Let’s talk about keeping a healthy pet!
It all started when Cassidy surprised us with a puppy, Athena, when Scarlet was four and Des was one. In fact, Scarlet named her, but it was after a song of the same name that I used to sing all the time. Then we got Junie, an indoor kitten, because we wanted a true pet cat, which she totally is! Last spring, we brought home our puppy, Astro. Through all of this, we currently have 20 chickens as well but they’re outdoor pets. We love our three indoor pets and work hard to take care of them. It’s important to us that every pet is a happy pet and also a healthy pet.
As you probably know, having an extra pet means extra love. It also means extra work, and that’s the kind of work we love. It’s because every new member of the family needs care, and that’s why we started all three pets on Purina ONE® from Target. Astro and Athena eat Purina ONE Chicken & Rice, and Juniper (Junie) eats Purina ONE Indoor Advantage food. Athena sees a pet cardiologist for a minor heart murmur, and this is the food we were recommended for all pets.
Purina ONE Chicken & Rice has real chicken as the #1 ingredient. The dual-defense antioxidant blend helps support a strong immune system, and natural sources of glucosamine help to support healthy joints. And my dogs love it! How could they not? The protein-rich, tender, meaty morsels and crunchy kibble have a taste that dogs love. Also, high protein helps to support strong muscles, and omega-6 fatty acids help to support healthy skin and coats. Not to mention that 0% fillers means that all of the high-quality ingredients have a purpose.
Now, let’s talk about Purina ONE Indoor Advantage. It’s made with real turkey as the #1 ingredient, helps minimize hairballs, and helps maintain a healthy weight in your indoor cat. Antioxidants help support a strong immune system, and this food offers 42 grams of protein per cup without any added fillers. Did I mention that the crunchy kibble helps reduce plaque buildup and whitens teeth? And Junie LOVES it!
5 Signs of a Healthy Pet You Need to Know:
1 – Has a clean, shiny coat.
Although my dogs get super muddy in New England spring, for the most part, they have shiny and clean coats. They do need occasional baths after rolling around in stuff I don’t even want to talk about but otherwise, they rarely need baths.
2 – Maintains a consistent, lean weight.
Dog and cat obesity is a top health concern. If you notice that your dog or cat has dropped or gained a noticeable amount of weight, call your vet. Dogs and cats can get serious health problems from being overweight.
3 – Has fresh breath.
A clean mouth is a healthy mouth! Dogs and cats, like humans, can get gum disease and tartar buildup. Our pets get routine dental care (or at least dental checkups) to ensure healthy teeth and gums.
4 – Your pet is engaged with you.
Healthy pets, especially dogs, like to spend time with family. Dogs greet you at the door, want to play, and are generally interested in what you’re doing. Cats can be super independent, but Junie bonds to at least some of us! When I’m away, she’s always happy to see me when I return home. And we have our quiet cuddle time. There are many indications that she’s interested in our actions, and I would certainly notice if that stopped.
5 – Has regular bladder and bowel movements.
And with both cats and dogs, you can tell when something is off. With the dogs, we can tell because we clean up after them in the yard and at the park. And with Junie, well, litter boxes can reveal a lot! That’s how we figured out she had a bladder problem. And that’s why we’re happy to know what we know about feeding our pets healthy food.
As you know by now, I love going to Target for my weekly shopping trip. They have everything I need and more, and there are so many great services to use—like Order Pickup, Shipt, Restock, and DriveUp. This makes it easier to keep a healthy pet!
