For as long as I could remember, I’ve wanted a daughter to dress up with.

I think many of us have those thoughts before we have kids. We imagine what kind of kids we might have. And sometimes we’re close, but often we can’t even begin to wrap our heads around these complex beings. I knew I’d have a daughter who would love to read, but I pictured someone more shy and maybe more eccentric. Scarlet is a people’s person, though. She can get along with everyone, and she is bubbly and kind. She’s athletic and good at math, but of course, can spend hours reading. That’s one of our activities together actually, but SPOILER. When she was born, she looked a lot like I had as a kid, but now she has her own unique look, and her own flair. We butt heads like crazy, but also meet perfectly in the middle.

And I LOVE that we can dress alike. I’m not even sure if I should say “already” or “still” because I hope it lasts. I think that one day we’ll be borrowing each other’s clothes. I was lucky to have two sisters and we all three wore the same size. One of us was curvier, one was more athletic, and I was more willowy, but somehow we all wore the same size, and could share with our mom too. Scarlet got a jean jacket just last month that I coveted. I was so happy when my friend, Rachel, found me the adult version of the jean jacket. I mean – could it get more adorable than this? Jean jacket twins for life, I hope!

I’ll never forget that it all started with a red peacoat, and now it’s leggings, jean jackets, dresses, and more!

It’s not just dressing alike that I love, but it’s mostly about the fact that she’s proud to do so. Last week we had an occasion to dress alike, and she spent a lot of time putting together our outfits. Hers wasn’t clean so she made sure that we’d have enough time to wash and fold her outfit. I was charmed, I will admit. I love that she loves spending time with me, because of course the feeling is powerfully mutual. And here’s our comprehensive list of 5 mother-daughter activities for spring!

1 – Train together. Last fall, Scarlet was in a 5K and we had the option to join her. Cassidy wound up doing it, because I had anxiety about it and didn’t want to disappoint her. Now I realize I couldn’t possibly disappoint her if I at least tried. She trains twice a week for her upcoming spring 5K and I’m training too, because I don’t want her to leave me in the dust then!

2 – Volunteer together. Now that it’s spring, it’s time to tackle a community service project together! Pick one activity that will help you two give back to others, while also spending that impactful and meaningful time together.

3 – Find passions together. We love to read together, and make little dreams come to life. Whether that’s hiking, a family-friendly class or activity, or important events locally, find something to flourish with together. The sky is the limit.

4 – Road trip together. That’s sort of our thing. We love to explore new places and stay in hotels too! She loves a good room service picnic. Des often comes with us, but we started our scenic road trips just the two of us. Our first trip was Vermont:

5 – Shop together. In fact, you can shop as a whole family at DSW. That’s my favorite store! Be still my heart. I fell in love with it in New Jersey, and then had an incredible location to visit downtown in San Francisco. Now that I live in western MA, I was so pleased to find that we have a big location only a few miles from home. So good! Reebok Classics for the fam!

You can get a pair of Reebok Classics for the whole family today! I love the benefits of one stop shopping for the whole family at DSW. I never imagined I’d be going to my favorite store years later as a mama, but here I am, totally thrilled!

We don’t always match, but when we do, I can’t believe how much we have in common! We both like colorful leggings, red dresses, cool headbands, and comfortable, pretty shoes. I love knowing we’ll be running together in the same shoes!

  1. Omg, you two are perfect together. And by the way, like you I wanted a daughter to dress up with me for as long as I could recall, too. And then I got two of them! But seriously I am so going to try some of your spring togetherness tips for me with my girls now, as well. Thanks 🙂

  2. You guys are adorable! She is truly your mini-me! Shelby and I don’t really look alike or dress alike, but I do love dressing her! She also shares my love for Disney songs and coloring, so I think we will always have activities to bond over.

  3. Oh I love that you are Scarlet are matching! Great suggestions for things to do together. Mother Daughter activities are the best!! My daughter and I just had a fun crafting session with my mom this weekend so it was great to have three generations there. Love the Reeboks!

  4. Hi Tamara, how cute to have a mini you. Those leggings are the business and look great on both of you. My daughter would die if we were seen dressed the same, but that doesn’t stop her stealing my jumpers or jacket! These days my favourite thing to do with my daughter is to sit and just be. She used to come running with me, which I enjoyed, but that no linger appeals to her.

    xx

  5. I just love that you’re able to dress alike. I’m so big in size now that I can’t find dresses or anything really to fit me and Madison both. I used to LOVE Reebok growing up and remember when my mother bought me a pair in high school, now I’m older, their shoes no longer fit me – I have big feet, but my love for Reebok remains.

  6. I think there is something special about having a “mommy and me” activity with each of your children. Something only the two of you do together, and it doesn’t even matter what. It gives that feeling of connection and uniqueness.. a familiar “I love you.” For example, one of my daughter’s and I go out to a specific chain restaurant every 6 months or so and talk about “what we’d like to be able to say in 6 months.” We record this on one of our phones, and it is fun to look back each time.

  7. Or course I love all the matching outfits, especially the spandex and jean jackets, you both look so cute. Very cute red peacoat 🙂 I plan on taking a road trip with my Mom when she retires in the next few years. I can’t wait.

  8. These are the cutest photos! I LOVE the shoes. My daughter would actually wear those. She’s become picky on what she’ll wear these days, but I showed her these shoes and she was all, “Can I get a pair?”

  9. I’m all for mother-daughter looks!!! I’m hoping to sew more of them this summer for me and my daughter. I love the matching jean jackets on you guys. ☺
