Flu Shot Superheroes

When I was in high school, I locked the keys in my car with the engine running in the school parking lot.

Not only that, but I had parked terribly that day, and my little Toyota Tercel (Helga the Magic Lesbian – long story) was sprawled out across two or even three parking spots. With the keys in the ignition, the engine running, and the doors locked. I didn’t really want to draw attention to this debacle, so I discreetly called my mom from the school office and asked her to please come save me. We happened to have a fire drill, of all times, when she pulled up in her giant bright red GMC truck, unlocked my car, stepped in, and parked it like a human being. “Hey, Tammy! Isn’t that your mom having to save your a**?”

Indeed, it was. And since then I’ve always been entirely conscious of not doing such a thing again. Until Saturday morning.

On Saturday morning the kids had flu shots, followed by a superhero birthday party for a friend. So naturally, we went to the flu shots with Scarlet in her full Supergirl costume. Des was darn cute in his Batman t-shirt, jeans and flippy hair.

Whether or not anyone was nervous for flu shots, including me, remained to be seen because it was all about battles over rain jackets and shoes, and birthday cards, and plans, and a little bit of excitement over having a long weekend together.

We were seen instantly into the office and into the examining room, where temperatures were taken and paperwork was filled out. Suddenly a terrible smell hit the air. And this nurse must smell dirty diapers every hour of every day of her life, but I swear I saw her hold her breath when she gave Des his shot. He never even saw it coming, and he cried for a second and was then fine. Scarlet saw his pain and got scared for a second, but she didn’t see it coming either until it was already over.

We went out in the pouring rain to the car, where I did a very dramatic diaper change in the back of the minivan. I must have hit the remote starter on the keys, because the engine was suddenly on, so I hit the button again to turn it off. Then I strapped Des into his carseat, threw my purse and phone into the front seat, fielded a million questions from Scarlet about going back in and getting her a better “I got a shot” sticker, strapped her into her seat tightly, and closed both sliding doors.

Only. I was standing out in the rain. With my diaper bag. I fumbled everywhere for my keys. I couldn’t find them. I went around to Des’ side and saw them laying under his carseat. Every door of the van was locked. I tried the backdoor. Locked.

I called to Scarlet through the window and told her what happened. I told her I needed very badly for her to unbuckle her carseat and open the front car door for me. She was panicked and upset, and she has such small hands, and she just couldn’t press the button down to release the straps. She was crying. Des, however, thought the whole thing was a game and was laughing and playing peek-a-boo at me, while I stood in the pouring rain and cupped my hands to look into the car windows and shout commands at the kids. Did I mention that my purse and phone were also locked in the car with the kids?

I had to leave the car to run into the doctors’ office to call Cassidy. I could still see the car from the window.

superheroes

Cassidy: “Hello?”

Me: “I need you to come here immediately. I locked both kids in the car with the keys. Scarlet can’t unbuckle herself to help me. I’ll keep trying to get her to do it. Come here immediately, please!”

Cassidy: “I have.. shaving cream all over my face. How will I know if Scarlet unlocks the door? I’ll just come right now!”

So I went outside to wait, and the rain got harder. I rifled through the diaper bag and found an unopened poncho from our Disney World trip. I put it on. I sat against the hood of the car, while Scarlet cried a little, and I felt like an idiot. People kept coming and going and just giving me curious looks. Eventually, a kind woman stopped and asked if I needed help and I told her what had happened, and she sympathized. At that moment, I saw Cassidy pull into the parking lot and let her know and she was relieved my superhero had come to rescue me. He unlocked the car from his car, with the spare keys, made sure I was ok, and then drove home. I could see that he really did have shaving cream all over his face and he had driven like that.

And then we went to the birthday party, now an hour late, and I told everyone my ridiculous story.

I swear I still feel the chill from standing in the rain, looking in at my kids, and not being able to get to them. Luckily, it wasn’t hot out, help came quickly, and I can now laugh about it. I have reached that point where I know that it’s funny.

Just your everyday superhero in a rainy parking lot. With shaving cream. You never know when you’ll need one.

This song always made me cry in my old favorite movie:

  1. Aww, Cassidy really is a superhero or at the very least a knight in shining armor. If it makes you feel better, I am totally still your twin and could have done this and the year is still young so anything is indeed possible. I have totally lost my car keys more then I care to admit so locking them in the car with the kids really wouldn’t be a stretch. Hugs to you and just glad this had a happy ending.

    1. I keep thinking about what would’ve happened if Cassidy hadn’t picked up the phone. What would I have done? In the summer, it would’ve been a call to the police or breaking a window!

  2. I kind of wish you had a picture of Cassidy with shaving cream all over his face saving you and the kids. But I suppose the camera may have been locked in the car at the time? 🙂 At least you weren’t in the middle of nowhere. It really sucks that you had to be in the pouring rain though. Booooo

    1. Yeah, I didn’t have my camera with me! And maybe it would’ve been too mean. It was really quite a sight! I’m sure a lot of people were amused by us on Saturday.

  3. Aw, dude, that’s such an awful situation. But, but, but. I’m glad the car wasn’t hot, that Cassidy picked up when you called, that he wasted no time in rescuing you, that you have a spare car key, and everyone was alright, albeit wet (you). xo

  4. Oh brutal, the rain, the diaper, flu shots! Where are the shaving cream pictures? Sounds like you definitely had superhero mojo with you on this day.Don’t beat yourself up over this, I slammed my toddlers hand in the door once and have driven around multiple times without securing kids into their seats. I thought I had, but lo and behold when I went to get them out I realized they were not locked in. Serious duh moment there!

    1. I didn’t have my camera with me, but it probably would’ve been locked in the car too!
Right before Des was born, Scarlet got her hand caught in the sliding minivan door. See how I hate this minivan?
It was just very bruised and made a good blog post story, but it still breaks my heart.

  5. Oh that is awful! I feel for you. At least it wasn’t hot out. But I am sorry you had to sit there in the pouring rain…I would have done that exact same thing. I have never locked my keys in the door like that, but I have run out of gas and Mike had to come bail me.

    1. I’m so surprised I’ve never run out of gas! I always have the intention to always keep the gas tank over half filled, and yet I run it into fumes each week.

  6. That is one of the worst feelings in the world! When I locked my kids in the car (ages 3 and 6 months), I called the police who came and jimmied the lock open like a car thief would. I’m so glad that Cassidy was able to come help you, shaving cream and all.

  7. Oh Tamara! How stressful! So glad that the story had a happy ending. Not sure what I love more- the fact that the kids were in superhero costumes through this all or that Cassidy drove with shaving cream on his face. What an awesome hubby/dad he is!

  8. I’m glad the story has a happy ending and kudos to Cassidy for being the hero of the day. I’ve never locked myself out of the car but my mother has and she had no spare key. So she had to have her car towed to the car dealership so they can unlock it and give her new keys. Fun time.

    1. Oh no! That could not have been fun. I’m usually way too neurotic to do something like this. I was really out of my element from Des’ diaper!

  9. Now you are in the awesome mom club! I am a gold club member! I will tell you my multiple locking my kids in the car stories someday! Sorry you had such a rotten Saturday :(. Hope the rest of your weekend got increasingly better!

    1. I can’t believe you have multiple stories about this! Please do share soon. And the rest of the day was quite wonderful. Sunday was quite wonderful. Today is a little gloomy! I’m thinking of taking Des out for coffee and donuts. Donuts only for him.

  10. This has got to be written down for your memoir. I’ve luckily never locked my keys in the car but hubby has thankfully without the kids in it. I’m still picturing Cassidy driving there with shaving cream all over his face to the rescue. He’s such an amazing husband and dad. BTW so is your mom too. I think mine might have left me to stew for a while before she came to help. 🙂

As for the flu shots, I got mine on Wednesday but the kids have yet to receive theirs. We do it every year and last year Madison was such a trooper. She didn’t even blink an eye. Kyle the 13yr old actually was the one who was scared to get it lol. I’m loving supergirl but where is mini batman? 🙂

    1. Sadly I have no photos of him from the day! Too much rain and trauma.
Scarlet is usually better about shots. I wonder why she was upset this time. I had mine already and I was brave!

  11. Aw sweeheart. I used to lock my keys in the car all the time because I would automatically toss them in my purse, but then decide to not take my purse. I haven’t done it in a long while. I learned my lesson, but that doesn’t mean I don’t still thinking about it every time I get out. I’m glad you are all ok and the kids go to their party. Go Superwoman!

  12. Oh no, I’m so glad everything worked out in the end. I’d have been panicking.

LOVE the Superman dress. Natalie has a Wonder Woman dress she likes to wear. She wore it to the park not too long ago.

    1. That sounds like an awesome dress! As an adult, I liked to wear my Supergirl costume when it wasn’t even Halloween. Ahh, to be in your 20s.
It’s funny because I write about my anxiety a lot, but I had none of it during this. I really am okay in a crisis.

  13. I can’t imagine how that felt….and it was raining – hard! 🙁 I’m glad Cassidy was able to get to you all quickly enough. 😀

    1. Me too, thank you! When I think of what could’ve happened, I know it all would’ve been okay, but it probably would’ve been even more embarrassing and involved police.

  14. Oh man… that is a DAY. I am terrified of locking my kids inside the car, but I think (???) that my key fob won’t let me. I tried to lock the door manually once while my keys were inside and it started making a crazy loud beeping sound and would not lock. So… maybe it’s a good thing that my car is smarter than me?!

    1. It’s a very good thing! I’ve heard from a few people that their car has some sort of system in place in which that can’t happen. Ours is an old and cranky van!

  15. Oh man… what a mess!!! And yet- you handled it beautifully!!! Thank GOD Cassidy was available, albeit with shaving cream!!! I love this story, because it is just such a reflection of a day of a MOM!!!!

I hope you were able to salvage the day- it sure seems like you did. 🙂 Good job MAMA!!!

    1. Thank you, my dear! It actually turned out to be a pretty incredible day. We went to the birthday party, a little late, but we still got to do some great things. And the rest of the day is a story for Wednesday!

  16. Oh wow… what a story. My husband did this a couple years ago… he was in the WalMart parking lot and joked later that he will be one of the next “people of WalMart”. He coached my oldest daughter to get out of her car seat to unlock the door… it said it was at least an hour.

So glad it all worked out. What does Scarlet think of the whole event now?

    Wishing you a lovely day.
    xoxo

    1. Oh dear! I can’t imagine anything that anyone in your family could do would land you on that website!
Scarlet is already completely over it because after the incident, she had a fun birthday party, and then lots of other fun weekend things. I think I’m pretty over it too, because we were able to salvage that day

  17. hehe. I remember the first day my friend drove her red Nissan Sentra to school after getting her license. After being parked all day, she put the car in “drive” instead of reverse, and drove the car right up onto the parking block cement thing. Football players had to lift the car up to get it off. hahahhaa!!

  18. I absolutely cannot believe he drove with the shaving cream all over his face. That is one amazing superhero!!!! I love this story. It made me laugh, which I can always use more of. This is the kind of thing that would have ended very badly for me, because my husband is always traveling… hence, no back-up. Seriously though, in hindsight, hilarious.

    1. What’s really funny is that my husband rarely answers the phone. And since my cell phone was locked in the car, it was an unknown number. And the fact that he was about 20 seconds away from being in the shower. I am just so glad it happened the way it did!

  19. Oh my gosh!!! I can just imagine your panic and frustration. My son locked himself in the car one time but it was summer in Arizona, and he turned the a/c off, so I was FREAKING out. Had to have the fire dept come and get him out. Sounds like you had quite the eventful day! Cassidy is such a good guy, it’s those moments like you had in that parking lot when he shows up with shaving cream still on his face that you remember what a good man you have. I love those moments!

  20. Oh no!!! That sounds awful. Luckily , Cassidy came quickly and it wan’t hot outside.
I locked my keys inside my car once while out shopping with my mom and kids. After paying for Onstar for six years, I was finally able to use the service. I just had to call the toll free number and a minute later my doors were unlocked.

  21. I’m so worried I am going to do that one day, and that it WILL be a hot day and Sam won’t be able to come rescue me (like he did when I locked myself out of my house with Eve sleeping inside). The image of the story does sound quite comical, though I’m sure you thought it was anything by funny at the time! (Glad, though, you can see the humor in it now.)

    1. Oh, it is totally funny. Had it been summer, it might’ve been very different. I could see myself charging the car window with a rock or a fire extinguisher or something to break it!

  22. So sorry this happened to you but believe it or not I think it has happened to all of us at some point or another of parenthood. Adrian locked me in a bathroom once and it was just me and him at home. I had to squeeze through a teeny tiny bathroom window (bruising my sides for days) and then yell commands at him on how to open a sliding glass door to let me in. Did I mention he was only 2? I happen to have my cell phone in my pocket and was able ot call my dad to bring an extra key to my house. Motherhood is definitely not for the faint of heart!

  23. Oh Tamara, what a terrible, scary, and frustrating experience for you!!! I can so see myself doing something like this, when you’re juggling a million things in your hands along with your two little human beings. I’m so glad Cassidy was able to rescue you quickly!

    1. We got very lucky this time! I just can’t believe it had never happened to me before. I’m usually very neurotic about my keys, though.

  24. I did that once with Gabbie and the dog in the car. had to call the fire department! we too got flu shots yesterday, but it was not as exciting as your trip!

  25. I saw this on FB the other day and couldn’t wait to read the whole story. I’m glad that it all worked out and now is a funny story – I’m sure that you weren’t laughing at the time. Hooray for Cassidy to the rescue – shaving cream and all!!

  26. This will be something Scarlet reminds you of for the rest of your life, you know. That moment when you discover your mistake – ugh, that’s the worst. Glad Cassidy was home and close by. My kids got the flu shot this weekend too, but with much less drama. But I can’t write a post about it, and you can. 🙂

    1. True that! And I needed a post like this, because I’m still juggling the blogging with the photography.
She hasn’t really brought it up again, but she still reminds me of when she got her hand caught in the sliding van door. She wasn’t even three then!

  27. Oh my gosh – I’m so sorry that happened! We’ve all been there – well, at least I have :)! Your husband is your knight in shining armor, shaving cream and all.

  28. Oy freaking vey!! I left my car running the other day for 30 minutes while I was in Payless with the kids. It’s a mom thing.

Ps. Tammy? I can’t see you as a Tammy.

  29. I’m glad everything was ok with the kids, but that was funny with Des. I could totally picture that. Good thing Cassidy could come to rescue! Do you guys have a road side service that you pay for? Those are worth their money in gold as I’ve had one all of my life. Sorry if someone else mentioned it, I didn’t read the other comments. Speaking of super heroes…how is Han doing? Yes, I know he’s not a superhero. Wow, Rocky Horror…I saw that when I was 16 years old (a LONG time ago) and it was a total blast. Good post, Tamara 🙂

  30. What an amazing knight in shining…shaving cream? 🙂 Thank goodness our spouses are right there with clear heads when we need them!! What a story. I can imagine your fright. My heartbeat would have been crazy unbearably loud in my ears!

    1. I don’t know why, because I talk so much about anxiety, but I didn’t have any! Not any extra, rather, than the normal response to such an event!

  31. Oh no….I would have been freaking out so much. I feel bad for Scarlet that she was so frightened, but can only imagine how much worse it would have been if Des had been upset too. It’s one of those moments that makes you wish for the keyless entry systems, right? Thank goodness your husband was able to come help…shaving cream and all!

  32. I read you FB post about it! I would have panicked, too. I ‘m glad everything turned out ok.

  33. Tamara, I have missed your wonderful writing! This would totally be me one day, because I move too fast for my own good. I’m so happy Cassidy was able to get to you in no time and save the day. I can only imagine the panic you (and Scarlett) must have been in. Des…so cute, what a boy! I can imagine Chunk doing the same thing thinking its a game of peekaboo and laughing. What a tale! 🙂

    1. I have missed your comments, and it is so good to see you here. I wish we could’ve met at the conference but it’s too hectic with my month!

  34. Oooh so scary and I’m so glad it ended well. I had one story where my son locked me out in the balcony in our Chinese apartment. Yikes the horror.

  35. That’s my biggest feat! Locking my kids in the car….our kids can’t unbuckle themselves either….I always start the car before I put them in…one of the perks of a minivan. So glad your superhero was able to rescue you! Isn’t mommyhood grand?

    1. It’s funny because we have a remote starter, which we love in the winter, but that’s what got me in trouble this time I think. That’s the only reason I can think of that the doors all locked.

  36. Oh no! That had to be so scary for you. It sounds like something that would happen to me. I’m glad Cassidy made it all better by rushing over.

    1. He definitely made it all better fast. Now if he hadn’t been home, I wonder what I would’ve done. I suppose we could’ve had our neighbors help but they don’t have our spare key!

  37. Superhero indeed!! I’m sorry you had to go through that, it had to be scary. Not, that anyone was going to get hurt, but us Mamas have a way of building a situation that isn’t into something else. It’s a superpower of sorts I could do without, honestly.
    Wishing you a beautiful week!
    XOXO

    1. It’s so funny because for once in my life, I did the opposite. I recognized it as small and fixable. Usually I make mountains out of mole hills!

  38. Super hero indeed! That happened to my friend once, in Florida and they had to break the window:(. It was just too hot.

  39. And that really happened. And each time it did, you had a superhero to the rescue! I can actually imagine a scene from the movies. 🙂

  40. Glad Cassidy was able to help and all was fine!! You know I was having car troubles too this weekend, also Saturday I think we’re in sync someway, somehow. My car battery completely died. I went out around 11:30AM to take my overly excited son to meet his father; my car had other plans. Thankfully we are walking distance from the school so we met him there and Mario handled the battery situation the next day. I don’t like car issues but I am grateful that Mario takes charge on those matters since I’m honestly clueless. It’s good the kids were OK and that you were at least there, even if Scarlet was a bit shaken up. These little things stay with me too but Mario is very good at shaking them off “all is fine, all will be well” he loves to say – he’s very positive even though he’s realistic. I like to shake all the emotion off at once so I experience “the world is ending” moments – that way I shake off all the nerves and release it so it doesn’t kill me internally very slowly. Lol. Have a great one love!! I’m not even looking at my Feedly I saw 200+s and said ‘Nope’ later. Lol 🙂 Talk soon -Iva

    1. 200?! Good Lord. See you at that point, they say to just mark them all as unread. As much as that is tempting sometimes, I just care about everyone and I like to see what you’re all doing! So I never really do it.

      1. Yeah most of them are foodie blogs and science stuff/news/research that comes in daily and that racks up quite a bit on me feed but with the season changing and getting used tot he temperature shift my sleep disorder is acting up so I get worn out and am more ADD than usual therefore, feeds are getting cleared, I try to hit everyone once a week but I like to stay on top of every post; I think your one of the only blogs I read consistently every week with every post.

    1. What’s really funny is that I was just on the school playground telling that story, and another parent came over and said they had heard of it happening three times this week!

  41. When my girl was 2 weeks old, I locked her in the house. I was outside with no keys, no phone, nothing. These are the stories that will make us laugh years from now but oh are they rough when they’re happening. (My husband had to be a super hero that day too!).

    1. Oh God! And that’s when you were such a new mother in general. What’s really funny is how calm I was. I seem to make mountains out of mole hills with much smaller things, but in a real crisis. I was fine.

  42. Had I seen Des and Scarlet in the doctor’s office in full costume I would have been so tickled. I think it may be time to consider that fancy keyless car system.

  43. I’m glad you’re able to laugh about it now, and that the panic of the moment is gone. Once, when my son was a wee one, we thought his car seat was secured in its base. Apparently not, and as we took a wide turn, he went topsy-turvy, carrier and all. I have never been more upset, and am now super nervous about car-seats. He was fine, didn’t even wake up from his nap. Kiddos are nice and resilient like that.
I hope this week is shaping up better and less stressful for you 🙂

  44. Wow. You know, this is always a nagging fear of mine. I am, when out with my kids, rushing and prone to mistakes like this. I’ve yet to lock them in a car, but I have come so, so, so close! I’m so glad everything was okay with you and your kids and that you can now laugh at this!

  45. Oh I know that feeling. On time when the kids were about the same as yours, my car key fall off the key ring when I was pumping gas. The fire department came to help me and ended up breaking a window. Glad that Cassidy was able to rescue you. He was a superhero too! Hope the week is getting better!

  46. What an amazing story! Well, only, it is not a story, but reality. Thank goodness for superheros, right? Bless, Cassidy (hah – I would have loved to see a pic of him with shaving cream all over the face behind the wheel driving – LOL, good on him :)) I am very glad this ended up very well and you can now laugh about it. I usually get shivers when I see children or pets in a car locked in a parking lot, especially in summer…

    1. I really wish I had had my camera to take a picture of his shaving cream “mask”. I didn’t have it and I thought he would get mad!

  47. This story is too much! I am so so so happy it worked out fairly quickly and that only one of your two kids cried. Geez! That sounds like something that would happen to me, the whole bad yet good luck thing. Bad because, well, it happened but good because you had a poncho, the kids were safe, your superhero is on an all call basis, and it was funny later. I’m cracking up that you had two superheroes in the car and yet it was shaving cream man that saved the day! Lol hilarious!

    1. And the shaving cream was his superhero mask!
I couldn’t believe I found the poncho, but I had never used it in Florida. Even in the rain! It’s just not that sexy.

  48. What an incredibly stressful situation! I swear I would do something just like that. I feel like I’m always calling Ed with emergencies and needing a little saving. I’m glad that everyone is OK and that it wasn’t hot. And I’m glad that you can see the humor in it now.

  49. At least it wasn’t the heat of summer uncomfortably close to a rabid St. Bernard like a Stephen King book.

I really would have liked to see a picture of Captain Shaving Cream and one of his rain-soaked damsel in distress. A damsel of this sort is never, ever called Tammy.

Supergirl looks like she still enjoyed the party. And you had a story to tell.

    1. It was still a fabulous day, other than these annoying 20 minutes. I did go to a party with that rainsoaked look, and ran into some…people. As for the superhero’s shaving cream mask, it was just so quick and I had no access to a camera. And I’m not that cruel! Only people named Tammy would do that.

  50. I think you need a superhero outfit now to go with how well you kept your cool during the entire episode. I can not say the same. I wish there was an app for my phone that could unlock the car.

    1. You know I actually do have a Supergirl outfit at home!
I think it’s funny because I am an anxious person a lot, but under stress like this, I am totally fine. Who knows?

  51. Awwwww, I can imagine in the moment how stressful that must have been. Glad Cassidy was able to come to your rescue (shaving cream and all). This actually happened to a friend of mine once and she told me the same thing–how incredibly panicked she was in the moment. You are human. These things happen. Everyone’s okay. You are an awesome mother 🙂 XOXO

  52. yeah for real life heroes… and I especially like them with a beard so even better still.
my hubby has a bad habit of locking the keys in the car – once while we were camping. Standing out in the dark of a campsite holding a flashlight for him while he tries to pry open a minivan door with camping knife. fun times.
so he did it twice. oye.
sometimes your hero is also the person who gets you in trouble in the first place. that’s a special person. 🙂
My daughter has the same super girl costume!

  53. Awww! Tamara, I would have been horrified. One time, I locked JR in the car. I didn’t realize that our car locked automatically after a few minutes if you left the car closed and I had the keys on the seat next to him. Thankfully, our hatchet (not so much a trunk to the station wagon) stays open so I opened that and climbed into the car to get the keys. Sigh! We should probably get the hatchet fixed again, but I was thankful we hadn’t yet when that happened. Des cracks me up. Though it wasn’t a funny situation, it reminds me of how innocent he and JR are at this age. They tend to think many things are a joke or a game. 🙂

  54. Oh my word, what a story. I’d be so panicked too, oh my goodness. You seemed to handle it quite well, thinking with your head! Glad it wasn’t the middle of summer too. The story seemed to weave itself together. The kids in superhero costumes. Your husband being the superhero. I’m just happy every body is ok!

    1. And I keep joking that the shaving cream was the superhero mask!
I was pretty clear in the head, but had it in summer, I would’ve just called 911. Well I happened to be at a doctor’s office, so there was that!

  55. I can’t believe you owned a Toyota Tercel. I drove a Topaz colored Tercel in high school too. Your opening line carried me back to the nostalgic days of my sophomore year.

You handled the situation with a calmness that I am not certain I could muster. Love the superhero costume.

  56. superman to the rescue for sure! i can sympathize. our car, for some random reason, the alarm got tripped up and we had no idea how to turn it off. the baby was in his car seat, looking on totally amused. dean and i were running amok trying to figure it out. people at the grocery store kept wondering why we couldn’t just turn the damn alarm off. it was nuts!
