What’s #1 In My Spring Cleaning Toolkit, and Why!

Spring cleaning is something we all have to do, so it's important to get the right gear for it! Here's what is number one in our spring cleaning toolkit, ESPECIALLY, in a house overrun with little feet and paws. #ad #TheLibmanCompany #EmbraceLifesMesses

I don’t know about you, but this here house is overrun with little feet and paws!

Even though our chickens don’t come into the house, they are also a part of our spring cleaning! After all, we raised them in the basement under heat lamps. It’s mud season in New England and some of us.. cough cough (DES).. don’t always remember to take our dirty boots off after coming inside! Today is both raining and snowing and it’s just one of those days in which you have to throw open the curtains and make the best of it. Every now and then I get a cleaning whim. Mind you, this is rare, but that’s why I need The Libman Company. They know their way around cleaning products, and I need that!

I need anything that makes spring cleaning easier, and since The Libman Company is a family-owned company, and 120-years-old (!!), their USA-made brooms, brushes, mops, and cleaning tools are pretty awesome. There are a lot of messes in my life. I have two pets and two kids who seem to do a lot of damage with their feet and paws around here. Without fail!

That’s why the best item in my spring cleaning toolkit is my Tornado Mop. This is America’s bestselling mop, which I actually didn’t know! I can see why, though, because my kids love it too. For real, I caught them both dancing with it.

If danceability isn’t a top-selling point, I don’t know what is! (sorry for the blur, but can’t resist:)

The Tornado’s larger mop head covers 50% more surface area. The three green bands prevent tangling. And, the polyester yarn resists odor-causing bacteria. The Tornado Mop is ideal for any surface, and I rather love that. We seem to have a lot of messes around here, and spring is probably when you notice it the most. It’s more light and fresher air and definitely more dirt! I never thought I’d prefer the days of snow melting onto the floors, but the dirt seems endless. Luckily, I have just what we need to make this house cleaner and fresher. Our Tornado Mop is easy to use, and highly effective.

What else could you need for spring?

7 Kitchen Items You Didn’t Know You Have to Clean

So, tell me – how’s your spring cleaning coming along?

Right now, we’re working on our Spring DEEP Cleaning. We’re doing it in waves and stages – kind of like how the weather has been – as it eases from winter into spring. On a day like today, with fresh air flowing throughout the house and with sunlight shining on the items of the house, it’s gorgeous and uplighting. HOWEVER, it also reveals the dust, dirt, grime, wear and tear of the previous season! For me, it’s the perfect day to put more thought and heart (yes, I’m for real!) into spring cleaning.

What does that mean for you? For me, it means cleaning the items we may not get around to on a normal basis – whether that’s daily, weekly, or monthly. This is about letting in fresh air and sunlight, and eliminating those deep-rooted sources of germs, dirt, grime, etc. When Cassidy and I do a thorough assessment of what needs to be cleaned in our kitchen, I used to get rather shocked! He’ll tell you how many times I said, “Wow.. I had NO idea I had to clean that.” Or, “Wow, that gets REALLY dirty.” The good thing is that I’m going to tell you about some kitchen/household items that get REALLY dirty.

The better news is that they can all be cleaned/fixed with Scotch-Brite™.

Yesterday, we had a special brunch with three of our kids’ six grandparents. After everyone had left, and the dishes had been soaped, rinsed, and put away, we used that opportunity to see what else needed to be cleaned or deep-cleaned for the week. Did you know just how many kitchen and other household items can be cleaned with sponges – and not only that – but should be cleaned with sponges? These useful and colorful kitchen staples are used for much more than dishes and counter tops.

See what they can do!

1 – The blender gasket. Boy, this one is important! And I had NO idea about it. I ignored it constantly while just cleaning the obvious inside of the glass part of the blender. Think about how many smoothies, purees, and other recipes your blender helps you with! Help it back with Scotch-Brite™. The gasket or the rubber ring alone can carry salmonella, E. coli, yeast, mold, and probably much more. So, unplug your blender, take the pieces apart, and clean them with a sponge and warm soapy water.

2 – Food storage containers. I have to admit that I always “think” I’m doing a great job with these, until they’re dried, and I can see that the rubber seals are still harboring germs when not washed properly. How do you do it better? Use warm/hot, soapy water and make sure you really clean the area around the seal – and any grooves where the cover attaches to the bottom part of the container. This is key! I can’t tell you how many times I thought it was thoroughly cleaned, but it wasn’t.

3 – Fridge compartments – especially the vegetable drawer – and with a bonus tip! Fridge compartments as a whole are prone to mold and decay. The germiest spots in the fridge are probably the vegetable drawers and/or meat compartments. Remove the drawers, rinse them, and wash them thoroughly with a clean sponge and mild dish soap. Dry with a clean towel or paper towel. Here’s your Scotch-Brite™ bonus tip: Line the bottom of your vegetable crisper with dry sponges, and replace them when they get wet. This will help keep your vegetables at their peak freshness! Pretty cool, right?

4 – Rubber spatulas. Is this another one you think you’ve got nailed down? I know I did! Apparently, they’re a top germy place in your kitchen and household because of improper cleaning! Wash them in warm, soapy water often. They get dusty!

5 – Knife blocks. Boy, do these get germy. And we have new ones we want to take great care with. You have probably been chopping, paring, slicing, and dicing foods all winter. You probably wash your knives with great care – but then re-contaminate them when you place them back in the knife block. Remove your knives, turn your knife block upside down to get rid of crumbs, and then wash the block by hand in warm, soapy water with a good sponge and a small brush for the slots.

6 – Can openers. In this house, I’ve been known to use a can opener and then put it straight back in its drawer! I’ve also used our electric one without washing after. Wash both (unplugged first) with warm, soapy water after each use.

7 – Reusable grocery bags. I know, right? I never considered this one! The canvas ones can be washed in the washing machine, but many can be wiped down with an all-purpose cleaner and a sponge. Then, let them air dry.

*Bonus places: Dishwasher doors, dish towels, tops of cabinets, kitchen faucets, and knobs and handles. These are all places surrounded by food and germs, and subject to a lot of human touching. And for one last sponge-related tip: you can protect sensitive surfaces from frames, vases, and other decor by gluing small squares of sponges to the bottoms of items. This helps prevent scratching! Brilliant, right?

So, tell me – was there a household item in this list that you didn’t know had to be cleaned?
