Do you ever think about how there are three pillars of wellness – mind, body and soul?

I do a lot as a parent. One of the reasons I became both a parent and a writer are similar. It’s about all these ideas in my head, and wanting to share them. It’s about wanting to be remembered, and raising children who want to be remembered. And it’s about making an impact. I have always had the gift of motivation, and it’s no big secret that I strive to motivate my kids year-round – in many ways. I want to them to be kind and happy, strong and brave, and ambitious and motivated. In those ways, they’ll achieve balance with the three pillars of wellness. Teaching them about the pillars starts with teaching them what the pillars are, and what they mean. That way we can talk about ways to keep facing forward through our lives.

Here are my 7 ways to motivate your children and help keep them healthy:

1 – Find your local Boys & Girls Clubs of America. They provide safe, fun and affordable places for kids to go after school, or during other out-of-school time to connect with caring trained professionals. They also engage in enriching programs and activities. These clubs currently serve 4 million kids and teens a year, at more than 4,300 clubs in communities across the country – from dense cities to suburbs and to rural areas. And to native lands and U.S. military installations worldwide. Boys & Girls Clubs of America has an important mission to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. They do this by encouraging kids to eat right, keep fit, and form positive relationships with themselves and others. That’s why the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, in partnership with the Anthem Foundation and The Coca-Cola Company, offers the Triple Play Program to kids and teens in clubs across the country. This Triple Play Program focuses on the three components of health and wellness – the mind, body and soul. The Triple Play Program empowers kids to excel by giving them the tools and education needed to lead a life of health and wellness.

And sets them on a path to a great future.

It’s important to keep kids active during school breaks, and to keep them motivated year-round while maintaining a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Breaks in schedules and routines can derail our best efforts, leading to inactive or unhealthy days. Since we’re getting close to two holiday breaks, it’s important to keep promoting healthy, active lifestyles for our kids – that also fit within our busy schedules. Triple Play started in 2005 and since then, more than one million Club members have participated in the program – and increased their physical activity, established good nutritional habits, developed interpersonal skills, and improved self-confidence. These are great lessons and activities in the Triple Play program!

And here’s six more ways to motivate your children and help keep them healthy:

2 – Just listen. When you were a kid, you probably had BIG dreams, right? I know I did. I know I still do. The most important thing my parents ever did was to not deny my dreams. Children mainly think anything is possible. Let them.

3 – Teach your child life skills. Sometimes I think it’s so obvious, and other times I realize how much I have missed! Luckily I have a partner who fills in where I lack. Obviously we want these life skills to be age-appropriate, but they build on each other and grow. I’m talking cooking and baking, age-relevant chores, gardening, writing letters, picking out their own gifts, navigating the world, knowing basic first aid, and more! Every kid is different, but life skills are always important.

4 – Be positive. They learn SO MUCH from you. Having a positive attitude/outlook can be earth-shatteringly enriching for your children. Sometimes it’s hard, but I believe I got my positivity from my mom, so I’m keeping that cycle going!

5 – Gently propel them into action. As kids grow, their interests and passions begin, develop, and grow. They can change too. Pay special attention to their interests and help them write down their dreams, research their goals, and make a timeline for achievements. Just the way you would for yourself!

6 – Create visual games, challenges and inspiration. Creating a vision board is one great idea. You can also develop little games and challenges to teach them about making small achievements – and baby steps – along the way.

7 – Show support. Your support will mean everything to them. Have small celebrations for every achievement. It’s so beneficial to have small rewards to help along the way.

  1. Love your advice here and I try so hard to listen when my girls speak as I know when they are talking to me I want their full attention if possible. So, I try to give them the same in return. So thanks for that reminder here today 🙂

  2. I love your tips! Natalie is always moving, so I don’t worry as much about her. But my son needs to be prodded out of his room. Those jumping pillows help! He enjoys those!
