Fellow parents, the back-to-school season is NO JOKE, right?

I am quite bad at adapting naturally to the transition. Summer is for sleeping in, as much as Des lets us, anyway. It’s for spontaneous road trips, trailside ice cream, and juicy berry picking. It’s too bad there’s not an easier way to go from that to the days of 9:00am soccer practice, Back to School nights, colds and other viruses, and regular homework time. With one in 3rd grade and one in kindergarten, I can’t relax into autopilot quite yet. Scarlet is really good at making her own lunches and managing her own schedules, but Des is only a few weeks into elementary school. He still needs a lot of hand holding.

And I’m happy to give him that.

That said, even when you look at life outside of the crazy back-to-school season, things aren’t settled for me either. Having both of them in school for six hours is a wonderful time for catching up and business-building, but right now I’m working in a makeshift basement office, while the renovations are being done upstairs. I’m sleeping on a full-sized guest futon, instead of my wonderful and comfy king-sized bed. Did I mention I’m starting a third job? I’m caught in the whirlwind of fall insanity!

How can we better ourselves during these hectic times? What I know for sure is that it’s worth more than a try – it’s about a commitment to taking time to relax and take care of yourself as much as you can. Here are our favorite seven ways:

1 – Discover Nature’s Truth® Aromatherapy products. This was a happy discovery for me at Rite-Aid in the vitamins aisle. There’s a whole aromatherapy section there and it’s wonderful to discover the effective products.

What do I love? We have many favorite products, but I particularly use the same four for my daily relaxation routines. I use Eucalyptus 15ml Essential Oil. It’s 100% pure plant based, paraben free, and gluten free. I also love Good Nite™ Essential Oil, which has the same amazing properties as the Eucalyptus Essential Oil. I also love my Lavender Mist Spray and my Peppermint Mist Spray. They are topical mists. The thing is, the scents of these oils and mists are soothing at the end of the day, and also at rest points throughout the day! Use them alongside mindful meditation.

Also, use them during rest time, or before bedtime to help unwind after a long day.

I honestly feel calmer just writing these words! And now onto my next six tips:

2 – Get everything ready the night before. I’m talking outfits for the kids, outfits for you, snacks and lunches, work stuff, and even the most minute details – like jewelry! It will make every morning feel easier, and will promote a more relaxing environment.

3 – Connect and reconnect with your spouse. The heart of the family really starts there and when you’re not in sync, it sort of bleeds into everything else you try to do – solo, together, and with the whole family. Find your way to each other more.

4 – Take a warm/hot bath at night and with a good book. This is multi-tasking, but it’s multi-tasking that promotes relaxation. It’s relaxing to do, and even knowing it’s happening at the end of a long day will help you feel relaxed all day.

5 – Do something super nice for yourself, or book an appointment to do so. Pedicures, manicures, facials, galore!

6 – Rest and nutrition. You know how you emphasize good eating and sleep habits for your kids? Do that for YOU too.

7 – Have a busy to do list? Schedule your own down time. I’ll bet you’ll put a check mark on that one every day.

  4. I have all these essential oils, and I forget to actually use them. Your renovations sound exciting—but not the part about not getting to sleep on your cozy king size bed. The back to school routine is work in itself. We all need all the relaxing we can get, for sure.

  7. Dude, I can’t believe you are taking on another job with all you have going on. You are insane! Hope you are able to relax with these essential oils as much as possible 🙂 I also need to pick up some. I haven’t tried any yet, and always want to rub on feets before sleeps!

  8. Starting a 3rd job? You need all the relaxation you can get for sure. I generally use most of these tips. I’m not big on essential oils though unlike most people, but I will have to start getting some for myself.

  11. So many great tips on your list and I never thought to add it to the bath. I love the smell of peppermint and it’s also a natural spider repellent…spray it near them and they run for the hills.
