I really didn’t think I was going to post during the end of the week, but my lovely friend, Live By Surprise, gave me an offer I couldn’t refuse: Ten questions about fall! Ask Away Friday is still under construction, but here I am, just the same.
I’m having trouble with eating and sleeping this week, and I can’t find my cat. There are just so many things I have to accomplish in the next.. seven days, and then I might feel an immense sense of relief on the 7th day, and on the 7th day I’ll rest. Or eat cookies. Book a trip to Maine. Buy myself gourmet chocolates online. Or flowers. Easier days are coming.
1. What are your feelings about the fall? Is it one of your favorite seasons or least favorite? Why?
It’s most definitely not my least favorite (winter is), but I think there’s something that stops it from being my favorite, no matter how glorious it is and it IS truly breathtaking. It’s the direction you go – towards darkness and cold. And yes, that gives us more chances to hunker together over a fireplace or a bowl of soup, and the new fall lineup of TV shows (I love), but sometimes it just makes me wear out. Like I’m constantly worried I’m coming down with something viral, and sometimes, I really am. It’s so steeped in memories, of course, and I’ll never forget beginning every school year of my childhood. Then there was college. And there was the fall I broke up with Cassidy, and then next one where I finally started to notice someone new. The following one found me in Yosemite, and then the giant pumpkins of Half Moon Bay and a Thanksgiving dinner, away from home. I always think about leaving California on October 3rd, and coming back the following year October 3rd – but this time with an unexpected newborn baby. Fall is funny. In my surroundings, I’m in the most amazing and comfortable place. With soup and leaves and blankets. Warm days and cold nights. And in my head, I’m also somewhere even more exciting – like a swamp in Wyoming or a beach on the Pacific coast. And I always just think, “Someday, but why not now as well?”
2. You’ve had a few weddings recently, can you share your favorite picture?
I’m still working on ones from the first wedding, and the second wedding is still 24 hours away, but I’ll share my first capture:
3. Fall now means the new Doctor Who season. Do you like to watch it in the fall or did you prefer it when the new episode was at Easter?
I like it now. It gives me something to look forward to, although usually when it’s spring and summer and we know Doctor Who is coming in the fall, it always feels like it’s eons away. And then suddenly, it’s here. Like time travel! Or magic.
4. School has started. What are you looking forward to the most for Scarlet this year?
More reading, for sure. And she will be in the Pioneer Valley’s Production of The Nutcracker as a reindeer, if you can stand that cuteness. Today I wore a dress, leggings, black boots and a pink jacket to school drop off. She looked at me and then added tights, black boots and a pink jacket to her outfit. Sadly I don’t have a photo but if one surfaces, I’ll add it post-publishing. I love watching her grow up and navigate life, while also remaining innocent and believing in magic.
5. It’s almost Halloween!!! Have you started planning the kids costumes yet? What are you all going to be?
Actually, not yet! We talk a lot about Avengers and other superheroes. I want to be Snow White again, but a much better one. A more deluxe one with makeup and an expensive dress. I also need to buy a new Supergirl costume because the other one kicked the bucket, and I need one for Tuesdays and other such random and delightful happenings.
6. It’s been almost a year since your sister Lindsay’s wedding. What is your favorite memory from that day?
I was a little tightly wound (understatement) from being cold and nervous and overwhelmed, and I just stopped and decided to let loose and have a blast. It was on the dance floor. It was “Just Like Heaven.” Someone said, “Wow, you love this song!”
7. I know you’ve been on a few moose hunts recently. I’m reasonably sure you’d plaster it everywhere and I’d have seen it by now – but I’ll ask anyway – have you found any?
Not yet. I haven’t really tried. I took Scarlet to Vermont to bond with her and we looked for HOURS, but it’s all so much by chance. There. I have big plans before 2015 ends, by the way. And, there was a bull moose in my town on Monday.
8. Do you have any Thanksgiving plans?
Well, not yet. We alternate a lot and sometimes achieve the impossible and have all six grandparents together. Sometimes just four, but that’s FOUR. Bonus points for siblings and my uncle. Last year was snowy and weird! We’ll see with this one.
9. Do you have a favorite childhood memory of the fall?
Ah, that’s harder. As much joy as I’ve had in childhood, and it’s been a lot, I’ve loved the adventures of adulthood. So.. childhood.. It would have to be one of our many Thanksgivings at home – with about 40 people coming.
10) What’s your favorite fall:
a) food (and you can’t say pumpkin stew) – Soups of all kind. I didn’t learn to love soups until recently and I’m making up for lost time. I pretty much want it daily and I’ll seek it out and make special trips for the right one.
b) animal – I mean.. I don’t have to answer this, right? Their antlers are biggest in fall!
c) movie – “The Family Man.” But when asked to list my favorite movies, of which there are many, that’s not on the list.
d) song – “Safe and Sound.” I heard it the first fall I had to shoot a wedding and I was FREAKING out.
e) color (bonus if you have pics for each one)? – Deep reds
