In fact, I remember the ones we had at my first house ever, which we moved from when I was five. I remember hiding behind the couch during a witch scene, and I remember the popcorn with extra butter. There’s just a bit of magic when you say “family movie night”, isn’t there? Yes. Yes there is. It’s because it’s about being together – sharing snacks, sharing activities, sharing movies, and sharing memories. Movies are pivotal to our lives. I can remember the sleepover party in which I knew I wanted to be a photographer (based on the gorgeous cinematography in the film) and I remember seeing a horror movie with my older brother and sister that scared me from swimming for awhile! I think about that a lot when selecting movies for my kids.
And that is why I picked up the How to Train Your Dragon 3 Walmart Exclusive DVD Gift Set at Walmart the other day. I was planning for a family movie night, and this exclusive DVD gift set includes two Funko keychains. One for each kid! That’s just one way we get ready for our night.
3 Steps to a How to Train Your Dragon 3 Family Movie Night:
Getting set up at Walmart.
1 – First of all, we head to Walmart to get the How to Train Your Dragon 3 Walmart Exclusive DVD Gift Set with two Funko keychains. Did you know that Walmart also has How to Train Your Dragon 3 apparel and toys? So that’s one of the biggest ways to get psyched. Scarlet got a shirt and Des got a toy. With the DVD and the gear, we’re ready to enjoy our night in!
A dragon-inspired recipe: Toothless Cupcakes
What you need:
One dozen chocolate cupcakes, baked and cooled down completely
2 tbsp butter
2.5 cups mini marshmallows
3 cups rice cereal
1 stick butter, softened
2-3 tbsp milk
2 cups icing sugar
1 small drop black gel food coloring
6-8 oz. black fondant
6-8 oz. white fondant
Yields: One dozen decorated cupcakes
1 – First, line a baking sheet with wax paper and set aside.
2 – In a medium-sized saucepan, melt 2 tbsp butter over medium heat. Add marshmallows.
3 – Mix until marshmallows are completely melted. Once they are, remove saucepan from heat.
4 – Fold rice cereal into marshmallow mixture.
5 – Shape rice cereal into one dozen eggs – about 2 inches in length and 1 ¼ inch in width at its widest point.
6 – Allow for the rice cereal egg treats to set in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes.
7 – In the meantime, make your buttercream.
8 – Pour stick of butter, icing sugar and milk into a bowl. Using an electric mixer, beat on slow and then increase to high.
9 – Once the ingredients start to combine, add black gel food coloring and mix until tinted.
10 – Scoop buttercream into a piping bag with Wilton icing tip 1M attached.
11 – Frost each cupcake.
12 – Roll out each fondant color so that they’re both about ¼ of an inch thick.
13 – Using Wilton tip #12, use the smaller end to cut out circles of each fondant color.
14 – Cover half of each egg with black fondant circles and the other half with white fondant circles. You can have the circles overlap, as these will give the illusion of “dragon scales.”
15 – Insert a toothpick into each cupcake and place one egg on each cupcake. Serve and enjoy!
A dragon-inspired craft: Toothless Toilet Paper Rolls:
What you need:
1 toilet paper roll
1 foam brush
Black acrylic paint
2 green pom poms
2 green googly eyes
1 small piece of black cardstock or construction paper
Black crepe paper or streamers
Hot glue gun
What you do:
1 – Paint toilet paper roll with black paint and allow to dry for at least one hour.
2 – Once dried, glue green pompoms on the top portion of toilet paper roll. Then, glue googly eye on each pompom.
3 – Cut out 2 rectangles from black cardstock – about 1 inch in length and half an inch in width. Trim one end of each rectangle to round it out.
4 – Fold the bottom portion of your cardstock cutout and glue it on the opposite end of the toilet paper roll – these will act as the dragons nostrils.
5 – Cut out crepe paper/streamers so that they’re about 8 inches long and ½ an inch wide.
6 – Cut out strips from white paper so that that they’re 8 inches long and ¼+ an inch white.
7 – Glue the paper strips on the inside of the toilet paper roll, all around the circumference – you will want to glue them on the opposite end of where the eyes are glued.
And that’s it! Three fun ways to start a family movie night viewing party. You need the DVD, the apparel, the toys, the cupcake supplies, and the craft supplies. And then it’s pretty much a dream night at home! We’re super excited because How to Train Your Dragon 3 has brought in a new character – a female dragon! One thing I love about the movie is that it gave good closure as the trilogy ended. It was funny, engaging, and super emotional too. We LOVED Hiccup.
