He’s right that I usually have to dip one, two, then three toes into the water before diving in. In this case, it was just a dab of mustard on my tongue, and soon enough I was shouting, “More heat, more heat!” while I added mustard to my spicy slaw.

Soon enough, we were messy in the kitchen – Cassidy at the helm of the grill with hot dogs and brats, and me at the sidelines – mixing spicy slaw in a large mixing bowl – taste-testing all the while. I have accomplished my first roller coaster and my first public speaking speech within the last few years. Was I ready for Colman’s Mustard? It turns out that I was! Colman’s Mustard is HOT. It’s not throat hot, but it’s nose hot. It’s sinus-clearing hot. That means it’s no mere condiment.
You don’t need a lot. The dry and prepared mustards are used in recipes to bring out flavor and heat. Add a pinch here and a sprinkle there. Add a dab here and a teaspoon-full there. No matter how you use it, it creates next-level food.

The thing is, slaw doesn’t usually have heat, does it? When you make it yourself, you make it next level. For me that means local vegetables, high-quality ingredients, and a Hot Mess remix with Colman’s Mustard. We’re all a hot mess sometimes!
Ingredients
- 8 hot dogs or bratwursts
- 8 hot dog buns
- 1 tbsp. Colman's Mustard
- ⅓ cup mayo
- 1 tbsp. pickle juice
- 3-4 tbsp. white wine vinegar
- 1 tbsp. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. pepper
- 3 cups red cabbage, chopped thin
- 2 cups green cabbage, chopped thin
- 1 cup broccoli stems, sliced thin
Instructions
- 1. Make the spicy slaw!
- 2. In a large bowl, mix together mayo, Colman's Mustard, pickle juice, vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper
- 3. Add in cabbages and broccoli and toss the slaw to coat thoroughly
- 4. Set aside
- 5. Grill the hot dogs
- 6. Top the hot dogs or bratwursts with spicy slaw and enjoy!

What do you think? Easy enough, right? I was surprised by how much I could tolerate the heat, and then grow quite in love with it. This is the time of year for grilling. This is the time of year for fresh produce. And this is the time of year for stepping outside your comfort zone and tackling a recipe you’ve always wanted to try. Pair this with any grilled meat, or any grilled non-meat, or anything at all. Use Colman’s Mustard for your next get-together, sit back, and watch people love on it.

Oh my your hot dogs and slaw look so colorful and yummy, too. Thinking I may just have to try this soon as we just got a new grill last weekend. We have already done burgers and steak on it. But not hot dogs. So, challenge accepted 😉
I hope you did it! I’m not good with spicy things but this is a different kind of spicy. Clears the sinuses.. ahh.
Why yes, I do believe this is a keeper. Pinned! I’ve got to keep the fun summer foods rolling, so this will work very nicely! Thanks for sharing your recipe!
And now that heat is rolling back in, I’m going to keep sharing!
All Texans love a good slaw recipe! Thanks, Tamara.
I agree! 🙂

I went to Texas twice – does that count?
I love that bright yellow apron Tamara. I’ve had Colman’s Mustard and I am a fan, spicy mustard is one of my favorite condiments.
Thanks! It’s always nice to wear the yellow apron!
I’m loving your food posts! The spicy slaw sounds delicious 🙂
Thank you! I’ve grown to love doing them!
I really like the types of different mustards. I like Spicy Brown, Dijon, and Yellow and I like many different mustard brands. But I have never tried Colman’s. I’ve seen it and have been very curious about it. I will have to give it a try.
Yum! We eat a lot of slaw in our house in the summer – definitely trying this recipe!
YESSSS!! These look delicious!! This is totally my kind of dog. 🙂
XO
Me too! I made myself hungry again by going back to this blog post.
