When you’re planning a family getaway there are a lot of things that you need to consider. You can’t just pick somewhere that you’d like to go because there might not be much for the kids to do. If you don’t keep them entertained, you’re not going to have the relaxing trip that you’ve been dreaming of. But it’s also important that you find somewhere that has something for the adults to do as well, otherwise, you won’t get anything out of the trip. That’s why it’s so important to find somewhere that has a good combination of the two.
When people are thinking of great family destinations, Singapore probably doesn’t spring to mind. This fast paced, rapidly growing city is best known as a hub for business, not a great place for a family vacation. But in reality, Singapore is actually ideal for families. There are so many great family activities and most of the places you’ll visit while you’re there are set up for people with kids. The other major benefit is that it’s a culture very different to our own. One of the best reasons to travel with children is to broaden their minds and introduce them to different cultures so they grow up to be well rounded, tolerant adults. The great thing about Singapore is that, while it has seen a lot of growth and modernisation in recent years, you’ll still find a lot of old traditions and culture there. It’s a melting pot of cultures which is perfect for educating the kids and it’s great fun at the same time. If you’re looking for somewhere a bit different for your next family trip, these are just some of the great reasons to choose Singapore.
Good weather is always a priority when you’re looking for travel destinations. Nobody wants to spend a week in the pouring rain. A lot of the countries in Asia are subject to monsoons which obviously isn’t ideal when you’re trying to enjoy a relaxing vacation but don’t worry, Singapore doesn’t get hit by the monsoon season. You’re also pretty much guaranteed good weather all year around. That’s a big bonus if you’re trying to cut costs and go during the winter.
Good Family Accommodation
Singapore hosts a lot of business people all year round so there is no shortage of great hotels. But don’t worry, there are plenty of family friendly ones as well. The Shangri La Hotel has a great pool area, a spa for the parents to relax in and a great breakfast buffet every morning so you don’t need to worry about feeding everybody. As an added bonus, there is also a babysitting service and all of the staff are very friendly and accommodating so if you do want to go out for a nice romantic evening alone one night, you can be sure that the kids are in good hands. There are some great budget options like Holiday Inn as well for families that are travelling on a tight budget.
Hotels are fine but it’s often better to have your own space when you’ve got the family with you. It’s cheaper as well because you can use the kitchen to cook your own food instead of eating out every night. Singapore has loads of great options for renting apartments and houses for the week (do a quick search for a Singapore room for rent nearby me to see what your options are). It’s usually more cost effective to rent a private property in Singapore and you’ll have a bit more space for you and the family.
Family Friendly Locations
Almost everywhere you go in Singapore is family friendly which you don’t always find when you’re travelling. A lot of places like shopping centres have nursing rooms fitted out with changing tables and sinks etc. so you don’t have to run around finding somewhere to change the baby. They also tend to offer free use of prams which is a big help because you might not want to pay the extra money to take your own on the plane with you. There’s no shortage of family parking with larger spaces located closer to the door so if you do rent a car to get around while you’re out there, you don’t need to worry about parking. There are usually play areas for the kids in most large shopping centres as well so if they get bored, you’ve got somewhere to entertain them for a bit. Having all of these family friendly amenities can really make life easier when you’re travelling with kids.
The public transport links are excellent in Singapore and they’re geared up for families as well. There are changing stations at all of the stations and it’s fine to take a pram on all of the buses. On top of that, there are priority queues for people with limited mobility. That covers the elderly and expectant mothers as well as parents with prams so you don’t need to worry about the kids getting restless while you’re in a long queue for the bus.
Great Activities For Kids
There are so many great activities for kids in Singapore you’ll be spoilt for choice. The Jurong East Swimming Complex is a great water park complete with a lazy river, a couple of big swimming pools, a kids area and 3 great water slides. Marine Cove is definitely worth a visit as well. There’s a great playground area that is great fun for kids up to the age of about 12. There’s a nice restaurant there so you can grab something to eat at the end of the day as well.
If the kids love animals, Singapore is one of the best places to take them because there are some great zoos and safari parks there. The best one is probably the Night Safari. The world’s first nocturnal zoo has so many great animals to see and doing it at night is a unique experience for the whole family.
Singapore might not be top of your list of travel destinations but next time you’re planning a big family adventure, you should definitely consider it.
