I remember the first time I heard about IBS, because I had both a relative and a close friend with the chronic condition. I didn’t understand a lot about it, and I feared that maybe I had it or would have it someday since I tend to have a nervous stomach. I know now that my symptoms had nothing to do with IBS and were nauseous feelings related to anxiety. It took me a long time to see a doctor about my symptoms, so I can understand the reluctance that IBS sufferers have to discuss their bowel movements with their doctors. When they do, though, they can find relief and support – both a long time coming.

I know what it’s like to feel trapped by your body – unable to feel you can live a normal life.

Picture Your IBS

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic condition that affects nearly 35 MILLION people in the United States alone. Misinformation and self-treatment cycles are leading people to suffer with IBS for years, or even decades, before finally seeing a doctor. It can be a difficult and embarrassing topic for people to talk about, even to their own doctors.

People haven’t been talking about it enough. Until now.

Picture My IBS is a new initiative that offers people a new way to express their feelings about the impact of IBS on their lives. You can create an original piece of artwork in whichever form allows you to best express yourself and your IBS journey – whether it be a painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, or other type of artwork that meets the contest guidelines.

Picture My IBS was created by The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) in collaboration with Allergan and Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, and aims to help those with IBS find a more comfortable way to communicate with their doctors, to share their IBS journey with others and to show others that they are not alone. These pieces of art are being shared by real people living with IBS, and will help elevate public awareness and shine a light on the many ways IBS affects people’s lives.

More big news is that a panel of judges will evaluate the art submissions and the Grand Prize Winner will receive a trip for two to a luxury hotel and spa in NYC. Five Honorable Mention winners will receive a $100 American Express gift card.

Share your own IBS-inspired art work or encourage a loved one to do the same – as part of the Picture My IBS initiative. You or your loved one could win one of many exciting prizes. Visit Picture My IBS for more info.

I made my own art submission – to try to understand this struggle.

I love collages, and trying to channel many emotions and feelings at once. I have to admit – Scarlet helped a lot. Her eyes lit up at the chance to do an art project, even one that highlighted a syndrome. I think that made her more interested.

So, what do you think? Are you going to enter the contest?

When I say I’m a breakfast person, that may be a bit of an understatement. The correct term is breakfast enthusiast.

I have been known to have trouble sleeping the night before, because I can’t wait to eat breakfast the next morning. I have been known to make breakfast dates with friends who have initially asked for drinks dates, coffee dates, lunch dates or dinner dates. It’s just.. breakfast. This is my flow time. This is my happy time. It’s when I’m most creative.

This is when I’m most ravenous.

burritos

With the new year just underway, I’m more focused than ever on starting 2017 off on a healthy note. As per usual, my goals are on bettering myself physically, mentally and emotionally, and on staying healthy with the help of Sweet Earth Natural Foods products. Cassidy and I used to make burritos during the early parts of our marriage. We’d throw anything on that our hearts desired, and that expanded later when I was pregnant. Sometimes it was carrots. Sometimes it was peppers.

I learned how to eat quinoa by living in San Francisco. Now that we’re parents and we’re in the middle of the frigid and endless months of a New England winter, I need a little more substance in my breakfasts lately. I need a kick to start my day. I generally need lots of protein and even more flavor. During this past weekend’s taste test, I found something new.

burritos

Over the weekend, I went on a Functional Breakfast Burritos shopping spree – partly at Stop & Shop – and mostly at Whole Foods, I did not come up empty-handed. Not one to miss out on a single good thing, I got four flavors from Sweet Earth Natural Foods: Get Focused!, Protein Lover’s, Get Cultured!, and Lighten Up! What inspired their functional burritos? Form following function. The burritos are filled with vegetables, complex grains, omega-3, probiotics, fiber, and tons of protein.

I started my day with a Get Focused! today.

Sweet Earth Natural Foods make healthy foods, without compromising flavor. These easy-to-eat burritos are so much fun to discover, that Cassidy and Des happily helped me when I taste-tested all four flavors.

Get Cultured! – This one intrigued Cassidy the most. It’s a probiotic, vegan, Korean-inspired breakfast burrito, filled with – tofu, cabbage, carrots, spinach, fermented red pepper, edamame, and ginger. There are 12 grams of protein and 8 grams of fiber. Intriguing, right? It was a little spicy, but not too much for me. I love the edamame! I think I have an obsession with fermented foods. I also love tofu. Would I buy it? Yes. Cassidy’s reaction was simple, but perfect: “I like it!”

Get Focused! This one was my most anticipated one, because I’m totally an eggs and cheese girl. This burrito also has rosemary, flaxseed, kale, peas, smoked gouda, and meatless Tuscan Grounds. There are 18 grams of protein, 7 grams of fiber, and omega-3! It’s a favorite. I LOVE the eggs. This is totally my thing. There’s a slight fennel taste too.

Lighten Up – Lighten Up has only 190 calories, 10 grams of protein, and 7 grams of fiber. It has seasoned tofu, homemade salsa verde, spinach, black eyed peas, brown rice, and red bell peppers. The smell of the homemade salsa verde and the red bell peppers is instant! Des liked this one best. So if you are keeping score, Cassidy liked Get Cultured Best!, I liked Get Focused! best, and Des liked Lighten Up best. It has a nice traditional favor, and I bet it’s a favorite to many people. I LOVE the black eyed peas! I’m not a cilantro person, and it’s in there, but it doesn’t overwhelm at all. Also available in a 3-pack!

Protein Lover’s – This functional breakfast burrito contains Sweet Earth Natural Food’s Vegan Benevolent Bacon.

The smoky smell and taste is instant! This burrito is protein-packed with scrambled egg whites, quinoa, kale, garlic, meatless Tuscan Grounds, the Benevolent Bacon, and cheddar cheese. It has a whopping 20 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber, and is high in vitamins B1, B2, and C. I loved the quinoa – such a great texture! Also, this one is available in 3-packs.

Talk about healthy, convenient, and flavorful foods for your New Year’s Resolutions! I found my burritos at my local co-op, at Stop & Shop in the organic frozen section, and at Whole Foods. Find your local Sweet Earth Foods with THIS LINK.
