There are definitely some similarities to previous years, and there are definitely differences too! I don’t think I was expecting it to be so busy, so fast. Just this week, Scarlet is starting her piano lessons at a brand new time. Then tomorrow, she gets a day off. On Wednesday, she starts an in-person improv class, and on Thursday and Friday, she has her first after school job! Yes, she’s only 12 but this is a big deal as she is going to be working at her favorite place in all of our city (and maybe our world) and she will be working with children. Des will be doing two comics classes, one in person and one online. Oh, the fun! As for Rider, he is chugging along and learning to walk and talk. He will turn a year old next month and I can’t believe it. We’re all so busy, and that’s why we have some versatile and tasty staples to add to our shopping lists.
Essential Foods for Your Back to School Shopping List:
1 – Feeding America:
I wanted to start my list by talking about the importance of Feeding America. And that’s because September is Hunger Action Month, which is a time in which the Feeding America network comes together with the national public to raise awareness and inspire action. Food shouldn’t be an impossible choice, but for millions of people in America, a daily meal isn’t a choice between different dishes – it’s a choice between food and other crucial needs. Needs like medicine, childcare, electricity, and more. And you have a choice, so choose to end hunger. You can take action here for September Hunger Action Month.
2 – Veggies Made Great:
These have actually been on my radar for awhile, because they’re so good! We love Spinach Egg White Frittata and Keto Friendly! Double Chocolate Muffins. With the Spinach Egg White Frittata, the first ingredient is vegetables, and they are nearly 80% vegetables. They have 5g of protein and only 70 calories per serving. Keto Friendly! Double Chocolate Muffins have zucchini and carrots as the first two ingredients! And they are nearly 30% vegetables. They are 110 calories and are lower sugar than the leading muffin. They’re perfect for the pickiest eaters. Veggies Made Great products are low fat, low calorie, high protein, veggie rich, and make a wonderful quick snack or breakfast option. You can find them in the freezer section of your local grocer.
3 – Mighty Sesame Organic & Harissa Tahini:
The Mighty Sesame Company is passionate about all things sesame, and they’d really get along with Des, because he is too! Mighty Sesame Organic Tahini is simply one ingredient with all of that nutrition and taste! It’s ready to use – you just need to squeeze it and then you can add creamy sesame seed paste on your favorite dishes, like vegetables, salads, smoothies, hummus, wraps, and more. Mighty Sesame Harissa Tahini is whole seed tahini mixed with Harissa Spice. It is spicy, squeezable, and ready, and is a great source of protein. Plus it has 260mg of calcium in one serving. These are such versatile products, and make great Vegan replacements for mayo. Mighty Sesame Organic Tahini is gluten free, Vegan, Non-GMO, and wonderful in dressings, dips, and spreads. Mighty Sesame Harissa Tahini is also Vegan and gluten free, and I love to use it in my little breakfast rice bowls. Find out more about this company here.
4 – King Arthur Baking Company:
We love King Arthur Baking Company! It’s a small road trip from my house and we get the catalog all of the time. They are AWESOME. Seriously my mom’s dream company. So I was PSYCHED to hear about Buttermilk Pancake Mix and Confetti Pancake Mix. Both are made just by adding water! Buttermilk Pancake Mix is made with real buttermilk, sourced non-GMO. Confetti Pancake Mix is a dream! You’ll want to add this to your weekend brunch lineup, as it’s easily made by just adding water. There are colorful sprinkles with no synthetic colors or artificial ingredients, and only 5 grams of added sugar. I think Buttermilk Pancakes AND Confetti Pancakes make excellent Birthday Pancakes, and luckily, both are so easy you can use them for all occasions.
5 – Minute Rice:
Did you know that Minute Rice debuted in the 1940s?? I didn’t! An instant hit, because it was quality rice, without processing or bad chemicals, and it was quick and easy as well. We love Minute Ready to Serve cups in this household, as they are a fast and easy mealtime solution that helps you spend less time cooking, and more time enjoying life’s moments. They are ready in 90 seconds or less, and are a great choice for breakfast, lunch, snack, or dinner. I like to add hardboiled eggs, avocado, and Mighty Sesame Harissa Tahini for a really tasty meal! I love that they are lightly flavored and you can dress up the flavors of each cup as well, like with my breakfast rice bowl recipe. We have Minute Ready to Serve White Rice and Minute Ready to Serve Brown & Wild Rice, and they are perfectly portioned to provide just the right amount of carbs for all-day energy, without overeating.
