Hey, everyone! I’m excited to talk about buying sustainable products today.

One of the brands we use in our daily life is Georgia-Pacific. Lately, I’ve been reading about how they believe in finding ways to add value through sustainability, for customers (like us), for communities, and for society. So they’ve been making everyday essential household products that help improve our lives for almost 100 years, and they have a goal to continue to do so responsibly, by consuming fewer resources and enhancing the quality of life for communities.

And did you know that Georgia-Pacific’s products are in 65% of US households; they’re found everywhere including office buildings, hospitals, and schools? I’m talking familiar brands like Quilted Northern®, Vanity Fair®, Angel Soft®, Brawny®, Sparkle®, and Mardi Gras®.

Why We’re Buying Sustainable Products These Days:

More about Georgia-Pacific:

They celebrated their 90th anniversary in 2017, and they operate in nearly 200 facilities – mostly in the US – and employ more than 30,000 people directly, creating approximately 89,700 jobs indirectly. Plus they’re a leading supplier of paper-based packaging and cellulose (which makes products absorbent, such as diapers). That’s why, as a leader in the production of so many paper goods, Georgia-Pacific takes pride in the ways they work to continuously reduce their impact on the environment. And these are the beloved products we use in our day-to-day lives! As a pregnant mother, I’ll be using diapers daily again. We use toilet paper, paper towels, plates, cups, napkins, and more. We’re avid gardeners, teaching our two kids about sustainability.

Sustainable Products:

As you may know, I’m a firm believer in making small steps for the bigger picture. And our buying habits can directly affect our wellbeing, and the planet as well. So one thing we do is recycle. Another thing we do at home is buying sustainable products. Luckily, GP makes it easy to choose their products, because of their sustainable practices. For example, GP launched Aria® bath tissue in 2018, which is a high-quality bath tissue that is more sustainable without sacrificing comfort. Plus, they started GP Recycling, which is one of the world’s largest buyers and sellers of recycled fiber and supplies GP facilities and sells to other recycled fiber users.

Social Impact:

So as you know, GP creates and contributes highly valued products to society, while also minimizing their impact. How do they do this? They focus on choosing the best materials while minimizing the impact of the products in use. They also build in end-of-life options, like recycling and composting where valuable. GP also believes in contributing to society in various ways, like how they have partnered with various organizations to help individuals and communities in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have a Bucket-Brigade program to help support underfunded local fire departments, by providing more than $2 million in grants. And GP employees are committed to supporting their communities through volunteerism.

What’s next?

Well, right now things are pretty hectic in the world. I’m confident in helping to guide my kids in what I think is the right direction. To be kind, to garden, to buy sustainable products, to recycle, and to think about the impact they’ll have on this world. I’m really excited to have three kids this fall – and to continue to make smart decisions about what I buy and do.
