So, tell me – how’s your spring cleaning coming along?

Right now, we’re working on our Spring DEEP Cleaning. We’re doing it in waves and stages – kind of like how the weather has been – as it eases from winter into spring. On a day like today, with fresh air flowing throughout the house and with sunlight shining on the items of the house, it’s gorgeous and uplighting. HOWEVER, it also reveals the dust, dirt, grime, wear and tear of the previous season! For me, it’s the perfect day to put more thought and heart (yes, I’m for real!) into spring cleaning.

What does that mean for you? For me, it means cleaning the items we may not get around to on a normal basis – whether that’s daily, weekly, or monthly. This is about letting in fresh air and sunlight, and eliminating those deep-rooted sources of germs, dirt, grime, etc. When Cassidy and I do a thorough assessment of what needs to be cleaned in our kitchen, I used to get rather shocked! He’ll tell you how many times I said, “Wow.. I had NO idea I had to clean that.” Or, “Wow, that gets REALLY dirty.” The good thing is that I’m going to tell you about some kitchen/household items that get REALLY dirty.

The better news is that they can all be cleaned/fixed with Scotch-Brite™.

Yesterday, we had a special brunch with three of our kids’ six grandparents. After everyone had left, and the dishes had been soaped, rinsed, and put away, we used that opportunity to see what else needed to be cleaned or deep-cleaned for the week. Did you know just how many kitchen and other household items can be cleaned with sponges – and not only that – but should be cleaned with sponges? These useful and colorful kitchen staples are used for much more than dishes and counter tops.

See what they can do!

1 – The blender gasket. Boy, this one is important! And I had NO idea about it. I ignored it constantly while just cleaning the obvious inside of the glass part of the blender. Think about how many smoothies, purees, and other recipes your blender helps you with! Help it back with Scotch-Brite™. The gasket or the rubber ring alone can carry salmonella, E. coli, yeast, mold, and probably much more. So, unplug your blender, take the pieces apart, and clean them with a sponge and warm soapy water.

2 – Food storage containers. I have to admit that I always “think” I’m doing a great job with these, until they’re dried, and I can see that the rubber seals are still harboring germs when not washed properly. How do you do it better? Use warm/hot, soapy water and make sure you really clean the area around the seal – and any grooves where the cover attaches to the bottom part of the container. This is key! I can’t tell you how many times I thought it was thoroughly cleaned, but it wasn’t.

3 – Fridge compartments – especially the vegetable drawer – and with a bonus tip! Fridge compartments as a whole are prone to mold and decay. The germiest spots in the fridge are probably the vegetable drawers and/or meat compartments. Remove the drawers, rinse them, and wash them thoroughly with a clean sponge and mild dish soap. Dry with a clean towel or paper towel. Here’s your Scotch-Brite™ bonus tip: Line the bottom of your vegetable crisper with dry sponges, and replace them when they get wet. This will help keep your vegetables at their peak freshness! Pretty cool, right?

4 – Rubber spatulas. Is this another one you think you’ve got nailed down? I know I did! Apparently, they’re a top germy place in your kitchen and household because of improper cleaning! Wash them in warm, soapy water often. They get dusty!

5 – Knife blocks. Boy, do these get germy. And we have new ones we want to take great care with. You have probably been chopping, paring, slicing, and dicing foods all winter. You probably wash your knives with great care – but then re-contaminate them when you place them back in the knife block. Remove your knives, turn your knife block upside down to get rid of crumbs, and then wash the block by hand in warm, soapy water with a good sponge and a small brush for the slots.

6 – Can openers. In this house, I’ve been known to use a can opener and then put it straight back in its drawer! I’ve also used our electric one without washing after. Wash both (unplugged first) with warm, soapy water after each use.

7 – Reusable grocery bags. I know, right? I never considered this one! The canvas ones can be washed in the washing machine, but many can be wiped down with an all-purpose cleaner and a sponge. Then, let them air dry.

*Bonus places: Dishwasher doors, dish towels, tops of cabinets, kitchen faucets, and knobs and handles. These are all places surrounded by food and germs, and subject to a lot of human touching. And for one last sponge-related tip: you can protect sensitive surfaces from frames, vases, and other decor by gluing small squares of sponges to the bottoms of items. This helps prevent scratching! Brilliant, right?

So, tell me – was there a household item in this list that you didn’t know had to be cleaned?

Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Lysol®, Finish®, Woolite®, and Air Wick®. The opinions and text are all mine.

Is it #SpringCleaning time at your house too? Use these 5 tips, tricks and hacks to make your house clean without taking too much time! #EverydaySaves #ad

It’s officially spring(ish) in New England. Birds are definitely chirping and singing. Tulips and crocuses are shooting through the earth by the hour. We are using our pellet stove and oil heat less and less, and we’re taking some spring-worthy snoozes!

During this time of year, we want the best products to do the best job – while we let light and fresh air into our house, and work to get rid of the winter remnants. The problem? Spring has a whole new host of dust, allergens, dirt, mud, and bugs! With kids, a dog, a cat, and our baby chickens, it’s inevitable!

As you can imagine, the house gets quite messy with two kids, a light-colored cat, and a shedding dog. How do we keep things in order around here? It’s not always easy, but we’ve gained some wisdom over the years. Whether you’re handling spring cleaning, or everyday messes with a kid and pet-friendly house, Lysol, Air Wick, Woolite, and Finish will help you clean and revitalize your home, room by room. These products let us clean smart for a spring clean that saves time and effort all around the home. All purchased at Target, we really love Lysol – which kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria*.

Is it #SpringCleaning time at your house too? Use these 5 tips, tricks and hacks to make your house clean without taking too much time! #EverydaySaves #ad

Here are my five favorite time saving spring cleaning tips, tricks & hacks to make you sing!

1 – Add a lazy Susan to your fridge. Growing up, we also had one on our kitchen table. It made passing dinner around to seven people a lot easier. Well the same goes for the fridge. Being able to spin it gives you access to things in the back of the fridge that you otherwise might have spilled or forgotten.

2 – Boost your morale. It’s the same as the way I work – with music, open windows and light (if possible) and maybe even a bar of chocolate. Whatever floats your boat. I even watch TV on my iPhone while folding laundry. No shame!

3 – Time yourself to save time. Yes, it works. Not only will you be more ambitious while racing the clock, but you’ll also know just how long things actually take. Maybe it only takes ten minutes to clean the shower or toilet. Maybe!

4 – Clean your windows on a cloudy day! Sunlight will cause them to dry too quickly and then they leave streaks.

5- Succumb to the greatness of Lysol products! You can choose Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner for 10X Cleaning Power* (*vs Lysol Clean & fresh Toilet Bowl Cleaner), and it removes the toughest stains in seconds. Watch it destroy toilet rings and clean as it disinfects. Then there’s Lysol Kitchen Pro Antibacterial Cleaner – which kills 99.9% of harmful kitchen bacteria without the harsh chemical residue other cleaners leave. It has Dual Power cleaning functionality and a nozzle with spray and foam!

Right now, plan on every day saves to make spring cleaning fresh and easy! You can trust Lysol for ALL your cleaning needs – both in and out of the bowl. Lysol Wide Angle Disinfecting Spray can disinfect mattresses and other soft surfaces that are bacteria hotbeds. The spray can be used on couches, mattresses, curtains, and pet beds. It can cover a king size mattress in three seconds, and is available in two modern fragrances: Garden after the Rain and Lavender Fields scents. Lastly, Lysol Click Gel allows for hands-free toilet bowl cleaning. Simply insert an automatic cleaning gel to clean with every flush.
