7 Ways to Prepare for the Birth of Your Baby

Waiting for your baby to be born is exciting and nerve-wracking. If you're expecting, here are 7 ways to prepare for the birth of your baby.

Waiting for your baby to be born is both exciting and nerve-wracking. After all, you want to make sure you are adequately prepared!

Of course, there will always be something new to buy or learn about when it comes to a newborn. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do as much as you can to make the first few months of having your bundle of joy as easy as possible. So, if you’re a mother-to-be, here are seven ways to prepare for your baby’s arrival.

1: Go Shopping for Baby Items

With your new baby in your arms, the last thing you want to do is go shopping for essentials such as diapers, baby clothes, and soft toys, so make sure you shop for these items well in advance! Some of the things you’ll need include:

  • A crib
  • Diapers and wipes
  • A baby swing
  • Baby clothes (of various sizes)
  • A stroller
  • Breast pump

During your pregnancy, do plenty of research on which items to get. After all, you want to invest in the best swing and stroller you can! For inspiration, check out Baby Shortlist for their guide to the best baby swing.

2: Read a Parenting Book

Parenting is often a skill you learn as you go. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t acquire basic knowledge beforehand, so read a parenting book.

Just remember that it’s OK not to remember everything! Even just reading a parenting book shows that you’re doing a good job.

3: Go to a Birthing Class

Going to a birthing class is an excellent exercise for moms-to-be. Take dad-to-be along, too, as they will likely be by your side during the birth. A birthing class by Nadine von Hypnobirthing CH will hopefully ease some of your anxiety about giving birth. Plus, you’ll learn the best techniques to make birth as smooth as possible.

4: Eat Well and Do Light Exercise

While you shouldn’t diet while pregnant, eating well and doing light exercises is a great way to prevent too much weight gain, ease constipation, and even reduce the risk of complications during the delivery. Talk to your doctor before making any changes to your diet while pregnant.

5: Freeze a Ton of Meals

The last thing you want to do when parenting a newborn is cook – especially during those first few weeks. So instead of relying on food deliveries and unhealthy microwave meals, cook a ton of healthy meals before giving birth and then put them in the freezer. You’ll be glad of such an easy and nutritious meal when you’re in between nursing!

6: Talk About Shared Duties

Many new parents get overwhelmed at how much effort looking after a newborn requires. That’s why you must talk about shared duties beforehand. That way, you ensure one person doesn’t get left doing all the work.

7: Pack a Hospital Bag

Lastly, pack a hospital bag. You don’t know how long you’ll be in labor nor how long you’ll stay in the hospital. Plus, you likely will want your partner by your side instead of sending them to retrieve your essentials! The bag should include hospital paperwork, fresh underwear, a robe, toiletries, and lotion.

Preparing for the birth of your newborn baby will help relieve some of the anxiety you have surrounding the delivery and the first few months of parenting. Plus, with the proper preparation, you will ease some of the more difficult tasks of being a new mom, such as cooking and shopping for baby items.
