Frugal Parenting: Giving Your Kids The Best!

Children are expensive.

This is the one phrase you will hear any time you get pregnant, or think about getting pregnant, or have a partner, or become a teenager – basically, any time in your life that you could have a child, someone is going to warn you about the cost. Shall I let you in on a little secret?

Children are only as expensive as you want them to be.

How many people think a child is expensive, but then buys in all the latest trendy baby gear? The prep machines and formula. The diaper genies and changing tables. The baby baths that automatically tell you their temperature. The travel systems – oh, goodness, the travel systems. Even things like Disneyland and their first ever vacation. The cost of all of these things add up and before you know it, you’ve got a few thousand dollars missing from your savings account and a house cramped with baby clutter – most of which you don’t even need. Plus, does a newborn need Disneyland?

Most of the time, people turn to sites like and get money off all of the baby clutter, first vacations that they take together. It doesn’t seem so bad when money is knocked off the initial price. Do you know what an even better cost is, though? Free. Free is a good price to pay to raise a baby, and with some tweaks and savvy thinking, you can do just that. You can also get some fantastic deals on your first family vacation – you just have to shop around! Let’s take a look at some of the ways that you can be savvy with your money when you have a baby on the way.

Cloth Diaper. An initial investment is needed here, but there is plenty of information online about cloth diapering and how much you save financially over time compared to disposable diapers instead. It’s also far kinder to the environment, and compassion is a lesson babies can learn early!

Breastfeeding. There is enough of a witch hunt out there for both bottle and breastfeeders, so we’re not going into the ins and outs. If you want a free way to feed your baby, you want to, and you can, then breastfeeding is pretty much the best way to get out of the cost of formula, sterilising, bottles and prep machines!

Baby Wearing. Skip out on the whole travel system and embrace the fourth trimester with your baby attached to you. You can buy wraps at a cut down cost, and you can use videos like this one to learn to wear your baby so that you’re able to have your hands free and keep the money you would have spent on a pram.

Car Seats. Okay, this is one you should never be frugal on. Use voucher codes to save money if you can find any good ones, but a car seat is something that even the most frugal out there have to realise is a cost that is worth spending out on. A great car seat will save the life of your baby – no ifs, buts or maybes.

Babies are only as expensive as you want them to be. All they need is you, somewhere to sleep and something to eat. That’s all.
