For as long as I could remember, I’ve wanted a daughter to dress up with.

I think many of us have those thoughts before we have kids. We imagine what kind of kids we might have. And sometimes we’re close, but often we can’t even begin to wrap our heads around these complex beings. I knew I’d have a daughter who would love to read, but I pictured someone more shy and maybe more eccentric. Scarlet is a people’s person, though. She can get along with everyone, and she is bubbly and kind. She’s athletic and good at math, but of course, can spend hours reading. That’s one of our activities together actually, but SPOILER. When she was born, she looked a lot like I had as a kid, but now she has her own unique look, and her own flair. We butt heads like crazy, but also meet perfectly in the middle.

And I LOVE that we can dress alike. I’m not even sure if I should say “already” or “still” because I hope it lasts. I think that one day we’ll be borrowing each other’s clothes. I was lucky to have two sisters and we all three wore the same size. One of us was curvier, one was more athletic, and I was more willowy, but somehow we all wore the same size, and could share with our mom too. Scarlet got a jean jacket just last month that I coveted. I was so happy when my friend, Rachel, found me the adult version of the jean jacket. I mean – could it get more adorable than this? Jean jacket twins for life, I hope!

I’ll never forget that it all started with a red peacoat, and now it’s leggings, jean jackets, dresses, and more!

It’s not just dressing alike that I love, but it’s mostly about the fact that she’s proud to do so. Last week we had an occasion to dress alike, and she spent a lot of time putting together our outfits. Hers wasn’t clean so she made sure that we’d have enough time to wash and fold her outfit. I was charmed, I will admit. I love that she loves spending time with me, because of course the feeling is powerfully mutual. And here’s our comprehensive list of 5 mother-daughter activities for spring!

1 – Train together. Last fall, Scarlet was in a 5K and we had the option to join her. Cassidy wound up doing it, because I had anxiety about it and didn’t want to disappoint her. Now I realize I couldn’t possibly disappoint her if I at least tried. She trains twice a week for her upcoming spring 5K and I’m training too, because I don’t want her to leave me in the dust then!

2 – Volunteer together. Now that it’s spring, it’s time to tackle a community service project together! Pick one activity that will help you two give back to others, while also spending that impactful and meaningful time together.

3 – Find passions together. We love to read together, and make little dreams come to life. Whether that’s hiking, a family-friendly class or activity, or important events locally, find something to flourish with together. The sky is the limit.

4 – Road trip together. That’s sort of our thing. We love to explore new places and stay in hotels too! She loves a good room service picnic. Des often comes with us, but we started our scenic road trips just the two of us. Our first trip was Vermont:

5 – Shop together. In fact, you can shop as a whole family at DSW. That’s my favorite store! Be still my heart. I fell in love with it in New Jersey, and then had an incredible location to visit downtown in San Francisco. Now that I live in western MA, I was so pleased to find that we have a big location only a few miles from home. So good! Reebok Classics for the fam!

You can get a pair of Reebok Classics for the whole family today! I love the benefits of one stop shopping for the whole family at DSW. I never imagined I’d be going to my favorite store years later as a mama, but here I am, totally thrilled!

We don’t always match, but when we do, I can’t believe how much we have in common! We both like colorful leggings, red dresses, cool headbands, and comfortable, pretty shoes. I love knowing we’ll be running together in the same shoes!

And I love knowing that we’ll be doing a lot of fun activities in the same shoes! Scarlet always attracts smiles wherever she goes, because she radiates happiness, kindness, and a whole lot of color with her eclectic way of dressing/being.

What are you up to today? How about getting a pair of Reebok Classics for the whole family?

When She Marched

This is me linking up, as one of my favorite things to do, with Finish The Sentence Friday. This week's topic is Photo Share Friday And there's still time to write yours. This was from our little city's Pride Parade in May.

As usual, there is no way I’ll keep this “Photo Share Friday” to just one photo!

For that matter, it won’t be one story either. I’m not sure I’m capable of that, since my career is pretty much that of a glorified storyteller. Oh, do I love stories. Even when I think they’re not that interesting, I prove myself wrong each time.

Pretty much every story has a hot core of infinite other stories.

Most of you probably know this about where I live, but it’s a bit of a happy bubble.

It’s very live and let live, unless you cut in line at the winter farmer’s market and get the last of the kale! (slight joke) I’m not here to say that any way to live is right or wrong, but I’m telling you like it is. Northampton and its surrounding areas have a high number of unique lifestyles. I could say gay, bi, trans, etc. but it’s much more than that. It’s like I said – live and let live. Be and let be. Rock out and let others rock out. In other words, “Who cares if it isn’t hurting you?” Unless someone cuts you off from their little hybrid car, that runs on corn oil. Then just give them a friendly wave, or a one finger salute.

I’m not here to judge either way.

Thing is, my kids don’t know any other way to live – other than letting other people live (kale and corn oil cars, aside) – and I don’t really want to tell them the truth quite yet. That there are a bunch of people in this world who aren’t comfortable with who they are, and they try to change it for the rest of us. This here is our land of rich greenery and rich Pride.

And don’t take that away from us. Or I really will give you more than a one finger salute. I’ll pelt you with kale.

This was not our most recent Pride Parade and Rally. This was in 2016, but hey, that’s where my Photo Share Fridays have been taking place, so why change it now? It rained in May of 2016 for three weeks straight. I couldn’t bear it. I had all kinds of fantasies about pelting Mother Nature with kale and corn oil. And I wanted to leave. I’m really glad I didn’t, though.

There’s just so much to see and be otherwise.

Like a Giant Eye! Or a furry. Or a furry driving a school bus. Or undefined, and still awesome.

And honestly it’s the longest parade ever. It goes on for a full hour and this isn’t a huge place!

We’ve been bringing both kids since they were babies. I would have come earlier, had I known about the parade! We only missed one year because I was photographing a senior beauty pageant in Connecticut, but generally we always go, and the sun ALWAYS comes out. It’s always a gorgeous day. Even last year the second the parade started, the rain clouds ducked away and revealed a sparkling sun over all of the rainbows and the fanfare. If that isn’t magic, I don’t know what is!
