8 Ways to Grow Closer and Healthier as a Family This Summer

This post is a partnership with One A Day® with Nature’s Medley™. I received product/compensation from OAD to write this post. All opinions, photos and tips are 100% mine.

Summer is almost here, and we're looking for ways to grow closer and healthier as a family. The new One A Day with Nature’s Medley makes it easy and delicious to take vitamins together. How are you getting your multivitamins? What do you do as a family to get healthier together in the summer? #ad #OneADay

Every now and then I get super excited for a line of products.

This one is getting me! There are so many reasons to love the New! One A Day® with Nature’s Medley™ line of multivitamins. For one, I’ve made it pretty clear that I’m all about the gummy multivitamins. Always have been, at least since they’ve existed and I’ve been old enough for them, and probably always will be. What I love about this line of multivitamins is that there’s a special formula for all four members of my family! So this becomes another fun and tasty, and important, task for us to do together. It’s the same way I worked hard to get the two dogs on the same heartworm/tick medicine schedule. It’s because there’s power in numbers! And we all have different bodies and different needs.

That’s why it’s so wonderful to each have our own formula.

We all know that summer seems to pass us by in an instant. It’s an odd time for my family because Cassidy still works full-time, I work full-time, and the kids have camp – which is longer than their school days by two whole hours. Summer passes us by if we’re not careful, and I worry if we’ve gotten enough time together. Have we had time to bond? Did we create healthy habits together? We only get 18 summers together each, before they’re both adults. Will we make the best of it?

8 Ways to Grow Closer and Healthier as a Family This Summer:

1 – Find adventure together. Go a different way home, try a new restaurant, explore a new town, or even cross state lines. We’re an adventurous family, always looking for a new BBQ place, a new place to hike, or a new meal to cook together.

2 – Fulfill at least one family member’s dream this summer. I’ve always loved moose, so Scarlet had the dream a few years ago to see moose for the first time. So we did it. In the winter, we went to a hotel in Orlando that Des had been dreaming about for years. Our dreams range from small to large, but focusing on one dream per family, or even one dream per family member, is a goal we try to achieve every summer. You never know what it might lead to.

3 – Have no-screens for an hour, half a day, day, etc. Or maybe a whole weekend! Spend that time playing outside together, gardening together, or finding adventures/fulfilling dreams. Make sure at least one meal a day together has zero screens.

4 – Meal prep together! We love to talk about where food comes from and what it does to your body.

5 – Create rituals and traditions together. Maybe it’s movie night or game night, or ice cream on Mondays since Mondays can be gloomier. Pizza Fridays, gardening Wednesdays! We have seasonal rituals and traditions that mean the WORLD.

6 – Support each other. We all have unique talents and hobbies. Scarlet runs 5Ks and Des is doing theater camp. Both are doing mad science camp. I make sure to support them in everything they do, and I also love the time we spend doing so.

7 – The family that winds down together. At the end of the day, use the wind down time to snuggle, read, talk, and be together.

8 – The family that takes vitamins together! You knew this was coming, right? New! One A Day® with Nature’s Medley™ are also the only complete multivitamins with plant-based antioxidants from one total USDA serving of fruits & vegetables.

And there are three great tasting gummy varieties: Men’s, Women’s and Kids:

The vitamins are uniquely formulated for men, women and kids, and are free of artificial flavors and sweeteners. Their colors are from natural sources. Also, according to my kids, they are extremely delicious! Raspberry was the favorite:

Cassidy and I strive to eat healthy, and we strive to get more fruits and vegetables into the kids’ diet. Life gets in the way and we have one picky eater and one not picky eater who turns into a picky eater when his sister does! It can be difficult for kids, and adults, to get all the nutrients they need from food alone. New! One A Day with Nature’s Medley, with its plant-based antioxidants from one total USDA serving size of fruits and vegetables, is a great way to help this family get nutritional support.

5 FUN Ways to Help Your Kids Develop Healthy Habits (Yes, Really!)

This post is a collaboration with Habitz. All opinions and kid photos are my own!

Habitz is a free, fun-to-use, customizable app that helps to empower and educate your kids to make healthy choices. Here are 5 FUN ways we help our kids develop healthy habits that they can take with them throughout life. #ad #Habitz

People, it’s time to talk about developing healthy habits in your kids!

I’ve had a bit of a learning experience lately since we got our puppy, Astro. When we got Athena, she was a surprise to me and I had toddlers at the time. Now I have two grade schoolers and I work at home. My recent days have been consumed with socializing, training, and caring for the puppy. It made me realize that it’s up to me, and my family, to ensure that he grows up with the tools he needs to be a great dog. Now if only it were so simple with kids! The thing is, though, my kids have my endless love and support. And I can provide the positivity and tools they need to develop healthy habits NOW.

And then they can take them into the rest of their lives.

Let’s talk about some goals in my family. Yours may look different, and probably will look different! We have four acres and chickens and a new puppy. Right now at least, our chores are beyond helping with dishes. And it’s also seasonal. Homework is a big goal for most of the year, but right now we’re looking more at summer reading and only outdoor play-based learning.

Kid goals:

1 – Drink more water, especially with warmer weather
2 – Exercise regularly. Scarlet does track during the school year and both have active summer camp and yard play
3 – Brushing teeth TWICE a day – we have only had once a day nailed down
4 – Playing/helping with puppy
5 – Taking vitamins
6 – Eating fruits and vegetables with every meal
7 – Practicing piano and voice
8 – No-screen time
9 – Reading time
10 – Reduce salty/sweet snacks (in some families that may include soda although it’s too “spicy” for my kids, ha!)

And that’s where our Habitz app comes in.

Habitz is a fun, interactive, customizable (choose your own habits) easy-to-use (Scarlet can use her own on the iPad) app that helps to empower and educate your kids to make healthy choices. Co-founder and CEO Daniel Fishkov says that with Habitz, kids are in the driver seat of making healthy choices – and that means no more arguing or convincing at the dinner table, and beyond. Habitz works to provide solutions to the most challenging parenting problems we all have – getting kids to make healthy choices in nutrition, fitness, sleep, and much more. The app is available on the iOS Apple Store and it inspires healthy choices in simple, fun ways using AI, education and gamification. I help Des use the app on my phone.

Scarlet can check into the app on the iPad linked to my account on my phone.

My kids are independently creating habits that we’ve had trouble instilling and enforcing ourselves. It’s tough sometimes. Cassidy and I both work full-time and we both have had different childhood experiences and our parenting styles aren’t quite the same. We do work well as a team, but instilling and enforcing aren’t our strongpoints. I’m happy to have an app that is fun for the kids. It’s also parent-approved because the experience and educational content of Habitz incorporates the body of knowledge and methods of leading Pediatric Dietitians, Sports Coaches, and Behavior Psychologists. This means that the AI powered personal health and wellness coach is accessible to families all over the world. It’s powerful and simple.

Our Habitz app has four core components that contribute to its success:

Goal Setting: Parents and their kids set goals for specific actions like drinking water, eating vegetables, completing a chore, or any other custom action.
Progress Tracking: Progress is scored and achievements unlocked to provide positive reinforcement.
Gamification: Kids earn points with each action, redeemable for real products in the Habitz Store.
Education: Viki, the Habitz chatbot, shares engaging stories with kids that educate on the importance of various healthy habits.

So it’s basically like having a personal Health and Wellness Coach for your kids that’s fun and backed by science! Educational too! On a personal level, my kids are happiest when they feel there is some sort of “keeping score” or “reward”. We select from a variety of goals and also can change/customize them. Kids complete their goals. Then they earn rewards which they can use for prizes, like Amazon toys or activities, sleepovers, etc. The reward system is helpful but kids also learn to maintain their healthy habits all on their own. My kids work harder to drink more water, eat more vegetables, and READ.

Here’s how it works:

I also love that the app is specific. We kept the goals about eating cheese (YUM), yogurt, and lean proteins. For Des, I can emphasize fish and beans, and with Scarlet, more greens. They love being rewarded for playing outside and reading books.

Here are 5 more FUN Ways to Help Your Kids Develop Healthy Habits (Yes, Really!)

1 – Plant a family garden. Cassidy is an epic gardener and once he got the kids involved, it helped other aspects of our lives. It’s fresh air and physical motion, but when kids grow their own produce, they want to eat it more!

2 – Move together as a family. Dance parties are pretty fun, and now that it’s spring and summer, we do family bike rides across a local footbridge and trail, and even in the school parking lot. We also hike with the dogs together.

3 – Play together every day. Exercise can be fun and I find myself enjoying frisbee time, hula hoop time, and even jumping on a trampoline. Why let kids have all the fun? You can model great habits just by playing with your kids.

4 – Play with your food too. We make fruit and veggie “rainbows” and yes, I use cookie and sandwich cutters to make fun lunches out of cheese, bread, fruit, etc. It only takes a few minutes and they remember it forever.

Here’s a biggie. Habitz will send a free gift to families that sign up through my link once your child reaches 500 coinz! This can be accomplished with only a few days of use. So install the app and see how much fun it can be to develop healthy habits together!
