10 Things I Hate About You

“Why are you so angry all of the time today?”

Scarlet asked me that yesterday, and it stopped me in my tracks. There’s nothing like questioning your crankiness after a sweet little voice questions it first. And to be honest, her voice is sweet and little, and was even a little hoarse yesterday, but she was throwing me a lot of attitude right back. THAT is why I was cranky. I hate the word “hate” but there are things I hate. I hate crowds, which sometimes translates to others that I hate people, which is absolutely not true. Although I do hate feeling trapped or overwhelmed or anxious. I hate that I think people can be so incredibly oblivious, but I hate even more the fact that it’s true for me too and that people don’t use their brains to their full capacity. Ohhh, I’m guilty of that.

The thing is, the range of things to hate is so vast. I hate the feeling of a hangnail, and how if you don’t clip it or have access to clippers, you can’t let it stay like that. So you pull it and it HURTS, and then continues to hurt for hours or days. It’s small, though. I hate racism, and that’s quite large. I hate my own inadequacies, of which there are plenty, but I hate more how trapped I feel sometimes – completely unable to rise above – and react, heal, combat, surrender, let go, and deal.

That’s what I hate.

Hate is a bad word in my house, along with “stupid” and “fat” which are the really bad “s” and “f” words. That doesn’t mean they’re not words, though, and that we don’t sometimes fling them with meaning. When Finish the Sentence Friday proposed this topic today: “10 things I hate more than anything”, they joked that maybe they made a mistake with the topic, and that we’d have to be cranky to participate. To be honest, I am cranky today. I’ve had two sick kids home with me for most of the week and I have SO much to wade through before two business trips within the next week. I don’t even feel that well but it’s allergies that are making me paranoid it’s more. I haven’t even been out in the world to hate anything.

You don’t have to be cranky to write this post. You do have to properly examine some tough stuff, though, and your reactions to them. I decided to break mine into categories, and to say things I hate about each one. Fun? Well. We’ll see:

1 – Foods. It’s so hard to pick a least favorite. I used to say raw onions, but I think there might be worse things. Like cilantro, truffle oil, stinky cheeses, octopus, and duck liver! That fake grape flavor in candy and kids’ medicine. YUCK.

2 – Destructive Human Behaviors. Where to begin? Lying. Violence. Stealing. Cheating. Bad habits. Bullying. Greed. HATE. Gosh, we really are a weird bunch, aren’t we? Luckily, we happen to exhibit such positive behaviors too.

3 – Driving patterns. People are greedy on the road, aren’t they? Sometimes people drive as if you can’t die while driving, and others are just annoying. I’d say driving slowly in the left lane for awhile is an oblivious or malicious behavior.

4 – Bodily fluids. I can’t think of any to be a walk in the park, but vomit is my most hated!

5 – Animals. I really don’t love scorpions, spiders and snakes, but I’d let them all live. I will carry a tiny ant to safety and I have almost zero violent tendencies to speak of, but as far as I’m concerned, mosquitoes and ticks can DIE.

6 – Unpleasant physical feelings. I’ve been lucky to experience this minimally, and only from reading in the car, but I think motion sickness feels SO MUCH worse than any virus or food related sickness I can imagine. And it LASTS so long.

7 – Weather. There’s a lot to hate out here. There are those endless thick-clouded days in March. We have dangerous ice storms, cold rain, steamy rain, or just plain gloominess. I think the endless thick-clouded nothing days are the worst.

8 – Other people’s habits. Audible eating and close talking are in the lead!

9 – Places. I’ve had some dark times in Delaware. And Rahway, NJ isn’t my idea of a peach. There’s that congested driving area near, but not in, NYC and it’s just my idea of the worst places to live. Pollution and houses right next to each other.

10 – World crises. Terrorism, poverty, hunger, and polar bears clinging to icebergs. Gun violence, polarizing political views, racism, homophobia, intolerance, fear, hate, and hurting animals. Hurting ANYONE. Religion wars. CANCER. Just stop.

My list of things to love? It’s nearly endless. I can’t count that high! It’s raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. It’s eyelashes on Des and love with anyone. Basically this was hard for me, because I’m mostly all about the LOVE!

Feeling cranky today? This is me linking up, as one of my favorite things to do, with Finish The Sentence Friday. This week’s topic is “10 things I hate more than anything.” And there’s still time to write yours. Come link up with your spin: HERE.

  1. When I first saw the title my initial thoughts were of the movie. You hit the nail on the head with some of these things, because I despise them with a passion. Especially audible eating. OMG!!! Can’t you not eat without me hearing it? It drives me CRAZY!!!

  2. Bodily fluids, there’s this guy at the gym who almost made my list. HE DRIPS onto the machine, into the pedals, the floor it’s so gross I have to divert my eyes. My biggest problem with him is that he just leaves the machine without wiping it down. I think I’d ask for a mop! I always wipe down my machine before and after but I always wonder if the pedals previously had a pool of sweat in it.

    P.S. I put a post-it-note over the bug/spider web until I got past it.

    Hope everyone’s feeling better today.

      1. My sister is going through nursing school right now and I just don’t have the stomach for it. Some of them are fine for me and others send all of the hairs on my arms standing on end!

  3. I’m game… I hate when I inhale whatever I’m drinking and cough for the next 20 minutes. I hate when illness ruins fun plans. I hate when I color my hair, and then my gray is showing 2 weeks later. I hate when I get a cramp in my toe. I hate when political commentators argue over each other trying to make their point, and I can’t hear either one of them.

  4. I hope both kids feel better soon! LOL to mosquitoes and ticks can DIE. Yes. Lice, too. You don’t like truffle oil? Interesting. I’m convinced some things really taste different to some of us than others. I remember you saying you’re a super taster, maybe that’s part of it? Speaking of eating – audible eating is SO GROSS. Ugh. Great list!

  5. Stopping by from Lana’s blog 🙂 Drivers…oh man they drive me crazy. I drive 100 mile round trip to and from work, and man…it’s crazy how important people think they are…thinking their time is worth more than the next with some of the stunt they pull…but I pretty much agree with all that write, minus ants, they can all die…at least the ones in my house. The ones outside, great, eat all the dead animals out there, but not the food my kids left on the floor, hehe. Happy Friday!

  6. I’m with those that don’t like the word hate. I may be angry, disappointed, sad, or numerous other emotions, but I really try to avoid hate. Outrage is even worse 🙂 Inrage – I don’t think is a word, but maybe it should be. 🙂

I’m like you about animals, by the way. Had a scorpion in the mailbox the other day. It was on a letter. A big one too. It feel on my shorts as I saw it. I flipped it on the floor of the car and haven’t seen it since. Maybe it has no hate for me 🙂

  7. Fake grape flavor associated with medicines and many of the other fake flavors associated with medicines didn’t taste so bad to me when I was young, and I was thankful that my children would swallow medications needed to get well.
We also discouraged the use of the word hate among our children.
I’ve never eaten duck liver. Does it taste like chicken livers, only bigger? I do like cilantro.

  8. Allergies are just horrible this year! I feel your pain there. Loud eating, not using napkins, licking fingers (I might just have to re-write my list, now) will send me over the edge!
Hope your kids are feeling better and your allergies settle down.

  9. can identify with #5 and #6 (and, of course, the place that you stand in relation to the world around… of course lol)
I regard most insects as possible examples of how maybe god was in a bad mood, or (worse) decided that purgatory ought to be a living experience for those that he decides merit the ‘less than total punishment’.
Spiders. Now thats a bug of a different color.
That said (lol) I don’t hate spiders. It wasn’t their fault that my subconscious picked them to serve as the safety valve of something horrible in the depths of my psyche. They have always been a phobic cue.
I have no trouble with aches, pains and not-good physical feelings and sensations…. provided I have what I consider a reasonable explanation.

  10. Definitely agree with you on many of those. I also hate LA traffic. I absolutely love my state but the traffic can be SO BAD at times. And did you know that I always think of you when I cook with cilantro? (It’s true!) I, like you, have a much longer list of things I love!

  11. This blog title will really get one’s attention, Tamara! Healthwise I have a number of things on my hate list that range from surgical scars to very strong side effects of many of the meds I’ve had to take over the years, and very slow progress with physical therapy. At the same time I’ve been trying to be much better at dealing with various difficulties and hardships that life can throw at you. It has helped me to develop a deeper appreciation of how to recognize people, places and things to love. I hope all of you are already feeling better by now!

  12. I agree with a LOT of these things!! I especially hate the word “stupid” it’s not allowed in this house AT ALL. It’s just as bad a real cuss word in my opinion!

  13. Yes, I agree with all of these things, Tamara. It’s hard to write what we hate b/c we’re trying to be positive humans. I do hate when people walking into Starbucks ahead of you let the door fall on you when you’re carrying bags. Holding the door for the person behind you is common cosideration. I hate when drivers cut me off then honk, as if I’m in the wrong. NO. I also loathe the fake grape flavor in kids medicines. Bla. I hate people who make a big deal out of everything and have to complain constantly about small grievances and look to blame everyone else for said problems. Ha. There I dug in.

  14. I love that move! 10 things I the about you, was my movie 🙂 My Mom hated the world hate also, she wouldn’t allow us to use it, we could only say dislike. I also plan on making hate a bad word in my house, there are things that I hate but I try not to use that world. I can’t imagine 2 sick kids I think you are allowed to be cranky.

  15. Everytime someone says “Shut up” in our house, my son says “Dance!”
(FOr the record, it’s something we say in imaginary conversations with, oh, ussually people in political office who shall remain nameless.)
Love the Hamilton Mix to kick off your list. 🙂

  16. I really don’t hate many things, but audible eating and limp handshakes, leaving the toilet nasty (especially in public restrooms), insincere people, racists, and people who renege on their word get my goat big time!

  17. Ugh scorpions. They must die. Sorry. Or the ants that invaded my kitchen last summer. I worked like a madwoman to end them. I am obviously a very cranky insect kind of person 🙂

  18. I like your take on this Tamara! I wasn’t feeling cranky last week so I didn’t post, but I should have approached it like you did. And any post that references Hamilton is a great post for me. <3

  19. Hi Tamara, I totally agree that hate is a bad (and too word), but on the other hand there are things we all hate. Lying and greed. The cr*p and bull**it (people spin). Crowds. Being touched unnessecarily, being breathed on and noisy eaters. Luckily they aren’t things that I come into contact with on a daily basis…. Aren’t seasonal allergies the worst. Hope you all feel on top of the world soon.
