Common Health Problems for Over 50s

Unfortunately, your health becomes more of an issue as you grow older. That doesn’t mean you won’t get sick as a kid or that you will develop an illness as a senior, but it does mean your health requires more attention once you pass the age of 50. To ensure you know what to look out for, and to discover ways of preventing conditions developing, here are some of the most common health problems for over 50s.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is extremely common, affecting nearly half of the adults in the United States. The chances of having high blood pressure only increase as you get older, so it’s essential to check it regularly and find ways to manage it if yours is too high. Luckily, helping control high blood pressure doesn’t have to be too hard. With the right tools, lifestyle changes, and assistance from your doctor, you can get your blood pressure back down to a healthy level.

Obesity

Another common health concern is obesity. While this is mostly caused by people’s lifestyle choices, that doesn’t make it any harder to tackle. After all, if you’ve spent your whole life eating a certain way, it’s not easy to turn it around. That doesn’t make it impossible, though. By making better, healthier choices and finding genuinely fun ways to exercise, you can get to a healthy weight. Not only will this help you live longer, but it’ll also help you live more comfortably.

Arthritis

A painful disease that many older adults suffer from is arthritis. Arthritis covers a wide range of issues that boils down to joint pain, which is often caused by the wearing down of cartilage, which naturally happens as you age. To prevent arthritis, maintain a healthy weight, exercise frequently, and treat injuries quickly. According to Rolling Paper, 58 million Americans have some form of arthritis. There is no definitive cure, but there are ways to manage the condition, slow down its progress, and make living easier.

Mental Health Issues

Mental health issues can visit anyone at any age, including older adults. You might experience depression, anxiety, or other types of mental health problems like paranoia or an eating disorder. It’s important to remember that mental illness isn’t a failing on your part – it is an illness of the body just like any other. If you think your mental health is suffering, make sure you see a doctor or counselor as soon as possible.

Cancer

Many cancers become more common with age, including breast cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer. No one wants the dreaded diagnosis, which is why it is so important to look after your health as soon as possible. Quitting smoking, cutting down on alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy weight are great ways to reduce your cancer risk.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain can happen anywhere on the body and is caused by multiple problems. It’s especially common as you age, especially when you are at risk of more illnesses and your joints become weaker. To make sure you don’t live a life in pain, visit your doctor with any aches or pains as soon as possible. There are ways to reduce the pain, such as medications and herbal remedies, but it’s better to target the root cause as quickly as possible.
