All Summer In a Day.

The thing about summer is…once it comes, it really comes. There’s no turning back.

Nothing about today was expected. And of course, that’s life. I just felt a bit ill-prepared because the recent string of hot and sunny days has rendered me completely defenseless. All of the last five days have blurred together into one big daze of sunscreen, flushed cheeks, watermelon, hot cars, hot pavement, drinking from the hose, ice cream, and just about anything else you can name that has to do with summer. It’s been really, really dreamy. She thinks so too:

When you’re a kid, you don’t care about the heat or the humidity. You just stay out there until dusk and you’re covered with prickly heat rash, bug bites and sweat and you don’t care at all. Then when you’re older (at least if you’re a girl like me), you start to avoid wrecking your hair, make-up and outfits. You may wish for the dreamy, mild and dry days of the west coast.

Well I’m happy to say I’m over it. Maybe it was the long winter, but probably it’s being a mom to a toddler and knowing I’ll never win any fights against summer. Heat, bugs and humidity? Bring it on. Let your crazy curls fly. And since I don’t have crazy curls, despite having had them as a young child, I’ll let her crazy curls fly.

The weather has turned very suddenly and it’s here to stay. We’ve been borrowing a car for two weeks and have had a ball chasing summer throughout western Mass. We’ve caught it and it’s ours now.

Someone told me that only two weeks ago, Scarlet had a still-dark scar on her right cheek. Umm..yeah. I can’t see it anymore during these summer days.

Summer agrees with things. It’s a very agreeable season.

People say they get through the winter, knowing that a sweet summer will reward them for their waiting. It’s the opposite for me. I can barely get through the winter with the knowledge that a sweet summer will reward me. It only makes me madder. If it can be like this, I pretty much want it to always be like this.

It brings out the good kind of crazy in all of us.

Speaking of crazy, this is a bee that was hovering over my head. It was so big I thought it was a hummingbird for several minutes.

During one of these last five days – who can tell which one – I took Scarlet to Quabbin Reservoir. I was secretly hoping to see one of their many moose, but I’ve been told you have to really search the northern woods for that.

Many people had the same idea as us.

This tower had 11 flights of stairs, and Scarlet insisted on climbing each one herself. When we got to the look-out tower at the top, she got scared and went downstairs again.

Cassidy went away and came back somewhere in the middle of our sun daze. We missed him when he was gone and welcomed him right back home a short time later.

There were bubbles. And gardens. And baseball games. And sunsets. And then, ice cream. Just how it should be.

If I had the words to describe it all, I would. But since I don’t, these photographs should suffice.

And so we followed the bubbles and the sunset home.

  1. Today's poem holds that the act of attention is a form of prayer. The Summer DayMary OliverWho made the world?Who made the swan, and the black bear?Who made the grasshopper? This grasshopper, I mean-the one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eating sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face. Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.I don't know exactly what a prayer is.I do know how to pay attention, how to fall downinto the grass, how to kneel down in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day.Tell me, what else should I have done?Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?Tell me, what is it you plan to dowith your one wild and precious life?

  2. My best summers ever were the ones spent with your Mom and Uncle Jamie! Oh we had some good times.
