guide your child onto the path of telling the truth instead.

People who are honest in life experience all sorts of profound benefits. For one thing, they manage to escape a lot of the inner turmoil, angst, and cognitive dissonance that dishonest people experience. For another thing, the ability to honestly evaluate yourself, your behavior, and your situation in life makes it much easier to effectively navigate the world and address any problems you may be experiencing.

Honesty is a fundamental habit to inculcate in your kids.

Reading books, and developing an appreciation for good stories

Not every child will be a natural bookworm, but it’s always beneficial to get your child into the habit of reading books at an early age – not to mention helping them to develop an appreciation for good stories, as well.

People who develop reading habits early in life are more likely to read throughout their lives – and it’s impossible to understate how much profound knowledge, and how many great tales, are to be found in books.

Stories – whether they come from books, or from films, are also profoundly important. As human beings, we all shape and interpret the world around us largely in terms of narratives.

If your child can develop a habitual interest in storytelling, that’s likely to benefit them in many different dimensions of their lives.

Dealing with problems now, rather than later

If your kid’s room becomes messy, you may be tempted to give in to their pleas to tidy it up tomorrow, the day after, or next week.

All told, though, it’s a much better idea to get them into the habit of dealing with their problems (including tidying up duties) now, rather than later.

People who get into the habit of proactively addressing problems in their early stages can often forestall major disasters, simply by responding in a timely manner. On the other hand, procrastination can often cause serious troubles down the line.
