5 Ways to Safeguard Your Home During Spring Cleaning

Spring comes in spurts around here!We had a warmer February than we did April, and now May is a mixed bag. Three days ago, I had my heat on. Today? I needed my a/c! What a weird mix. Due to the up and down weather, we didn’t even start our spring cleaning until this week. This was such a delight because I was able to gather all of the coats, boots, hats, scarves, and mismatched mittens and put them in a giant box under the stairs in our basement. This finally feels free! It’s funny how spring cleaning gives you momentum to tackles all sorts of goals and projects that you didn’t even know you had! Last year it was a chicken coop with a fancy roof. Before that, we organized our entire garage. This year, after renovations, we’re focusing on window safety. This year we’re working on using a cleaning service for our home, like Mya Cleaning Service.

5 Ways to Safeguard Your Home During Spring Cleaning:1 – Look to your windows. Kids and cords don’t mix, so make sure to only use cordless window covering products in your home or products that have inaccessible cords. And replace older corded window products with today’s safer products. What you can do is look for the Best for Kids™ certification label in stores and online. This makes it easy to identify products that are best suited for homes with young children. It’s an important household measure to make sure little ones are safe.

2 – Make sure to check and/or change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. You should test them monthly, and change the batteries at least once a year. Put detectors in at least each floor of your house.

3 – De-clutter your house. When we clean, we actually make an even bigger mess! I know it sounds counter-productive but we’re guilty of leaving out screwdrivers, small batteries, vacuum cleaners with cords you can trip over, etc. I’m not saying not to use all those things. You need them! Just clean up after yourself each night after spring cleaning.

4 – Clean out your medicine cabinets and cupboards and throw away expired products. This is also a great time to see what you have, and to make sure it’s all away from little hands – whether you get cabinet locks or put it high up.

5 – Gates and furniture. Doorways and window can be quite dangerous so make sure that kids can’t fall down stairs or out windows. Secure your heavy furniture – like TVs, bookshelves, etc. so that it cannot fall on a young child.

These are definitely tips I never thought about until I had young kids. And as my kids grow, I still think about all of these tips because I have more than a half dozen little nieces and nephews and I want my house to be safe for them.
