Almost Completely Wordless Wednesday: Zoo Oddities.

Feast your eyes and prepare to be amazed, confused, or gassy. Or all of the above! Come one, come all, to my odd photos.

For a little introduction, my mom visited for three days last week for my birthday, and we planned little trips here and there. On the day before my birthday, we went to a local zoo/game farm that is privately owned and operated by a family that lives on the premises. I’m serious. I saw their house behind the aviary and the weird, ancient playground. I even spotted one of the family members or zoo owners’ friends with my own two eyes! We had kind words. She told me to come back. You know, I might.

If only to have answers for Scarlet to what all of the animals are in the exhibits that had missing information on their signs. And if only to tell her why there are strange, loud planes in the sky. And why the ducks follow Des around, because Des is the worst kid ever to follow around if you’re a duck. Also, what is with all the interbreed mating. Strange and wonderful, huh?

Or just strange? You tell me.

It was a place of muppet birds.

And white deer. I didn’t know there are white deer. Did you?

And rodents of unusual size, with alien eyes. Good poem?

In a world, in which giraffes watch trolley rides with bemused expressions.

Once I told Scarlet that Bella would grow up to be a tiger someday. She believed me.

I don’t know what this is, but it’s cute.

And at this place, wayward bunnies hop freely in and out of cages. Even bear cages. They survive too.

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

It’s not “what does the fox say”. It’s.. what on earth can you say about foxes that photos won’t say first?

  1. You just reminded me we still have to take the girls to the Bronx before the summer is out and over. We have free passes from Kevin’s co-worker and now we really should pick a day. But seriously, looked like a fun time and what fun pics you got, too. Happy almost Wednesday now πŸ˜‰

    1. My friends here just went to the Bronx zoo and had a blast. I haven’t been since six grade. It was a field trip! Can’t wait to see your photos.

      1. I went there on a field trip in sixth grade. I know you two will understand that New York City was a commonplace for field trips when we were kids, right? I also went to some in Philly.

    1. Yes! For $1.50, you could feed him some willow. He took it right out of your hands before you could pet him, to Scarlet’s disappointment.

  2. Looks like you guys had a great time. We actually saw a fox standing in a half way burned down house last week when we went to visit my husband’s Granfather. It was kind of scary knowing that there was a fox running around town. So we stayed inside our whole visit. We did not want to find out “What does the fox say”…lol

  3. It sounds a bit like a weird acid trip! LOL I want to meet these folks… can you imagine their lives? Their stories? Their history? Oh, I bet that would be a good book. GO BACK.

I mean- what a trip!!! Oh, how I love how you tell the story- your words are just perfectly matched to the images… and those rodents?! Wow.

Glorious and mysterious and quite perplexing all at once!

  4. Ahhhh! Some of these scare me! I actually was looking up some info online today about hybrid animals. I can’t believe you happened to recently visit a place like this and I’m seeing these photos on the same night I was looking up that info! Crazy! Des and Scarlet seemed to have grown since the last post. Hehe.

    1. What kind of hybrids were you looking up? I am so upset that I didn’t get pictures but there was something there called a Zedonk. Half zebra, half donkey. Never heard of that!

      1. Well I started off looking up information about cattle. I have this person I know who insists that the cows we eat today are hybrids. I couldn’t find anything really about it…just photos of interesting animal combinations that were rather frightening for me to look at in some instances. I think I did see a zedonk. πŸ™

  5. What an interesting (and odd?) mix of animals for sure! Had no idea there were white deers and those rodents really are large! I think Air Force One might have been flying to or from San Francisco! Apparently the Prez was there last week.

  6. That zoo looks like so much fun! I had no idea there were white deer, but we have capybaras at our local zoo so those aren’t too shocking. Great shots!

    1. Come to think of it, I have heard of capybaras but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one! It was so cool and right by the water. I was picturing them as woodland creatures.

  7. What a fun time!! Yes, that is one big military cargo jet! Jeffrey almost looks pissed? That photo of the fox behind the fence were AWESOME pictures! And I’m with you on the Bison and Yellowstone. Wish I was there as well, Tamara πŸ™‚

    1. Have you been there? I’ve been there twice and I found it life-changing. Jeffrey was totally pissed. I think he knows that he doesn’t belong in a zoo. He was chewing on the fence.

      1. Poor Jeffrey! Yes, I’ve been to Yellowstone probably 40 plus times in my life. My Dad always took me through there as a kid. Then there has been a huge family reunion held in Island Park (just outside the park) every June for 40 years now. Until my Dad got ill (and since passed away) we also went on an annual week long snowmobile trip in and around the park every Christmas through New Years. Agreed, it is life-changing πŸ™‚

  8. What an adventure! You guys really know how to “do zoo!” Some of those animals are just weird. Perhaps it’s better not to know their actual names – I prefer yours πŸ™‚ Love the picture of Scarlet, with both hands thrown overhead, coming down the slide!!!

        1. I have always been fascinated by them because I’m fascinated by things of unusual size, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one except in pictures!

    1. For some reason I didn’t take pictures of it but there were Zedonks. Half zebras, half donkeys. Did you know that they exist? I didn’t! And Des would not get off the trolley. We almost had to pay twice.

  9. I cannot even remember the last time I went to the zoo. It is just SO HOT here that walking around in the middle of the day sounds miserable. Actually, the zoo has started having after hours right before sunset to get people to come. It’s just that bad. Looks like your trip was wonderful though!

    1. We planned it for a day with low humidity and temperature in the 70s, otherwise I cannot stand walking around in the sun! And we did Disney World in January! I feel you!

  10. I would be dead in the water at a zoo with missing labels. I am so bad with animals. (Also with saying goodbye? Sorry, dear. I’m still around and I’ll be reading you xo)

    1. I was never into them but with it being summer and with me being four months behind on personal photos, it’s just become a thing of mine. I don’t know how long it will last but I do enjoy it. I thought it would be less work but I am such an overachiever that I usually put up 40 to 50 photos!

  11. Love the pictures! Thanks for sharing! The white deer, bicorn, and giraffe are great πŸ™‚

  12. Fun day at the zoo, It’s like the movie – We Bought a Zoo!

your post almost sounds like a Dr. Seuss book xxx

    Have a great day πŸ™‚

  13. Loved your intro to this post! Girl. you made some of the ugliest animals even look good! LOL. This looks so fun, We have been to the zoo once this year- but we need to go back soon!

  14. LOVE the photos of all the animals! πŸ™‚ I adore watching Deer, we have quite a few of them in the area and if you drive out at the right itme you can see them along the side of the road πŸ™‚ At least they don’t cross! Which reminds me, listen to this audio clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFCrJleggrI I nearly cried when I first heard this on the radio. Monkeys are awesome and Giraffes are too πŸ™‚ No llamas?! Hope you had a wonderful birthday, esp with your mom there πŸ™‚ Happy Hump Day lovely! -Iva

      1. Best part, it isn’t a joke!? A caller ACTUALLY called to complain about the “dear crossing signs” – it’s really mind blowingly hilarious. I die when I hear it, lol.

  15. Oh how cool! I have never seen a white deer or a bicorn before! Sounds very Harry Potter-esque. I love visiting zoos and have not been to one in a while. Are those military planes? They look different. I see a lot of planes during the week because I work near an airport. Looks like you all had a wonderful time with your mom! Glad your birthday celebration is continuing!

    1. Yes! It was an Air Force plane. I think it was just doing drills, because it happens a lot over that town and the ones around it. Also that’s not really a bicorn. It’s something I can’t remember what it’s called! I’m terrible. Eland?

  16. Awwww, so many beautiful pictures! I think I’m in love mostly with your fox photographs… what majestic animals πŸ™‚ thanks so much for sharing and sounds as though you had a great time with the kids!

  17. How fun! And I love that you pointed out what does/does not belong in cages lol Now that you told me how small Scarlet is, I cant help but look for things in the pictures to compare her size to! I need a Des/Scarlet side by side for comparison purposes! lol jk

  18. Hahahaha oh my god you made me laugh with that intro! Awesome photos, you really captured the personalities of the animals! And I agree about the intelligent beings who DO belong in cages lol, I have two of them that definitely need to be caged most of the time…errr…

  19. What a strange, fun place. There is something similar near me called “Exotic Animal Paradise” — you can drive through or ride in their vans… although I’ve heard the animals are so tame they will basically jump on your car, so it’s best to ride in the old beat-up vans instead.

Your captions all seem to be verses from a children’s book. Perhaps your next writing project?

    1. That is totally a life dream of mine. I just worry my stories would be very sad, or over their heads. I guess some good books are like that. I used to go to the Six Flags safari in New Jersey and the animals would put their faces in your car window and try to still your food.

  20. I laughed at Bella growing up to be a tiger and Des being the worst kid to be followed by ducks. Hahaha! You really love animals. Your photos are fascinating and I like the bunny one!

  21. What awesomeness/craziness to live surrounded by! Looks like a fun trip with some pretty interesting animals. I look forward to taking Eve to zoos when she seems to appreciate them a little more than at the current moment (thought she does squeal with delight now when the cat walks in the her room).

  22. Sometimes those independent zoos are the best, aren’t they? Full of all sorts of fun oddities. And thank goodness the ROUS’s didn’t attack you? (seriously, what is that first one? half kangaroo, half rodent?)

  23. Your zoo photos are BREATH TAKING!!! They are SO GOOD!! WOW!
(And honestly…DES IS GETTING SO GROWN UP! He is so big!! How did that happen?!?!? WHAT?!?!)

I let out a SQUEE with your *rodents of unusual size* because I *just* got back from Target and I bought “The Princess Bride” for Lucy. We saw it for $5 at the checkout. I started quoting different parts of the movie and she just looked at me like I was crazy. That’s when I realized SHE HASN’T SEEN IT YET!! What kind of awful parent am I? I threw it on the conveyor belt immediately!! –Lisa

    1. Five bucks! Target really is the answer to everything. I can’t wait to show my kids that fantastic movie.
Thank you for your compliments. And yes, that boy is not a baby anymore. Sob!

  24. I haven’t been to a ZOO in ages! Well, not ages, but it’s been two years….Addy was in a stroller the last time we went. I LOVE all of the pictures, you are so talented. You know…if you were my neighbor…I would bake you cookies and then make you teach me… πŸ™‚

  25. aww i just love all of these amazing pics of the animals, and you are right Des does NOT belong in a cage πŸ™‚ He is too cute for all of that!!

  26. Whoa, those fox photos are incredible! You should submit one of those to some kind of contest!

  27. I love your pics Tamara of course but alas no Moose. πŸ™ We’ve been to 2 zoos this summer and only managed to capture a pic of a moose for you at one of them. The kids looked like they had an amazing time and would have been nice to see you in a photo too but maybe next time. πŸ™‚ Hope you had a Wonderful Wednesday.

  28. Love the giraffe pictures. Scarlett is getting so tall but WHAT has happened to Des? He is losing the baby look! He got so big boy looking in the week I have been away.

    1. You’re not the first to say that! I live with him and even I can see it. He’s changing so fast. Also his hair was covering his eyes completely and I finally cut it myself so he does look older.

    1. I totally did! A lot of them had signs right on there and I found that the zoo was very educational. It would give a lot of detailed explanations for the breeds.

  29. Rodents of any size creep me out; I’ll stick with the giraffe! My kids still love the zoo – it’s timeless entertainment.

  30. Love your pictures. We love the zoo!

And we see those Air Force planes all the time. Maybe they were headed to Hanscom AFB? I lived there for a year once. I want to go back. We were right by Boston.

  31. finally someone else like me with shutter finger. I snap snap everywhere we go. πŸ™‚ Great pictures! They are so pretty! πŸ™‚ I so want to go to the zoo before school goes back in.

  32. Love, love love. The smiles on the trolley ride! Geoffrey’s lumpy head! I’m pretty sure a couple of the weird ones are Aussies. And that car swing? There’s a little man in my life who would have had to be wrenched away from that.

    1. That reminds me of a Phish song that goes, “Carini had a lumpy head!” Cassidy would be so proud of me for knowing that reference.

  33. 1. Those creatures look downright Seussical. Or at least like they should be in The Croods.

    2. It seems like wherever your mom goes, there’s the holiday.

    3. That intelligent primate reminds me of Michael Caine.

    1. I laughed out loud at this, although I so enjoy a good Michael Caine moment. This monkey was giving the funniest facial expressions people. I honestly think he could be running the whole zoo.
My mom is definitely a party.

      1. How cool is it that you go to these awesome places and take awesome pictures? It should be my luck that one of my favorite bloggers goes to cool places but sucks at photography, or is a photographic artist, but goes to crappy places.

  34. I am now so bummed that we have not gone to the zoo this year! Why are all giraffes Geoffrey’s? Surely there must be a George, or at least a Gavin?
Love the black and whites mixed in with the colour shots!

    1. Isn’t that the name of the giraffe for Toys “R” Us? Do you have that up there? I wanted to use black-and-white to give it an old-time feel. Although I think you could even tell from one of pictures that the trolley is bright pink!

  35. Murphy and I saw a fox not too long ago when we were running. They stared each other down. The fox was beautiful! We haven’t been to a zoo in the longest time. I think next time our nieces and nephews are here, we need to plan a trip. I always enjoy the Bronx zoo. I am really wanting to go on a safari though one of these days!

    1. I don’t think I’ve been to the Bronx Zoo since I was a kid! I think it’s wonderful. And we did see a red fox here before we moved but not since.

  36. Love the pictures from the zoo – the giraffes are so cool!!!
And, the C5 is pretty amazing, too!!!! (Chris flies the KC135!)

  37. What an awesome zoo trip!

I love Emus – they’re totally Muppet birds.

Swift foxes are so adorable – we have a couple at our zoo. My favourite is the giraffe. We don’t have any at our zoo but I once visited a zoo that had them and I could have watched them all day.

    Thanks for sharing!
    xoxo

    1. Really? Some summer! I will admit that usually by now we have had one or two heat waves. We have not had any heat waves this summer, and it doesn’t look like any are on their way.

    1. I went there once and it was glorious! I seem to remember that there was a wild animal park that was separate from the main zoo in the city. And it was even more wild.
